Spotlight on the JJW Collection

This week’s blog is a guide to the JJW collection. This collection of hotels: Dona Filipa and San Lorenzo Golf Resort, Penina Hotel and Golf Resort and the Formosa Park are three fantastic properties which offer luxurious accommodation, brilliant facilities and most importantly, excellent golf. They are also all situated on the beautiful Algarve where you can experience lovely temperatures through from April to October-November time for golf which makes one of these properties the ideal place for your next golf escape…

First up, just two minutes’ walk from Vale do Lobo Beach is the five-star Dona Filipa and San Lorenzo Golf Resort. This is arguably one of the finest hotels in the Algarve and it isn’t hard to see why. Whilst you are staying here, you can enjoy spacious rooms which boast all of the modern amenities that you could need including a flat-screen TV and a minibar whilst the rooms still retain old-world charm. You can spend your days relaxing by the large outdoor pool from which you can enjoy panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean, or you can venture just 200 yards to Vale do Lobo Beach. If you are looking for the ultimate relaxation experience, take a trip to the Estetica Spa where you can enjoy a massage or the other spa facilities. The hotel’s main restaurant, the Primavera Restaurant, serves delicious buffets which boast both regional delicacies and international dishes and after dinner, you can enjoy a cocktail and other beverages at the San Lorenzo Bar. Of course, the hotel and all of its facilities, including its brilliant location, is very important but one of the best things about staying here is that you can pre-book tee times for the Algarve’s premium course – San Lorenzo.

In the past, San Lorenzo golf course has been ranked as the second best course in the whole of Europe which means that is a must-play for any keen golfer when visiting the Algarve. This world-class golf course is set alongside the Atlantic upon sandy and undulating terrain. The course’s fairways are lined with umbrella pine trees and the course borders on to the marshland bird sanctuary of the Ria Formosa. The first five holes wind through a pine tree forest before the course opens up at the par 3 5th hole where the backdrop is the coastline, after this hole you venture past the Ria Formosa before finishing at the opposite side of the Ria Formosa which actually comes into play for the final two holes. The 18th hole is a brilliant risk-reward hole and is a difficult long par 4 where you have to avoid the water which runs up the left side of the hole before trying to land your shot on the island green – a spectacular finish to an incredible round of golf indeed. If the hotel isn’t luxurious enough then the chance to play at this gem of a course should be enough reason to book your next golf break to Dona Filipa and San Lorenzo Golf Resort tomorrow.

Another brilliant five-star resort is the Penina Hotel and Golf Resort which is a beautiful and elegant hotel with an outstanding reputation among many golfers and non-golfers alike. The hotel is set within lush gardens and boasts a wide range of sports and leisure facilities including three golf courses and a huge outdoor swimming pool to relax around during the day. The hotel boasts an excellent location, just five minutes’ drive from Alvor Beach and Continente Shopping Centre. All of the rooms at Penina are light and airy and many have private balconies and seating areas which overlook the pool area. Whilst you are not out on one of the golf courses or relaxing by the pool, you can take a trip to the spa where you can have a massage from a wide range of treatments, enjoy the sauna or workout in the fully-fitted fitness centre. Whilst you are here, you will never be short of somewhere excellent to eat or drink as there are five restaurants onsite, each of which has a different speciality whether it be traditional Portuguese dishes or Italian or other international cuisines. Besides all of the excellent facilities and restaurants, the most important thing about a golf escape is the golf and the golf here will not disappoint you as you can enjoy the Penina Championship and the Penina Resort courses.

Penina Championship course is just a couple of minutes’ walk from the hotel’s front door and although the course is fairly flat and walkable, it is a stern test of golf with many trees, water hazards and strategically placed bunkers. It is impossible to pick out just one brilliant hole from the Penina Championship course as so many of them are memorable and present different challenges from the brilliant risk-reward 5th hole where you must either take a risk but play accurately to avoid the large lake and out of bounds and reach the green in two shots or take the longer but safer route. Then, there is the 12th which is a long par 4 where the small green sits directly behind a lake. The Penina Resort course is only 9 holes but you play the course twice to make it to 18 holes. The Resort course is tricky with many lakes and bunkers but it is an enjoyable one where your skills will be tested (but not as much as they are on the Championship course) in beautiful surroundings. So many people return to Penina Hotel and Golf Resort year after year after year and once you take a trip here you will be sure to understand why…

Last, but certainly not least, is the Formosa Park which is situated between the Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo resorts within a protected nature reserve on the coast and is just five minutes’ walk from one of the Algarve’s finest beaches: Ancao Beach. Whilst you are not relaxing on the beach, you can enjoy the hotel’s lovely outdoor pool area which can also be overlooked whilst you are out enjoying a delicious breakfast on the terrace. All of the accommodations boast private balconies and fully-equipped kitchens which means that you have no reason to venture out of the hotel even if you don’t want to overspend on your next golf break. However, there are a good selection of restaurants within five minutes’ driving radius of the hotel. Not only can you get the chance to play the world-class San Lorenzo course here but you can also play Pinheiros Altos which is situated in the Quinta do Lago estate and has wide fairways which are heavily lined with trees and are undulating which can make this course a little tricky. The course’s name translates to “tall pine trees” and you can see how this course was so aptly named but its beautiful surroundings can distract you from the fact that this is a challenging course to even golfers with the lowest of handicaps. After your round, you can enjoy a drink and even a meal in the luxurious clubhouse. The Formosa Park Hotel is an ideal destination for any type of golfing holiday whether it be with a family or a group or if you are just looking for a quiet romantic getaway.

We hope that you have enjoyed this week’s blog and that when you are thinking about the destination for your next golf break, you consider the JJW Collection of hotels and all that they have to offer in terms of service, luxury and golfing opportunities…

Cyprus Special

This week’s blog is on the joys of Cyprus and some of the best hotels and golf clubs that Cyprus has to offer you for your next golf break. Cyprus boasts brilliant long summers right through from mid-May to mid-October and even at other times of the year, the weather is still mild and mostly dry which makes it an ideal destination for your next golf escape. With beautiful beaches, luxurious hotels and fantastic golf courses you need to look no further than Cyprus when thinking about planning your next golf holiday…

The five-star Aphrodite Hills Hotel is situated right in the heart of the Aphrodite Hills Resort in Paphos. The hotel is a perfect example of how classic and contemporary styles can be combined in order to create a luxury hotel within stunning surroundings that boasts excellent facilities and accommodation. Each of the 290 opulent guest rooms each feature their own private terrace or balcony where you will either be able to see out across the Aphrodite Hills course, over the hotel’s gardens or out to sea. The rooms are all fitted with everything that you would expect from a hotel of this standard including a spacious luxury bathroom, bathrobes and slippers, a mini bar and a satellite TV. Dining at the resort is excellent, there is a wide range of different restaurants and bars where you can find everything from evening fine dining to local casual daytime dining. Some of the most popular places include the Greek Cypriot tavern Pithari Tavern where you can eat out on the terrace that overlooks the Mediterranean Sea or the Gate to Indian Restaurant where you can enjoy innovative Indian cuisine within an elegant setting.

You can spend your time here relaxing by the large outdoor pool and if you prefer somewhere quieter you can even make use of either the indoor pool or the adult-only swimming pool. There is also a 24-hour gym and the Aphrodite Hills Tennis Academy as well as two brilliant golf courses to play on: Aphrodite Hills, PGA National Cyprus and Minthis Hills.

The five-star Thanos Almyra Hotel is set amongst beautifully landscaped tropical grounds just five minutes’ walk from Paphos Harbour. There are no fewer than four freshwater pools for you to swim in or relax around and if that isn’t enough relaxation for you then you can enjoy time in the fully-fitted spa where you can choose from a range of holistic treatments and massages as well as the sauna and the gym. Each of the rooms are spacious and either have floor-to-ceiling windows, balconies or terraces from which you can look out to the stunning views of the garden or the Mediterranean Sea. They also have a satellite TV, a minibar and a safe. There is plenty of choice when it comes to food and drink at the hotel as there are four different restaurants which serve different cuisines ranging from traditional Cypriot dishes to international dishes. As well as the hotel’s fantastic restaurants, you are within short walking distance of Paphos Harbour where you can find many different restaurants and bars as well as the Medieval Castle of Paphos which is the perfect place to explore. This is a beautiful hotel and one where you can spend your time relaxing, playing golf or exploring the local area…

Thanos Annabelle Hotel is another five-star luxury hotel which is set amongst tropical gardens which boast palm trees, flowers and the seafront. Once you have stepped out of the hotel, you are only eight minutes’ walk from the golden beach but right at the hotel you can enjoy relaxing around the large outdoor pool with its swim-in caves. Whilst you are not by the pool or on one of the great golf courses nearby, you can take a walk through the landscaped gardens to admire the waterfalls or even use the spa at Thanos Almyra Hotel. All of the hotel’s rooms are elegantly designed with marble features and fitted with the amenities that you would expect from a hotel of this standard including bathrobes and slippers as well as a minibar, a satellite TV and free Wi-Fi. The Annabelle’s on-site Mediterranean Restaurant serves delicious traditional Cypriot and Greek dishes as well as international dishes. Of course, as you are so close to Paphos Harbour whilst staying here, you can venture out for food and drink if you would prefer. Whilst you are out of the hotel, you can take a trip to the local shops or take advantage of the watersports and other activities that are available in the local area. This is the perfect destination for your next golf escape and it isn’t hard to see why…

Thanos Almyra Hotel and Thanos Annabelle Hotel are both beautifully designed and boast of all the facilities and qualities of five-star hotels but the best thing about staying in either of these lovely hotels is the fact that within a short distance of both hotels lie three brilliant golf courses: Elea Golf Club, Secret Valley and Minthis Hills.

Minthis Hills Golf Club is just 25 minutes’ drive outside of Paphos Town and sits 550 metres above sea level which means that from the course you can see stunning views across the surroundings which include the grounds of a 12th century monastery. This is a very scenic course as not only are there stunning views to see but the fairways are lined with fruit trees and grapevines. Although the course is not the longest at 5843 metres long, it is a tricky one which requires accuracy if you are to avoid the various hazards including water, trees and bunkers and not only are there hazards on the course, but due to the position of the course, there is a constant sea breeze which can sway your game off track! The signature hole of the game is arguably the 13th hole which is a difficult par 3 where the green is situated on an island which is surrounded by water. This is a seemingly straightforward course but one that must be approached strategically – a brilliant addition to your golf break to Cyprus.

We hope that you have enjoyed this week’s blog and that you can appreciate all the brilliant hotels and golf courses that you could enjoy if you book your next golf escape to Cyprus

Situated in Sotogrande, Spain, are the Albayt Nueva Alcaidesa apartments which are all located in a superb location just next to the two golf courses: Heath and Links as well as just five-minutes away from the sandy beaches of the Costa del Sol. The Heath course is designed as a heathland style course with wide fairways and spectacular views of the Mediterranean Sea and local mountain ranges. Although this is a great holiday course, there are plenty of water hazards waiting to catch errant shots and when the wind picks up this course can be tricky! The Links course here is considered to be one of the best links courses in the whole of Spain, this course’s level of difficulty is also determined by the wind speeds on the day of play which makes the unlimited golf package here handy for when you want to get the chance to play again to improve your score (and ego)! This is another fantastic option for your next golf break where you can make full use of the unlimited golf package.

We hope that you enjoyed this week’s blog and you are looking forward to booking your next golf holiday where you can enjoy unlimited rounds on golf at superb courses whilst staying in some amazing resorts…

Insider’s Guide to La Manga Club

This week’s blog focuses on the famous La Manga Club resort, and also takes the opportunity to look at the 5-star Principe Felipe Hotel and the 4-star Las Lomas Village packages that are very popular with Golf Escapes clients. La Manga Club is an ideal resort for groups, offering a host of leisure, sports social and dining options to fill your day and night coupled with some superb packages available for all year round! Our packages include offers such as the “one free in eight” deal, plus Early Booking Discounts and other value adds so for value for money this is an excellent option.

If you want some quality during your stay then Hotel Principe Felipe is a modern and comfortable five-star hotel built in traditional Andalucian style with a wide range of facilities and of course direct access to the three brilliant golf courses on-site. The hotel is situated in the centre of La Manga Club which makes it the perfect destination for anyone who wants to be able to access all the facilities of this vast resort very easily. This includes the 28 court tennis centre, impressive spa facilities but especially the many bars and resturants. You will never be short of somewhere to enjoy a brilliant meal or a few drinks when staying here as there are restaurants serving all different types of cuisine from Mediterranean food to Asian cuisine, or Italian and Indian foods options. At the hotel, all of the guestrooms feature a TV as well as a private balcony which boasts scenic views of the pool or the golf course.Principe-Felipe

If your budget doesn’t quite stretch to the 5-star option but you still want all that La Manga Club has to offer than we suggest you take a look at Las Lomas Village. Packages here offer full acess to the golf and other facilities but are easier on the pocket and represent great value. Overlooking the North course, here you can also enjoy time relaxing by the pools, at the Club’s private cove or at the spa when you are not enjoying a round on one of the three golf courses here. Within driving distance, there are the beautiful unspolit beaches of Calbanque or the delights of the Mar Menor where there are is also a wide range of watersports available.Las-Lomas-Village

However, despite all this, for golfers the main attraction will always be the three 18-hole courses on-site and we start with the championship South course. This course is a stern test of golf, but the fairways are quite forgiving so don’t be afraid to open the shoulders. Although the fairways are wide, there are only a few holes which don’t feature some form of water hazard and there are many strategically placed bunkers ready and waiting to catch any errant shots! The course features a wide variety of different holes varying in length and difficulty from terrific par fives to short par threes and the 14th hole presents one of the largest sand traps in Spain with almost the entire length of the fairway on the right-hand side being bunkered.  The 18th is considered to be the signature hole where the tee shot is tough and with your initial shot you will find it difficult to avoid the many water and sand hazards and then to add to the challenge the green is well protected with bunkers. This course is a beautifully honest test of golf and the course demands some accurate shots in order for you to score near to your handicap, especially when the warm wind is against you! The greens are fast but this is a very fun and relaxed course – a perfect addition to your golf escape.South-Course

Next, we have the North course. This course was refurbished again recently and is very different to its sister South course, with the two meeting on several occasions during the 18 holes, it is much shorter and hillier. In order to score well on this course you cannot afford to lose concentration throughout the round as between holes 13 and 17 there are half a dozen ponds waiting to catch any errant shots late in the round. Out of the three courses at La Manga Club, the North course is possibly the easiest but that doesn’t mean that it is to be taken lightly, when the sun is shining (which is almost always is) the originally short par 3s seem long and the palm trees are there, lining the fairways, waiting to catch any wayward shot sent off course by the wind. Although this is a perfect course to play whilst you are on holiday or have a slightly higher handicap, there are also many challenging holes along the way such as the par three 4th hole with out-of-bounds to the left and a magnetic hazard on the right! This is a well-kept, scenic holiday course with large greens, lush fairways and lovely surroundings – definitely one not to be missed out on! Both the South and the North courses here at La Manga can be access straight from Principe Felipe Hotel being just a few steps away from the entrance to the hotel which means that no travelling or fuss is necessary to find a great golf course when you are staying here!North-Course

Last, but certainly not least, is the West course. This course is a 4-minute free shuttle away from the Principe Felipe Hotel and Las Lomas Village which means it is still easier than most to access! This course, although known as some as the Wild West due to the location in the hills, is beautiful with well-manicured fairways and spectacular scenery for you to enjoy throughout the round. Each of the holes here seems to be different and each one presents you with a different challenge whether you are a seasoned golfer or one with a higher handicap! The first nine holes are easier, and slightly less inviting than the back nine but they could not be described as easy with the 3rd hole presenting you with a challenging tee shot as well as a hidden green. Then you have the 9th hole challenging you to take on an uphill tee shot before you wind down to the protected green behind a ravine and in front of a large lake! Throughout the back nine holes you are up and down the mountains playing the difficult 12th hole and then the even more challenging par three 13th which although is a beautiful hole, will not look so beautiful on your scorecard! No one could question the signature hole after you have played the 18th, the tee is at the top of a small mountain overlooking the fairway and beyond across La Manga, the countryside and the sea – this is a superb finishing hole and you can only understand why once you have taken it on. This course is a fabulous addition to the two other La Manga Club courses and completes this as perhaps the perfect destination.West-Course

Travelling to La Manga is also very easy, Murcia (MJV) airport is just 20 minutes’ drive away and is a small airport which means that there are no long queues or walks and despite the fact that it is a small airport, plenty of airlines from the UK fly into there so La Manga Club is very accessible! There is also the option of Alicante (ALC) airport, just over an hour away, this airport is one of the busiest in Spain with a large number of UK flights landing daily. Footer

We hope that you enjoyed this blog and will be considering taking your next golf break to La Manga Club as it really does offer everything that you could possibly need or want, and is much more than just a golf resort. With recent investment, this resort is just getting better and better and so contact us to find out more and see for yourselves what the fuss is about.

Our Guide to the Best Tours of the UK

This week’s blog is an insight into the new UK golf tour packages that are currently being put together to give you the opportunity to stay in a fabulous hotel and  to play several golf courses nearby to get the most out of your golf break. With January finally over it is time to start planning for when the weather will get that bit better and you will get to go back to playing rounds of superb golf in the UK.  There is no better way to embrace the springtime weather and the courses that the UK has to offer you than by booking a tour…

Our Bournemouth tour offers you two nights at the stunning four-star Hallmark West Cliff which boasts an ideal location being just 10 minutes from the town centre and eight minutes from the beautiful beach. Whilst here, besides enjoying the fantastic golf that is on offer, you can enjoy the extensive leisure facilities from the heated pool and gym to the spa facility. Although use of the spa facility requires a small additional charge it is definitely worth it to get the full enjoyment and relaxation out of your golf break. Being such a short journey into the town centre you have unlimited dining and drinking options but the brasserie restaurant at the hotel is a fantastic option if your round on the golf course has taken it out of you! This is a lovely hotel and is no surprise that it is the base for the Bournemouth tour with its fantastic facilities and even better golfing options nearby…

Hallmark-West-Cliff

The Dudsbury Golf Club’s Championship course has been the venue for several prestigious golfing events such as the BMW PGA Order of Merit Championship and the PGA Europro Tour and if you want to see why this was the course picked then there is no better opportunity than this! The course is set in a beautiful location, amongst 160 acres of Dorset countryside which just makes the round here more enjoyable. There is no doubt that the 16th hole is a feature hole where you will have to show yourself to be a good driver in order to reach the green across two lakes! For after your round, the clubhouse is a fantastic place to sit and relax whilst enjoying more views of the Stour Valley and of course, a cold drink!

Dudsbury

The second course for this Bournemouth tour is the Championship course at Meyrick Park which is a demanding test of golf set amongst stunning Dorset countryside. It is an undulating parkland course with many challenges even for a golfer with the lowest handicap. The opening hole is a spectacular one where your driver is over a valley to the small green which is cut out of the hill. This is a great, challenging course which always seems to be in perfect condition and it is a fantastic addition to the Bournemouth tour.

Meyrick

Our second tour is the Kent Golf Coast tour where you are based at The Lodge at Princes Golf Club. The Lodge is the former clubhouse of Princes Golf Club and has been extensively renovated to provide guests with luxury accommodation and breathtaking views of the two great golf courses as well as across the Sandwich bay. The Brasserie restaurant is situated on the bay and provides a great dining experience for guests here with the use of local Kentish produce as well as an outdoor terrace to enjoy a cocktail or beer on after your meal! The Lodge is just over a 10-minutes’ drive into the medieval town of Sandwich where you can find great pubs, independent shops, art galleries and some historic churches. This is a fantastic and unique place to get the opportunity to stay and with the two golf courses so nearby it is not hard to see why this is a sure winner for your next golf break to the UK…

The-Lodge-at-Princes

Princes Golf Club is a modern championship links course set on the Kentish coast. This is a 27-hole course comprising of three loops of nine holes: Himalayas, Dunes and Shore. This course has some of the best facilities with excellent practice facilities, attentive staff and a beautiful clubhouse for you to enjoy your post-round drink in! This is a long and challenging course at over 7200 yards but there are a few different tee positions from which those with higher handicaps can tee off from, making it less of a challenge and more of a holiday course!

Princes

The Royal St George’s Golf Club is considered to be one of the finest links courses in England and has been selected to be the venue for The Open Championship no less than 14 times. This course requires accuracy and concentration if you are to score even close to your handicap due to the many blind shots that you will be required to take and bunkers that you have to avoid! This is a fantastic course and although can be a challenge for golfers of all abilities, it has some very interesting holes and scenery – the 4th on the Himalayas loop will definitely not disappoint! To round off the Kent Coast tour this course is perfect.

Royal-St-Georges

Our Top 6 Guide to the Best Facilities in Europe

This week’s blog is a guide to the six golf courses that have the best facilities in Europe. Whether you are planning your next golf escape based on a few superb golf courses you want to play or you want to know where to get to experience the best facilities in Europe this is a guide to help you out in both of those areas…

First up, we have the PGA Catalunya resort which boasts two superb courses – the Stadium and the Tour course. The Stadium course is considered to be one of the best courses in Europe and it isn’t hard to see why. It is a long and hilly course with some very challenging holes but with five different sets of tees it is playable by golfers of all handicaps. The Tour course is slightly easier than the Stadium course but is still a challenge for golfers of all levels with strategically placed bunkers and water hazards. There are many practice facilities here from the large natural grace practice tee to a 2,000 square-metre putting green and chipping area to the upgraded driving range with four greens, each surfaced with different grass! The resort also boasts a stunning clubhouse which has the perfect atmosphere for relaxing and enjoying a cold beverage after a fabulous round of golf on one of the courses.

The Belas golf course in Lisbon is a beautiful and hilly course that offers you fabulous views of the Sintra hills as well as the nature reserve. This course is definitely one to hire a buggy for otherwise your golf as well as your legs may suffer! The Golf Academy here is one of the most well-known in the Lisbon region and has impressive training areas including two short game areas and two putting greens. The course also boasts its own lovely clubhouse where you can relax and enjoy views out onto the course whilst sipping on a cold drink or enjoying a good meal. This is a beautiful, well-kept course with some first-class facilities and is not one to be missed out on!

Belas

Next up we have the Sueno courses in Belek, Turkey. The resort boasts two great courses, the Pines and the Dunes course which are great holiday courses to play and are always kept in perfect condition. The Dunes course is the shorter and easier of the two courses but still has some spectacular views and an interesting layout for players of all abilities to enjoy! The Pines course is a long and challenging course at 6,434 metres from the back tees with some strategically positioned bunkers and water hazards along the way! Both of the courses here will provide you with a great round of golf and a drink in the Birdie Bar afterwards is definitely not to be passed up on!

Sueno

Lumine Golf Club features two fabulous golf courses, the Lakes and the Hills courses. These are both very different courses but offer the same high quality round of golf and facilities that come with the round. The Lakes course offers some simply breathtaking views of the Sèquia Major wetland area but is a challenge with water hazards appearing on 14 holes which means that accuracy is key if you hope to score near to your handicap on this course! The Hills course boasts stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea as well as a tricky round of golf! Just like its sister course, there are many strategically placed hazards but on the Hills course they are bunkers rather than lakes, these hazards combined with the length of the course make this a challenging but fun round. At the golf club, there is a putting green, a chipping green and a driving range for you to make use of before your round if you are feeling a little rusty and not ready to take on these challenging courses!

Lumine

The Albatross Golf Resort, just outside the city of Prague is another fabulous course with great facilities. The course is set 420 metres above sea level which means that it has its own micro-climate and boasts the longest golf season in Europe. It is a truly stunning course with water hazards and sand bunkers just adding to the beautiful design of the course. At the resort, there are some of the highest class facilities available with a world-class golf academy as well as an updated driving range and an extensive short game practise area. The resort also boasts a superb clubhouse where you can enjoy a cold drink or a delicious meal after a round on this impressively designed course. This is another top-class course and a round here is certainly not to be missed out on.

Albatross

Last, but not least is the Amendoeira Golf Resort which boasts two stunning courses, the Oceanico O’Connor and the Oceanico Faldo. The Oceanico O’Connor course is heavily dominated by water hazards which makes it a tricky round where you will have to play accurately in order to achieve a scorecard that reflects your handicap which is similar to the Oceanico Faldo course as there are many holes that require you to think about your shots carefully before teeing off! There are also some great practise facilities here and the clubhouse is very luxurious with spacious changing rooms and lounge areas as well as a great restaurant and bar area for you to enjoy after your round!
