15 of the Most Famous Golf Courses around the World

Well known course designer, Pete Dye, once said, “Golf is not a fair game, so why build a course fair?” This has sort of become a signature, a trademark attribute of every good golf course out there – the challenge, the notorious holes, the twists and turns. Win or lose, some of these golf courses are punishing enough to make professional golfers cry on global television. Some of sport’s most unforgettable moments (of joy or of defeat). Which explains why some of the toughest golf courses are the most famous ones. Here at Golf Escapes, our team has over 60 years of collective experience in travel and over 40 years of collective experience in golf travel, so we know a thing or two about golf courses by now, including the best ones, the hardest ones, the most scenic ones, and the most iconic ones. Here are 15 of the most famous golf courses from around the world!

1. St. Andrews Old Course, Fife (Scotland)

Scotland’s courses make the big lists every single year and few have beaten the fame or the popularity of St. Andrews. The club boasts seven courses in total but it’s the Old Course that really has people talking. This par 72 course spans 6721 yards and anyone who plays here will be following in the footsteps of legends. St. Andrews Old Course is one of the oldest and most acclaimed courses in the world, and the Swilcan Bridge and Hell Bunker are recognised as seriously tough obstacles by golfers worldwide. Despite its status though, this course remains open to the public so it’s as accessible as it is prestigious.

And in addition to its shining reputation, the course is also incredibly well managed – in a sustainable and responsible way – to ensure that every golfer has the best possible experience.

2. The King’s Course, Perthshire (Scotland)

Often referred to as “the best moorland course in the world”, King’s Course remains a favourite amongst amateur and professional golfers. The course itself is designed by renowned architect, James Baird, and is best known for blending all 18 holes seamlessly into the landscape for a scenic and utterly soul-soothing experience. An absolute visual masterpiece, with the rugged natural beauty of rural Perthshire serving as its backdrop, the King’s Course is a test to even some of the best players in the world. A unique challenge with unbelievable views of the surrounding moorlands.

3. The Stadium Course at Sawgrass, Florida (USA)

The Stadium Course at Sawgrass in Florida is a regular contender for the Top 100 lists in well-known golf publications and the notoriously tricky 17th island green is one of the reasons that makes this course such a famous one. Designed by Pete Dye, this is one of the most recognised courses across the globe. And with 44 average balls in the water according to 2013 stats, it makes for a riveting watch during the annual Players Championships. The 17th is the course’s shortest hole and one of the most dramatic. It can easily go one way or the other. Plenty of pro players manage to score a birdie here, but you can cut the tension with a knife between player and audience every time, because no matter how seemingly achievable it is, golfers are always just one swing away from a double bogey.

4. Oakmont, Pennsylvania (USA)

This par 4 course opened back in 1903 and was built by the father-son team of Henry and William Fownes, two highly regarded designers who set the standards of golf and took it to a whole new level. Henry and William said of the game, “A shot poorly played should be irrevocably lost.” And that has been the concept behind their challenging course architecture. One slight mistake, one minor error and all chances could be blown. Created to be the most punishing and difficult course in America, Oakmont makes you work for it at the Church Pews bunker and also on the left side of the 4th hole.

5. Augusta National Golf Club, Georgia (USA)

If the spectacular scenery doesn’t blow you away, the history and the long list of world famous players sure will. The course was founded by Bobby Jones and Clifford Roberts, was designed by Jones and Alister MacKenzie, and has been the home grounds for the Masters Tournament ever since 1934. This is the only major tournament played at the same course every single year, making Augusta National Golf Club one of the most famous across the globe. It goes without saying that it ranks as one of – if not, the – best course in numerous publications and tournament experiences are always a fantastic and memorable experience for visitors. Our packages include hotel and breakfast with Masters tickets and transfers (with custom holiday packages also available).

Set along the stunning coastline of Pebble Beach in California, this 18 hole golf course offers the most awe-inspiring views. The natural beauty of the surrounding area is unmatched by any other golf course in the US, and the course boasts a timeless feel for classic playing. The course was designed by Alister Mackenzie, with a view of allowing the golf course to take a natural and organic route, blending the holes flawlessly with the beauty of the landscape. Watch out for the 16th hole and beware of The Pacific – the ultimate water hazard.

8. Pine Valley, New Jersey (USA)

Another impressive course that regularly makes the Top 100 and even Top 10 lists of the best golf courses in the world. And it isn’t without reason. Founder George Crump, who sadly died before the course’s completion in 1919, took a piece of desolate land in New Jersey and set about transforming it into a beautiful masterpiece. After public opening in 1919, it took more than three years before anyone could complete the course in 70 strokes and Pine Valley quickly earned its reputation as one of the most testing courses for even the best golfers. In the book Complete Golfer, Robert Trent Jones wrote about Pine Valley, “It fills you with dread and delight…..it takes your breath away…..it’s a monster…..but it’s beautiful”.

9. Royal County Down Golf Club, Newcastle (Northern Ireland)

It’s no surprise that an Irish golf course has made it onto our list. With the incredible rugged landscapes and unforgiving coastal winds, golfing in Ireland or Northern Ireland is both a challenging and beautiful experience. The Republic of Ireland is fast becoming a key destination for golf holidays but we simply can’t go without mentioning a Northern Ireland course, the famous Royal County Down Golf Club and regular contender in Top 100 lists. It’s often compared to Royal Portrush, with the two clubs going head to head to be the best golf course in the Norther Ireland region. Nestled at the foothills of the Mourne Mountains and still upholding many of golfing’s old traditions, this is a great place to play.

The Best Golf Courses in Europe That Won’t Break the Bank

If you work your way around all the destinations in Europe, there are so many golf courses out there that mean you can have a great Golf Escape without spending a small fortune. Every region has their signature course that all the group flock to play, but they usually come at a cost. Here is our advice on how to play great golf courses, but keeping it within a healthy budget too.el-chaparral

El Chaparral – A really fun course. The design is very different to others in the area and is a really interesting course to have in your itinerary. We always recommend to play it in the middle of your holiday as it is very tight and a tough one to start off with. The added bonus with El Chaparral is that shared buggies are included in the greenfee as well, just to make it even better value for money! After your round, stay for a drink as the staff are incredibly friendly and gives the superb clubhouse a great atmosphere. A real gem of the Costa del Sol.castro-marim

Castro Marim – In the East of the Algarve lays some great golf courses and with the town of Tavira in the middle of them all, it is a fantastic place to take your next holiday. Out of the local courses, Castro Marim is easily the best value for money. Three loops of 9 holes, the Grouse, Guadiana and Atlantico make up the resort and all three are great. The Grouse is the newest and perhaps the best if you wanted to take in the views of the rolling hills. The Guadiana is the tightest, set amongst pines trees. Several of the greens are elevated and are usually the fastest of the 9 holes. Beware of the bunkers! Finally the Atlantico. Plenty of water and similar to the Guadiana in that it is lined with pine trees. Definitely worth playing when staying in the East of the Algarve and an area in general that must be considered for your next Golf Escape.

el-valle

El Valle – Murcia is a golfer’s paradise with so many golf courses all in such close proximity to the sea front and to Murcia Airport and all brilliant value. You can play 6 different courses without travelling any further than 30 minutes from your base in Los Alcazeras. El Valle is the Golf Escape pick though. A vast open space littered with bunkers makes it a course that you have to think your way around. Tight fairways also add to the difficulty of the course. When you think you have mastered the fairways and bunkers you are then faced with huge expanses of water on the 13th, 14th, 17th and 18th. Tough, but a very pleasant walk taking in views of the hills surrounding you.

troia

Troia – A treat to play if you are staying anywhere in the Lisbon area and fancy a good day out. The course is situated in the Troia Peninsula and means getting a short ferry journey from Setubal. When you get there though, you will see why it is worth the journey. The course is stunning. If it was anywhere else in the world it would be a £150 round of golf easily. This is where location, location, location works in the guests favour. You can play this course for great value for money as long as you don’t mind the journey. Playing alongside a peaceful beach, it has a links feel to it at times with sandy wasteland for the 2nd cut of rough. A challenge, but a real favourite in the Golf Escapes office.

The hotel boasts a lovely outdoor pool as well as extensive spa facilities that you can enjoy at your leisure whilst staying here. The PGA Catalunya courses are just a five-minutes’ walk away and it is no surprise that these are two of the most popular courses in Europe – staying here means that you get to see why! This hotel is a beautifully decorated one and all of the rooms are decorated with warm colours and feature elegant bathrooms. This is a beautiful hotel where you can enjoy stunning surroundings, great golf and high-class facilities.

costa-navarino

Last, but not least, is Costa Navarino which is a beautiful five-star hotel located in Greece. This resort is popular with both golfers and non-golfers due to its extensive facilities, superb golf and other activities on offer as well as its stunning surroundings. The hotel is just five-minutes’ walk from the golden, sandy beach but there are also stunning outdoor pool areas for you to relax around as well as the beach. You will never be short of somewhere relaxing to eat or drink with there being so many different restaurants and bars in great locations around the hotel for you to enjoy. If golf is less your thing then there is the Anazoe Spa which features an indoor spa as well as a long treatment menu for you to pick from! Golfers can indulge at the on-site Dunes course which has a links feel to it but you find your way navigating around Greek countryside which gives a great setting to the course. It is no surprise that Costa Navarino made it onto our list for the best hotels for a golf holiday with added sophistication!

The 18th is certainly something to look forward to on this course as you will require accuracy in your shot to get to the well-protected green at the end. This course is a scenic one with wide fairways meandering through forests of pine and eucalyptus trees and is certainly one not to be missed. Voyage guests get prime tee times and discounted green fees at this course and if that doesn’t seal the deal for you then nothing will!

titanic

Titanic Golf Club is another beautiful course that you can play when staying at the Voyage and has 27 great holes for you to play. This course has a real mixture of holes from beachside ones to parkland to links style holes! This is a lovely course to play and can be a real test of ability!

tivoli-marina-portimao

Another great resort for your group golfing holiday is the Tivoli Marina Portimão which is situated on the Algarve. This stunning 4-star hotel is situated in the centre of the marina in Portimão just three-minutes’ walk from the beach and five-minutes’ from Praia de Rocha. There are three fantastic courses within close proximity to the hotel – Alamos, Morgado and Salgados – so you will never be short of somewhere to have a good round of golf! Each of the studio apartments that you can stay in feature a kitchenette so it is possible to do a little self-catering if you don’t want to venture out for dinner or to one of the hotel’s two restaurants. If there are some of the group less into golf, then they can enjoy being in such a central location or just use the hotel’s swimming pools and fitness rooms whilst the others are golfing!

real-bellavista

Also situated on the Algarve is the Real Bellavista Hotel & Spa which is another resort to consider when you are thinking about your next group golfing holiday. This resort boasts an ideal location as it is so close to the centre of Albufeira which is well known for its busy nightlife and wide range of restaurants and bars. The hotel’s rooms are all spacious and fully-fitted with everything you would expect from a hotel of this standard and there is also a spa and health club for those of the group who may not want to go on all the golfing excursions! With all of this and the fact that there are several golf courses within close proximity of the hotel this definitely is a resort we recommend for the perfect group golf break.

melis-villaitana

Hotel Melia Villaitana is a 4-star hotel situated just 20 minutes from Alicante and just between two fabulous golf courses. The hotel offers a wonderful spa area, outdoor swimming pools and an artificial beach all for guests to enjoy at their leisure. The hotel is designed to replicate an old Mediterranean village and all of the rooms have private balconies or terraces as well as a satellite TV. There are a range of restaurants for you to enjoy at the hotel but Alicante is a short drive away where you can find more restaurants, bars and nightlife to enjoy! The Villaitana courses are simply stunning and will provide great rounds for guests at the hotel. This is another fantastic option for your next group golf holiday to Spain and although you can venture out to get the nightlife and bars the actual hotel is a little quieter and more exclusive than other busier resorts.

mar-menor

Mar Menor Golf Resort boasts some beautiful and well-appointed apartments which are perfect for when you are travelling as a group here. They are all spacious with well-equipped kitchens and either a private balcony or terrace for you to relax out on. The Residences give you that option of self-catering which can be great for when you are travelling as a group rather than eating out all the time but there are plenty of options for food and drink nearby as well! This is a great destination for your next golf break as there are a wide range of different courses within such close proximity of the hotel as well as the well-known Mar Menor course on-site!
