Santo da Serra, Madeira, Portugal

Santo da Serra

Robert Trent Jones updated the original 18 holes and added 9 of his own in 1998.

All 27 holes career over mountain slopes and ravines, and although the phrase is over-used, this really is one of the world's most spectacular courses. The annual PGA Tour's Madeira Open has been played at Santo da Serra for more than 10 years, and the comments of the pros bear testament to this wonderful course. The course rises 1500 feet up into the mountains and there are two bits of advice when you play here - take a buggy, and take layers of clothing as the temperature can vary 10 degrees at different parts of the course. The course is mostly forgiving and can be enjoyed by all golfers (just enjoy the views and the experience if you're not playing well!). Wonderfully maintained and under half an hour from Funchal, you could spend a week playing here and still not get bored. A must play when you're planning your Madeira golf holiday.
