Where did you go for your first golf holiday?
My first experience of golf was on a family holiday to Spain, my Dad was a keen golfer and we played a couple of rounds on what was then a brand new golf course called Capoamor on the Costa Blanca, my score was 110 but I’d been bitten by the golfing bug and never looked back……
What was you most recent golf holiday?
I spent a couple of nights at the fantastic Valle del Este Golf Resort on the Costa de Almeria in May, I hadn’t been to Valle del Este for a number of years and was hugely impressed with the hotel and the quality of the golf course, it’s a tough golf course but the golf packages are exceptional value for money.
Valle del Este, Costa de Almeria
What’s your favourite golf course?
I’ve been lucky enough to play so many great courses over the years it’s very hard to pick one that stands out as the best. In Europe it would be hard to look past the fabulous Monte Rei course on The Algarve. Further afield the courses in Scottsdale, Arizona would rank very highly especially the Raptor & Talon courses at Grayhawk and I can’t possibly forget the amazing 18 holes I played on the Montagu course at Fancourt in South Africa.
GrayHawk Golf Club – Talon Course
What would be your ideal 4-ball?
A tough question……….I’d have to include Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods, probably the two greatest golfers to have played the game………and the 4th would have to be my Dad.
What’s your most memorable round of golf?
It would have to be Open qualifying at Sundridge Park when I was 19, I shot 2 under to come third and secured my place in Final Qualifying……….sadly that’s where the journey ended after two rounds of 79!
What’s your favourite golf destination?
For a longhaul trip I can’t think of a better golf destination than Scottsdale, Arizona, there are over 300 golf courses within an hour of Scottsdale. Add the fabulous bars and restaurants of Old Town Scottsdale into the mix and you have the perfect golf holiday. For a short haul trip The Algarve simply ticks all the boxes, great golf courses, great weather (usually), easy to get to and great value if you look further afield than Vilamoura. Both Tavira & Lagos offer much better value and are often overlooked.
Lagos, The Algarve
What’s the best hotel you’ve ever seen?
I’ve lost count of the number of hotels I’ve visted but two that stick in the mind are Finca Cortesin on the Costa del Sol and The Conrad Algarve in Quinta do Lago.
The Conrad Algarve
What’s your favourite city? Girona in the Costa Brava – trust me you’ll love it!
Where would you travel to to try somewhere different?
The Costa Brava would have to feature highly on this list, golf courses such as PGA Catalunya, Emporda, Golf de Pals are as good as anything you’ll find anywhere else in Europe and can be played for a fraction of the price of some of the other premium courses in Europe.
PGA Catalunya – Stadium Course
What’s you top travel tip?
Don’t forget your golf clubs!
This week’s blog is the second instalment to our guide to Mauritius. Mauritius is an up and coming country for golfers with its beautiful white sandy beaches, beautiful resort and superb golf courses. Part one focused on the great hotels and courses you can find on the East Coast here and this will inform you of the gems that you can find on the South Coast.
First up we have the Heritage Awali which is a stunning five-star beach resort surrounded by tropical gardens, swimming pools and the beach. The rooms all feature ethnic décor and a flat-screen TV as well as a private terrace or patio to enjoy the surroundings and warm weather. This hotel, like many others in Mauritius are all-inclusive and feature several restaurants and bars where you can experience everything from traditional Mauritian dishes to other international cuisines. If you are less into golf and more into relaxation then you will not be disappointed with the Seven Colours Spa where you can enjoy a wide range of different treatments. Besides relaxing by the many pool areas or on the beach there are also a range of different activities available including windsurfing and water-skiing. This is a stunning resort and is definitely one to take a look at when you are planning your next golf break to Mauritius.
Just two minutes’ walk from the beach and set amongst tropical gardens with a beautiful 18-hole golf course on-site is the five-star Heritage Le Telfair Golf & Spa Resort. This hotel is a member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World and it isn’t hard to see why. There is so much to do here from tennis courts, to the fitness and wellness centre to the watersports. The rooms here are beautifully decorated with an elegant theme each with a flat-screen TV and the facilities you would expect from a hotel of this standard. The hotel boasts two superb restaurants where you can either enjoy Mediterranean barbecues by the swimming pool or Pan-Asian cuisine down on the beach at Gin’ja restaurant. Not only can you experience the ambience of a small, elegant hotel when staying here but you can have access to the restaurants at the neighbouring Heritage Awali. This is another beautiful Heritage hotel on the South Coast and is perfect for your next relaxing golf holiday to Mauritius.
Both of the Heritage hotels have access to the stunning Heritage Golf Course & Club which is a superb 18-hole championship golf course which boasts spectacular surroundings of rolling mountains on one side of the fairways and a lagoon on the other. This course is known for its wide fairways and sizeable putting surfaces but many of which require you to reach them with a blind shot! This is a great holiday course as with five different tee positions it is a challenge for experienced golfers but can be enjoyed by casual golfers too! The course is always in immaculate condition and has a wide variety of holes which are both testing and have beautiful views from them – a great course all-round.
Last, but not least is Paradis Beachcomber Golf Resort & Spa which is a lovely five-star resort surrounded by palm trees and white sandy beaches located on Mauritius’ Morne Peninsula. The rooms here are decorated with natural tones and all have free Wi-Fi and a flat-screen TV as well as spectacular views of the Indian Ocean from private balconies off of the rooms. This hotel offers a bed and breakfast option which means that you get to experience the delicious breakfast buffet at the Le Brabant restaurant and then choose which of the other three restaurants you want to dine in each evening. La Palma serves Italian dishes, Blue Marlin is a delicious seafood restaurant and La Ravanne serves traditional Creole specialities. The hotel offers guests so many areas to enjoy from the large pool area, the beach is just a stone’s throw-away and there are watersports available there including windsurfing, snorkelling and diving. This is a brilliant, lively hotel with all the facilities and activities available that you would expect from a five-star resort and you will definitely not be disappointed with a holiday here!
Paradis Golf Club is a great 18-hole course on-site of the Paradis Beachcomber Golf Resort & Spa. The course boasts a spectacular location nestled between the stunning Morne Mountains and the shores of the Indian Ocean. The front nine holes are rather narrow and the back nine feature water hazards on almost every hole making it a challenge even for the most confident of golfers. The views along the back nine holes are simply breathtaking as the course sweeps out and back along the coast before turning back towards the clubhouse. This gem of a course will give you a testing but consistent round of golf with some views that you could only experience on the exotic island of Mauritius.
We hope that you have enjoyed both of the blogs on Mauritius and the gems that await you there both in terms of luxury resorts and superb golf courses. With January dragging on it is hard to even think about when we will get to experience some warm, sunny weather here in the UK and one sure way to take your mind off the January blues is to book your next golf escape to Mauritius…

If you still haven’t booked this year’s golf break to a place in the sun then this blog is perfect for you. The Costa de la Luz, Huelva, is considered to be Spain’s very own version of Portugal’s stunning Algarve region and is not one that should be missed out on. With some spectacular golfing hotels and beautiful courses your insider’s guide to Huelva should just be the last thing you need to encourage you to book a fabulous golf holiday to this region.
The region of Huelva is full of unspoilt natural beauty, interesting historical sites, wonderful golden beaches, great hotels and even better golf courses. The region is equidistance between both Faro airport and Seville airport making it easily accessible and we all know that less time travelling means more time holidaying! Huelva is an up and coming region in terms of the golfing opportunities with the already established Islantilla resort as well as Isla Canela and the new championship course at El Rompido. With more and more plans for new golfing opportunities here every year it is a perfect destination for your next golf holiday to sunny Spain.
Islantilla Golf Resort is a stunning four-star resort and offers everything there is to want when you’re looking for that perfect golfing break to Spain. With a great pool area as well as a fantastic beach club which features a pool, as well as opportunities for water sports, just a mile away from the resort there is no shortage of places to relax and enjoy the endless sun at the Islantilla resort. This lovely hotel is spacious and bright with all rooms featuring a lovely balcony or terrace on which they can enjoy the views of the gardens surrounding the hotel and, of course, the sunshine until late! The hotel also boasts a magnificent spa which features a lovely indoor and outdoor pool area as well as having a variety of different treatments on offer to help further your relaxation here. The hotel features four lovely restaurants serving a range of different cuisine for guests but if you would prefer, the commercial square with other restaurants, bars and a few shops is just a short walk away from the resort. This resort truly is a great one and should definitely be top of the list of considerations when planning your next golf holiday to the sunny region of Huelva.
The Islantilla golf course opened in 1992 and has now become one of the most well-known and sought after course in Andalusia. Although the course is now 14 years old, playing it you would have no idea as the greens are in as immaculate conditions as ever and no-one could call this course tired or boring. This 27-hole parkland course has hosted a range of prestigious tournaments since its opening including the Spanish Masters in 1995. With three sets of nine holes, golfers can choose which loop to play meaning that they will always get from this course what they want to and there are several combinations to play! The Yellow course is considered to be the easiest nine holes here at Islantilla with the Blue/Green courses usually chosen to play by golfers looking for more of a challenge rather than a practice. The Blue nine holes are thought to be the toughest of the three sets with the first few holes rising and falling over hilly terrain before slightly levelling out to enjoy a great par-4 for the 4th hole with a large tree obscuring the putting surface making it a hole where accuracy is definitely key. With a variety of different holes from hilly with blind shots to undulating greens and hanging lies to the long but not especially difficult holes – Islantilla offers them all and is a great round from start to finish.
Something a little different in the Huelva region is the five-star luxury hotel El Rompido which is more than worthy of its five-star rating. The hotel is located virtually on top of the two fantastic 18-hole championship courses on the resort – El Rompido North and El Rompido South. The hotel features bright and nicely decorated rooms, most of which have stunning sea views or great views of the golf course and gardens surrounding this spectacular hotel. With great golf on offer, a lovely spa area, a traditional restaurant and bar and the city of Huelva just 10 miles away this is perfect for your next golf escape to Huelva. El Rompido South is a course broken into two sets of nine-holes. The first nine are tight holes where you need to be as accurate as you can in order to score well before the course opens up on the back nine with stunning views of the coast and plenty of open space and scenery to enjoy on this great round. The El Rompido North course can look as if it is not as stern of a challenge as it is due to its relative flatness across all of the holes. However, water comes in to play frequently and the fairways are bordered with pines waiting to catch errant shots. Both of these courses are picturesque and challenging – a perfect combination.
Another great place to stay and enjoy in Huelva is the Isla Canela Golf Hotel. This four-star hotel is modern and luxurious and is just a five minutes’ drive from Isla Canela as well as only a mile or so from the beach. With a traditional style restaurant, a Tapas bar and a café there is always somewhere to relax and eat at this hotel. The hotel also features a beautiful outdoor pool area as well as a fantastic golf course on site. The Isla Canela Golf course is a great course for golfers with a higher handicap as it is a more straightforward course but of course can be enjoyed by golfers of all abilities. There are some beautiful views of the beach and the forests which are intermingled with some fantastic dog-leg holes and stunning greens. This course has little undulation so is perfect if you’re looking for a lovely course that you can walk and take in the scenery whilst playing an enjoyable round of golf. This is another perfect destination for your next golf break to Huelva.
We hope that this blog inspired your next golf holiday to Huelva (perhaps in 2016?) and that you realise the gems on offer in this beautiful region of Southern Spain.
What is more, if the above wasn’t enough to get you reaching for the suncream and polo shirt then here at Golf Escapes we have another great incentive for anybody booking an escape to a hotel or resort in the Huelva region.
