This week’s blog is a guide to nine tricky golf courses for those who like a challenge. It is fair to say that golfers often do not tend to go after the easy option; they would much rather seize the opportunity to show off to their fellow players. Here, we have hand-picked some of the most challenging golf courses in Europe. All nine of these fantastic golf courses offer a stern test of golf that can be best appreciated by players that like to be kept on their toes, and those that ultimately search for an invigorating challenge.

The Espiche Golf Lagos is a hidden gem in the Algarve, one of the most popular golfing destinations in Europe. Players must navigate around the 18 holes here, through a unique layout with a challenge characterised by the strategic placement of greenery and fauna. While the fairways may appear to be on the generous side, with dense forestry lining the edges and subtle contouring, golfers are guaranteed an unforgettable test of golf. This par 72 golf course has been designed to incorporate most of the landscape’s natural features, which in turn creates a stunning landscape, and of course a fantastic challenge. Not only must golfers anticipate masses of greenery and fauna to manoeuvre their shots around; the layout is also rife with bunkers and water features that run their natural course throughout the course. Despite the Espiche Golf Lagos being a relatively new golf course in the Western Algarve, it has already established itself as one of the most challenging and unique golf courses in the area. With this layout, players will find they will succeed more in course management if they prioritise accuracy over the length of their shots. There are some truly tricky tight spots throughout, therefore the general line of advice for those that want to attempt the Espiche Golf Lagos is to take plenty of spare balls! Golfers must anticipate the challenge at the par-4 3rd hole as it is widely considered to be the most difficult on the course with a 409-metre-long uphill fairway. Whilst the fairway here appears to be generously wide, the subtle undulations are sure to trip up even the most experienced player.

The Dolce Campo Real Lisboa golf course is situated just half an hour’s drive away from the centre of Lisbon. Here, golfers can enjoy an invigorating round of golf across a unique terrain with rolling hills and valleys. The challenge does not end here; not only is the landscape truly unique with consistent elevation changes, but there are also dense areas of greenery and forestry throughout. Golfers must play with the perfect balance of accuracy and length in order to manoeuvre their shot across the many water hazards and some tricky doglegs which demand a blind shot. Even the most skilled players will find every element of their game challenged at the Dolce CampoReal Lisboa as they must overcome the natural terrain of the original landscape. Donald Steel, one of the most famous golf architects in the world, has created a fantastic golf course built on the natural beauty of the former terrain. The golf course that stands today is rife with the original landscape’s features, including the natural greenery and fauna weaving in and out of the stunning valleys and hills. Players are wrong for assuming they have an advantage with an anticipated view from the elevated tees; the greens are subtly undulating, creating a surprising challenge.

The Shire is widely considered to be among some of the best golf courses in the UK, as well as one of the most challenging. Designed by the leading golf architect Seve Ballesteros, the Shire golf course is guaranteed to keep golfers on their toes throughout their game. Players can enjoy a fantastically varied round of golf; at this golf course, no hole is even remotely similar. The golf course comprises of six par threes, six par fours and six par fives, all of which offer a unique layout and a stern test of golf. Long hitters will feel right at home here as their skills will be utilised best with the challenge to overcome the many large water hazards. They can reap the benefits of the risk-reward system at this golf course, and those that cannot rise to the challenge will be penalised. The challenge here does not just end at the strategic placement of the water hazards and the sheer size of them; there are over 10,000 trees at this parkland golf course just waiting to swallow any wayward shots. Furthermore, the greens are unbeatably fast and feature subtle contours to trip up even the most skilled golfer.

The Salobre New, formerly known as the Salobre North, is a distinctive golf course that is guaranteed to set the hearts racing of all players, regardless of their skill set or experience. This golf course offers a unique round of golf to its players with an original landscape that is sure to be remembered for years to come. Despite the fact that this par 69 golf course is not nearly as long as its sister golf course, the Salobre Old, nor the other golf courses in the surrounding area, that is not to say that golfers will find a round of golf here a walk in the park. The Salobre New was designed with the emphasis on the use of accuracy instead of length, meaning golfers must be sure to play with their A-game throughout their round. Despite only opening in 2008 as a new addition to the huge variety of golf in Gran Canaria, the Salobre New has already created a steady reputation for itself as one of the most challenging golf courses on the island. A highlight of the stern test of golf on offer at the Salobre New includes the par-4 10th hole where players must utilise the use of their iron in order to cross an undulating fairway to reach the multi-tiered green.

One of the most unique golf courses in the Algarve includes the Monte Rei, which has accurately been labelled as “the jewel in the crown of Portuguese golf”. Conveniently for players, the Monte Rei is home to a peaceful and tranquil atmosphere to soothe any tempers raised from the challenging layout they have to overcome. Designed by Jack Nicklaus, one of the most famous golf architects in history, at the Monte Rei, golfers are guaranteed to have an unforgettable round of golf. Despite the huge range of golf in the Algarve and its constant expansion, the Monte Rei has continued to maintain a big name for itself in Europe. The main challenge here is characterised by the nature and placement of water hazards and bunkers; in order to maintain a steady scorecard, golfers must play with the perfect balance of length and accuracy across the 7,224-yard-long layout. Nicklaus certainly did not hold back in the use of water hazards for this layout, as they feature in eleven out of the eighteen holes here. The challenge does not simply end here; with original fauna and greenery, strategic bunkering and undulating terrain, the Monte Rei is not a good golf course for players to choose if they want to show off to their fellow players.

The par 73 Alferini golf course is a stand-out course in the midst of all the classic Spanish layouts in the Costa del Sol. Instead of just providing an attractive layout and a pretty scenery, the architect of the Alferini, Antonio Garcia Garrido, has succeeded in striving to create a fantastic golf course that offers a great challenge. Many of the golf courses in the Costa del Sol are typically attractive, and some might say they lack a certain edge to them. However, the Alferini puts this preconception to waste with a truly unique layout that is sure to provide a stern test of golf to all those that attempt it. The golf course was designed and created with its natural features in mind in order to preserve its original beauty and to maintain the landscape’s unique features. The par 5 16th hole is a particular stand-out to all of its players. At this hole, long hitters may initially revel in the lengthy and seemingly straightforward fairway. However, as any experienced golfer can advise – looks can often be deceiving! As the fairway approaches the green, it narrows significantly, therefore the element of accuracy must be focused in on as players soon find themselves surrounded by bunkers. With a unique layout that is sure to make low handicappers break a sweat, it comes as no surprise that Michael Campbell has labelled this hole as his favourite across the entire golf course.

The Le Golf National Albatros is known as the most challenging golf course in the surrounding areas around the French capital, therefore it hardly comes as surprising that it was selected as the 2018 Ryder Cup venue. It is fair to say that this golf course has lived up to each and every one of its expectations, and this has been shown to be the case as players return year after year. Golfers push their skills to their limit to make the most out of the risk-reward system the golf course operates on. Golfers are thrown into the challenge here from the get-go; however, the real challenge lies right at the end of the round at the par 4 18th hole. This is the hole to make or break an unforgettable round of golf with a huge water hazard positioned to the left side of the fairway and areas of dense bunkering on the right side. Here, the determinant of success lies in the approach shot. Whether players are happy with the end result or not, their round at the Le Golf National Albatros is sure to be a memorable one.

The La Manga Club West is the perfect golf course for any golfer looking for a challenging yet varied round of golf. The front and the back loops of nine differ in both their characteristics and the skills that they demand. The front nine holes demand golfers play with precise accuracy, and while the back nine appear to be more open, any decent player knows never to take anything at face value. The back nine might comprise of a more open layout in comparison to the narrow and compact front nine, however that is not to say that they are any less challenging. Golfers will find themselves thrown into the challenge from the very first hole, and they must do their best to play consistently as the course rapidly changes in elevation. If players are able to focus on anything but the challenge at hand, they should take their time to appreciate the immaculately kept landscape here; spectators frequently comment on the fantastic condition of the West golf course. At the La Manga West, the best is saved until last at the final 18th hole. Here, golfers must push themselves for one last time in order to give a half-decent tee shot. If they cannot do this, then there is usually some leeway due to the width of the fairway, but golfers should not count on this.

At the Acaya Golf Club, the challenge lies in the difficulty of club selection. If players can manage this, then they have a chance to do well here. There is a huge range of challenges to be met at the Acaya Golf Club, therefore golfers must choose their club carefully. Players must overcome strategically placed bunkers and water hazards that come into play at many of the holes here in order to score well. Whilst the Acaya Golf Club is undeniably one of the most challenging golf courses in Italy, it is also one of the most breath-taking due to its stunning location in the heart of the countryside. The architects of the Acaya Golf Club sought to incorporate the features of the natural landscape with their vision to create a fantastic golf course that forces players to use all of the clubs in their arsenal. It is certainly a unique aim to want to encourage players to use all fourteen of their clubs, however it is fair to say that this has been achieved, and it simply adds to the challenge. With three huge lakes and dense green areas consisting of olive groves, players must anticipate a testing round of golf that they are sure not to forget any time soon. The main challenge here is characterised by water hazards as the three lakes at the golf course come into play mainly in the back nine holes. The 16th, 17th and 18th holes comprise of tricky par fours; therefore, players must be sure to save the best of their game until last.

We hope that you have enjoyed this week’s blog, and hopefully, we have inspired you to push beyond your boundaries to truly test your golfing skills on your next golf holiday in Europe.

The course is fairly straightforward, but it does offer players a range of different challenges meaning that it is playable by both amateurs and low handicappers. This is by no means a boring course; the architects of the course have made it so that the course blends effortlessly into its beautiful landscape with some very interesting hazards as the landscape was originally marshland.

This week’s blog is a guide to nine of the best courses situated on the Costa del Sol. Whether you are looking for courses to base your next golf escape around or for inspiration for a golf break, look no further than one of these superb courses.

Santana is one of the newest golf courses on the Costa del Sol and has been constructed to a very high standard by Cabell Robinson. The course has been built on an avocado plantation and boasts the backdrop of the majestic Mijas Mountains. Despite the fact that this is one of the newest courses to have opened on the Costa del Sol, you wouldn’t know it as the course blends so beautifully into its surroundings – it could have been here for years and years.

The course is not the longest course in the area at just over 6,200 metres from the back tees, but it still poses a stern challenge to golfers of all abilities. There are many strategically placed bunkers and unusually-shaped, deep greens to contend with along your route round the course. There are also a few water carry-overs required as well. One of the most special holes on the course is the par 5 4th which is an incredibly long and spectacular hole with sophisticated bunkering, a little stream which lies in wait for your errant shots and a treacherous sloping green. With its unique ground, stunning scenery and an impressive layout has meant that this course will be on many players’ itinerary in the coming years. Make sure that this course is one you look out for an opportunity to play; the course is situated between Mijas and Fuengirola where you can find an abundance of brilliant properties to base yourself.

Next up, we have Real Club Valderrama which has been home to many prestigious golfing tournaments including the Ryder Cup in 1997 and the World Golf Championships in 1999 to 2002. This club regularly ranks within the top 10 courses in Europe and it really isn’t hard to see why. The club is an elite private members club, but you can still play during the set tee times for outside players. The green fee is not cheap but if you can justify it, definitely take your chance to play this incredible golf course as you really will remember the experience forever.

The course is beautifully in tune with its surroundings and it is always in perfect condition as the course is never over-played. The closing holes are considered to be the most difficult holes of the round but if you choose your tee option correctly, the whole course is playable for golfers of most abilities. The 17th is particularly special and it boasts water situated just in front of the green. This special course is one that should be on every discerning golfer’s bucket list so make sure that when you can, you grab the opportunity to book a tee time here.

A superbly challenging course; San Roque Old is a challenge for those of all abilities and boasts gently undulating, narrow fairways, large greens and many water hazards. The San Roque Club lies nestled in the foothills of the Sierra Bermeja Mountains and the Old course is set within a 340-acre estate where a luxury hotel and spa once sat. The course was designed by Dave Thomas and Tony Jacklin and opened for play in 1990. From the moment that the course opened, it has been regarded as a great test of golf, even for those with the lowest of handicaps. The course measures just under 6,500 metres from the back tees and has been the home to many professional tournaments in the past.

Although the course is considered to be undulating rather than hilly, there are some shocking elevation changes which mean that you must make your club selection correctly. The front nine of the course meander their way through mature forests of cork oak which means that your drive must be accurate to avoid the trees which are all lying in wait to catch any errant shots. There are new bunkers and water hazards which make it that bit more challenging. The back nine holes are less undulating but there are deep ravines and many bunkers lying in wait for errant shots. On some courses, once you reach the greens, your work is pretty much over but on this course, the greens are superbly contoured, always fast and generous in size. This is another very special course and is close to Valderrama so you can plan a golf break around these superb golf courses.

Torrequebrada golf course was designed by Jose Gancedo and was actually one of his first designs back in the mid-70s. The course isn’t overly long at 6,400 yards from the back tees but do not let its length fool you into thinking that this course is an easy round of golf. The course hugs the contours of its hilly landscape and tests golfers of the lowest handicaps with strategically positioned water hazards, doglegged fairways and deep, greenside bunkers.

The fairways are all tree-lined and they rise and fall over the hilly terrain, twisting and dipping in all directions making this a fun, challenging and exciting round of golf for all players. There are some particularly scenic and unusual holes situated along the course including the 7th which boasts an elevated tee, you must take the tee shot over a city street to a very narrow fairway. We would advise you not to use the driver as there is a lake guarding the hole which is tucked into the left corner. Like many brilliant courses, the 18th is a superb finishing hole. It boasts a grand view from the tee which is situated to the left of the fairway at the top of a hill, from which you can see both the 18th and the 6th fairways, the clubhouse and the stunning mountain backdrop. The tee shot is across a ravine and if you miss the fairway you are in trouble as there are sharp slopes to the left and bunkers to the right. Your approach shot must also be accurate as you have the same steep hill to the left and a large bunker to the right – this hole can ruin many scorecards. This course is definitely worth the green fee and is one that you should take a look at when you are planning your next golf escape to the Costa del Sol…

Chaparral Golf Club is one of the most recognisable golf courses in the Costa del Sol. It is a superb parkland course situated just 700 metres from the beach and enclosed by a forest of pine trees. The course follows the beautiful coastline of Mijas Costa which is just a short drive from the centre of Malaga and each of the holes along the course boasts stunning sea views. It is no surprise that this course is one of the most requested courses and regularly ranks as one of the top courses in Spain due to its stunning layout and beautiful location.

The course boasts undulating fairways which meander through dense, tree-lined fairways, if you manage to successfully navigate your way through the trees, avoiding the strategically placed bunkers then you will reach big greens with big borrows! One of the standout holes is the 477-metre long, 3rd hole which looks like a straightforward par-5 but it actually doglegs left and your tee shot must be placed down the right-hand side of the fairway in order to see what you must do for your second shot. The green is very long and narrow and there is a ditch which cuts diagonally across the fairway 100 metres from the green. This is a very special course and it is no surprise that is one of our most requested courses.

Next, we have the Marbella Club which is a very impressive and exclusive golf course situated just a few miles west of Marbella, nestled in the foothills of the mountains. The course opened in 1999 and was designed by Dave Thomas. One of the great things about this course is that the club only allows 75-80 players to play the course each day in order to keep it in good condition and to make sure that you can enjoy your round at your own pace. The course was designed to test golfers of all abilities with its strategically placed bunkers, well-manicured greens and sloping fairways.

The course measured just over 6,900 yards from the back tees and has a hefty par of 73 to match the course’s yardage. The two loops of nine holes are routed over hilly terrain and both return to the impressive clubhouse at the lowest points on the course. A round on Marbella Club is a great, exciting one and due to its location, you can find other brilliant golf courses and some superb resorts to base your golf break from.

Alcaidesa Links is one of the best links courses in Spain. The course was opened in 1990 and then remodelled in 1999 where its playability was improved, fairways were widened and some of the more severe undulations of the greens were ironed out. This undulating, cliff-top seaside course boasts stunning views over the Mediterranean, the Straits of Gibraltar and the Atlas Mountains in North Africa in the distance.

The course boasts a classic out-and-back routing, the first four holes head towards the shoreline and the mile-long beach, holes five to 14 play out along the coast where the wind will challenge you. The fairways then head back inland to finish the round in front of the clubhouse. If you are looking for an impressive course with stunning views, an interesting layout and one that poses a challenge to golfers of all abilities then look no further than Alcaidesa Links for your next golf break.

Finca Cortesin was designed by the world-famous architect, Cabell Robinson. The layout of this course is simply spectacular, it is a long one at 6,808 metres and boasts a variety of natural vegetation like olive trees and corks around the course. It opened for play in 2007 and has since built up a great reputation and the course has played host to European Tour events including the Volvo World Matchplay Championship.

There are many great holes within the course but there are a few very special ones. The 3rd hole is a delightful par-5 which boasts a difficult approach shot over water. There is the 10th which is a long, down-hill par-3 which has far-reaching views of the Estepona Mountains. This brilliant hole is followed by the 11th which is a double doglegged par-5 which is a stern test of golf and an exciting hole to play. The club boasts excellent practice facilities and a lovely clubhouse. In 2008, the five-star Finca Cortesin Hotel, Golf and Spa opened which is a perfect place for you to base your next golf escape from. Although a tee time at Finca Cortesin is not cheap, it is well worth it, and you will not be disappointed.

Last, but certainly not least, we have Rio Real which is one of the oldest courses in the area as it opened in 1965. This course is one of the coast’s most requested courses due to its superb condition, excellent value and very convenient location just north-east of Marbella. This is a delightful, walkable golf course as the terrain is just gently undulating. The course has retained much of its original charm with its pine and palm tree-lined fairways, well-bunkered green sites and a few water hazards for you to contend with along the way.

One of the most memorable holes along the course is the par-4 4th hole which doglegs left from the background sound of the traffic on the tee to the crashing of waves on the seafront. The green is located right on the coastline. You can find another long, par-4 at the 8th hole which is a brilliant hole that veers left from an elevated tee position and ends with a downhill approach to a very small green that is situated into the hillside. This is a very special course and boasts the great Rio Real Golf Hotel from which you can easily play this stunning course and those in the local area.

We hope that you have enjoyed this week’s blog and that you will think about one, or hopefully more, of these courses next time you are booking a golf escape to the Costa del Sol. Make sure to give us a call to discuss these courses and the brilliant hotels in the area.

This week’s blog is a guide to the great hotels and resorts that you can enjoy which boast an incredible 18-hole golf course onsite. Stay-and-play holidays are perfect if you have an excellent resort and a great golf course that you can enjoy for a few rounds and these recommendations are not exceptions to that criteria.

La Cala Golf Resort has established itself as being the premier golf resort on the Costa del Sol and it isn’t hard to see why with its luxurious accommodation, brilliant facilities and no less than three excellent golf courses onsite. The resort is up in the hills just ten minutes from the bustling town of La Cala which makes it the perfect destination for a great stay and play golf escape as you have the luxury of playing on three different golf courses – La Cala America, Asia and Europa – as well as being just ten minutes from a great town where you can find the beach and an array of different bars and restaurants to enjoy. La Cala America is a hilly and brilliant course which is built high up in the hills around La Cala Resort and boasts excellent views because of this marvellous position but, don’t be distracted by the views as you must hit straight in order to score well. La Cala Asia is similar to the America course except that it is narrower and shorter, but this doesn’t mean that it is easy, as it is actually the most difficult course out of the trio. La Cala Europa was the third and final course to be built at La Cala and boasts the same excellent features including elevated tees, rolling fairways and big, undulating greens but is a little easier with wider fairways and less penal rough. With three excellent courses, a superb location and lovely accommodations to enjoy it is no surprise that we recommend this resort for your next stay and play golf break.

Next up, we have the fantastic La Manga resort which boasts a whole range of different leisure activities as well as two excellent options for accommodation and three excellent golf courses. You can choose to stay at the five-star hotel – La Manga Club Principe Felipe – which boasts stunning public areas, beautiful guest rooms and a lovely pool area and pool bar which you can enjoy after a tough morning out on one of the golf courses. Alternatively, you can choose to stay in the four-star La Manga Club Las Lomas Village where you can find excellent apartments which are fully-fitted with a kitchen and living area each to make your break an easy one with self-catering options. At La Manga, you can enjoy access to their impressive spa which is built across two floors and boasts all of the facilities that you would expect from a spa on a resort as impressive as this one. The three La Manga courses offer you enjoyment right from the first tee with stunning views and tricky shots to contend with. This is another excellent resort, but this time situated in Murcia, that we highly recommend for your next golf break.

Precise Resort El Rompido is a fabulous and luxurious five-star hotel situated overlooking the two El Rompido courses just a short drive from the picturesque fishing village of El Rompido. The hotel offers excellent facilities including a brilliant spa which boasts an indoor swimming pool, Turkish baths and a sauna. There is also a lovely outdoor pool which you can relax around after enjoying a round or two on the excellent 36-hole golf course situated on-site of the hotel. The rooms are all beautifully decorated and boast all of the facilities that you would expect from a hotel of this standard including a satellite TV and a minibar. You can enjoy rounds on both the El Rompido North and El Rompido South whilst you are here, but this hotel is in a great location for golfers as there are so many other great golf courses in the area that you can enjoy as well. If you are looking for a beautiful hotel in which to enjoy an excellent stay and play golf escape, then look no further then Precise Resort El Rompido.

Last, but certainly not least, is the Dolce Campo Real Golf Resort and Spa which is a stunning five-star hotel set in the stunning Portuguese countryside and is surrounded by vineyards and lovely villages. The resort is located just 30 minutes’ drive from Lisbon and the airport, the model hotel offers a wide range of facilities including the excellent 18-hole Camp Real golf course, tennis courts, a lovely spa and a variety of different restaurants to enjoy. Nearby to the hotel, you can reach the stunning beaches of the Silver Coast which are perfect to relax on after a difficult round on the golf course if you can drag yourself away from relaxing in this luxurious hotel. This is an excellent location for your next stay-and-play golf escape and it isn’t hard to see why with its excellent golf course, great facilities and superb location.

This week’s blog is a guide to some of the best golf courses from around the world that we recommend having on your bucket list. There are some spectacular golf courses out there and if you are a discerning golfer you will have identified the ones that you want to have the opportunity to play but we recommend these brilliant courses as a round on one of these courses is truly unforgettable.

Both of the courses at Fairmont St Andrew’s are incredible and each deserve a place on this list and it isn’t hard to see why. The Kittocks course is situated on elevated ground next to the cliff-tops and boasts a fantastic and dramatic design that is a brilliant test of golf. The course features two man-made lakes but the layout of the course honours the tradition of golf at St Andrew’s with two double greens and many deep pot bunkers. As you play your round, you will meander along the Fife coastline where you can enjoy beautiful views over St Andrews which just adds to the brilliant feel of this course. Beware of this course, you may be eased in for the first few holes but when you get to the par-5 5th hole, you never really look back. The Torrance course is a testing one at 7,230 yards from the back tees. The course played host to The Open in 2010 and is a top-quality course right from the welcome that you receive in the clubhouse to each and every one of the well-manicured greens. The course is built on the cliff tops and whilst you are enjoying your round you can enjoy stunning views over the North Sea. Like its sister course, you have a gentle start, but the course soon becomes trickier. With a professional welcome at the clubhouse and great service as well as two beautifully manicured courses which both will provide you with an excellent test of golf, it is no surprise that we recommend that Fairmont St Andrews Golf Club has a place on your golfing bucket list.

Next, is the brilliant Albatros at Le Golf National which is considered to be one of the best championship courses in Europe and so it is no surprise that the course will host the 2018 Ryder Cup. The course boasts brilliantly fast greens, undulating fairways and links-style bunkers which makes this course a strategic challenge of golf. During your round here, you will need to use every single club in your bag in order to score as well as you can. The finale of this course is very impressive, and the greens are surrounded by water hazards which makes it a fantastic and challenging end to the course and is sure to mean some last-minute drama at the Ryder Cup later this year. It is not surprising that this is a recommendation of ours for your golfing bucket list and so make sure that you book your golf break soon as possible as we are sure that this course will be getting a lot of attention this year…

Fancourt Golf Club’s Links course is another one that we highly recommend to you and is arguably South Africa’s premier leisure resort which is situated in the heart of the Garden Route. The course is situated on over 1,500 acres of lush African countryside and boasts the majestic Outeniqua Mountains as the perfect backdrop. This Gary Player course has a unique feel to it and is a magnificent round of golf with some amazing wildlife and scenery to enjoy during your round if you can pull your eyes away from the course! There are no easy holes on the course and the rough is severe and penal, if you’re a high handicapper this may not be the best course for you but is one that you can aspire to play.

The K Club is widely considered to be one of the most opulent golf resorts in Ireland so it isn’t hard to see why we have added this to our list of golf courses that should be on your bucket list. The Palmer Ryder course at K Club is a stern test of golf at 7,337 yards from the back tees. As you play your round here, you will have to take on many different challenges successfully in order to finish the round with a good scorecard. These challenges range from the vast number of water hazards to strategically placed bunkers and fast greens. This course should not be underestimated and even if you don’t score well, a trip to The K Club is a brilliant one with first-class service and facilities as well as a course with a fantastic layout and stunning views. There are some very intimidating holes which you must tackle carefully including the 16th which is a very long par-5 at just under 600 yards from the blue tees and boasts a double dogleg where you must navigate your ball around the water and bunkers as well as many trees before you get to approach the green which is protected on two sides by the River Laffey and is difficult to reach successfully. This is a brilliant course with some unique and interesting holes as well as a lovely clubhouse to enjoy a drink and meal in after.

Last, but certainly not least, is Real Club Valderrama which has hosted many championship golfing events since its opening and has justifiably been ranked as the number one course in Europe. It is always in immaculate condition and boasts a great design but is one that challenges even the best of golfers with many tight holes and hazards to navigate your way around. The closing holes are always described as being very tough but if you choose your tee option wisely then you should be able to get a fairly good scorecard. Although the green fee is a little expensive here, it is more than worth the money to get the chance to play on this world-renowned course.

We hope that you have taken a note of the courses you would be most interested in adding to your golfing bucket list and that you consider booking a golf break to one of them and the fantastic hotels that are nearby to these brilliant courses…

We hope that you have enjoyed this blog and whilst the weather is getting colder you are thinking about when you are going to book your next golf escape to the sun…

This week’s blog is a guide to some great courses and hotels that are close to an airport. When you are looking for your next golf break, it is sometimes good to consider courses to base your break around that are nearby to an airport. This can be ideal for short golf escapes to a sunny destination, perfect for long weekends away or even if you are not keen to hire a car whilst you are away as transfers are obviously cheaper if you stay closer to an airport.

A short drive from Lisbon’s city centre is the brilliant Belas golf course, just 25 minutes from Lisbon airport. The course meanders through mounds and from many of the tees you can enjoy stunning views across the Sintra Hills. From the white tees, this course is a long one at over 6,700 yards which makes it a fair challenge of golf, especially due to the other features of the course, including the penal rough where you could lose more than a few balls. Throughout the course, there is a selection of good par 3s including a few spectacular drop holes. There are some standout holes, including the 5th which is very long and has many strategically placed bunkers. The finishing four holes is brilliant beginning with the 15th hole which is a downhill rollercoaster par 5, there is then the heavily bunkered dogleg 16th hole, then the 17th which is exceptionally tricky with water on both sides of the green. The 18th is a fantastic finishing hole, it is a short par 4 where you are hitting downhill from the raised tee whilst avoiding the pond to the right. The course features some very memorable holes and views which makes it a great course to base your next golf holiday around, especially as it boasts such a great location between Belas and Lisbon. If you are looking to plan your golf break around this great course, look at the fabulous Sheraton Cascais Resort as you can play many more courses with that hotel as your base.

Next up, is the stunning four star Hotel Gran Ultonia – 18 minutes from Girona Airport. This hotel boasts a great location just a few hundred yards from Girona Cathedral and the Barri Vell District. Each of the rooms at this hotel is stylish and functional with elegant and modern bathrooms as well as all of the amenities that you would expect from a hotel of this rating. As the hotel boasts such a fantastic location, you are never far from great bars and restaurants but there are also two brilliant golf courses within close proximity of the hotel. The PGA Catalunya courses are both excellent but different which means that they are the perfect addition to your stay at Hotel Gran Ultonia. The PGA Catalunya Tour course may be a little shorter and easier to play than the Stadium course but with an abundance of pine trees and water hazards lying in wait for any errant shots, you cannot afford to not play with accuracy. It is a brilliant holiday course as it provides a challenge for golfers of all abilities.

The PGA Catalunya Stadium is arguably one of the best courses in Spain but it is a very challenging one, located just 7 minutes from Girona Airport. The course is very long and very hilly, however, there are five sets of tees to choose from so even golfers with higher handicaps are catered for here and may have a chance at scoring well if they can still play with accuracy! Right from the 1st tee you can see how brilliant this course is as you start off with an elevated drive to a dogleg left par 4 hole. Not only is the course a magnificent round of golf, but the scenery is beautiful – this is a world class course and not one to be missed out on when you are planning your next golf escape to the Costa Brava.

Alicante Golf Resort is located just on the edge of Alicante City, near San Juan Beach where the weather is great golfing weather practically all year round and as the course and Hotel Alicante Golf is 21 minutes from Alicante airport, so this is the perfect destination for a golf escape any time of the year. The course is a traditional one and since it opened in 1998, several alterations have been made including the addition of artificial lakes and rivers which have made the course a very tricky one. In order to score well, you must play strategically as there are many hazards along the course that can cause you to lose your ball. This is a brilliant course and Hotel Alicante Golf is a stunning hotel with brilliant facilities. This is the perfect hotel and course combination for a great golf break to Alicante regardless of the time of year…

Sandos San Blas Nature Resort and Golf boasts a stunning location just 10 minutes from Tenerife South Airport, and it is positioned right in the centre of its very own nature reserve and allows you to feel like you are separated from the rest of the world with nearby golf courses and the brilliant facilities at the hotel to enjoy. However, although everything here is peaceful and calm, just 20 minutes’ walk from the hotel is the town of Los Abrigos where you can find a wide array of different bars and restaurants to enjoy. The prestigious Golf del Sur sits just next door to the property and there are other courses nearby including: Amarilla Golf, Buenavista Golf, Golf Costa Adeje and Golf Las Americas. Golf del Sur is just 5 minutes’ drive from the hotel and the course runs along the stunning coastline. This is a truly scenic course with stunning views and interesting black volcanic sand bunkers, cacti and palm trees dotted around. Arguably, the signature hole of the course is the par 4 3rd hole on the North nine which is a lush and long hole and has a long and narrow green to reach beyond the bunkers and other hazards waiting. This is the perfect destination for your next golf break to Tenerife, especially with the tropical climate here all year round…

We hope that you have enjoyed this week’s blog and that when you are thinking about your next golf escape, consider somewhere easy to access from an airport so that you can make the most out of your time there – especially if it is a long weekend to blow away the cobwebs until we reach the summer months.

This week’s blog is our East Algarve special which moves on to the brilliant resorts and golf courses on the Costa de la Luz. With the days drawing shorter and the weather getting colder, it is time to start thinking about your next golf break abroad where you can get some sunshine and excellent golfing in. The Algarve & Costa de la Luz boast fantastic weather through from April to November usually and there are some great golf courses to enjoy as well as the weather, beaches, food and drink.

The four-star Praia Verde Boutique Hotel is situated amongst lush pine trees in a quiet location within the town of Castro Marim. Although the hotel is situated in a quiet location, it is just nine minutes’ walk from the beautiful Praia Verde beach and five minutes’ drive from the centre of Monte Gordo. Whilst you are not out exploring the local area, you can spend time relaxing by the hotel’s pool (and the pool’s bar!) or explore the hotel’s Lobby Market where there is a grocery store, bar, lounge and play area. The hotel is beautifully decorated with modern furnishings and all of the rooms are comfortable and spacious and feature all of the amenities that you would expect from a hotel of this standard. As you are close to nearby towns whilst staying here, you can venture out for food and drink but the hotel’s own restaurant, À Terra, serves delicious Mediterranean dishes made with locally sourced produce.

Whilst you are staying at the lovely Praia Verde Boutique Hotel, you can play on the brilliant Quinta do Vale which overlooks the Guadiana where you can play a challenging but fun course with its many doglegs and wide fairways. Quinta do Vale is a great holiday course as there are many strategically placed bunkers and other various hazards which will test players of all handicaps from amateurs to professionals. This is the perfect destination for your next sunny golf break in a beautiful boutique hotel with plenty to do and see in the local areas including beautiful beaches and great food and drink!

Hotel Isla Canela Golf is a brilliant four-star hotel which is just 17 minutes’ walk from the nearest beach and only five minutes’ drive from Isla Canela. Not only does the hotel boast its own brilliant 18-hole golf course on site but there is a lovely outdoor swimming pool for you to enjoy. All of the rooms are beautifully decorated with dark wood furnishings and colourful bathrooms, the rooms also have free Wi-Fi, air conditioning and a satellite TV. The hotel’s own restaurant, Thebussem Restaurant, serves both Mediterranean and International dishes for you to enjoy and there is also a café serving international breakfast and a tapas bar where you can enjoy tapas out on a terrace. Just 25 minutes’ walk from the hotel is a small selection of bars and restaurants besides the Guadiana estuary and of course, being only five minutes’ drive from Isla Canela means that there is so much to explore in terms of food and drink especially. Isla Canela golf course on site, is a brilliant course and one that many high handicappers enjoy due to the fact that it is fairly straightforward and boasts some amazing views. This is a great place for your next stay and play golf escape…

The five-star Precise Resort El Rompido is one of Andalucia’s gems with its lovely, peaceful setting, spa, outdoor pool and other facilities. The rooms are all beautiful and bright with private balconies, most of which have stunning sea views and all of which feature a minibar and satellite TV. You can spend your days relaxing around the outdoor pool, enjoying each of the spa facilities, out on one of the two golf courses which are on your doorstep or you can take a short drive into Huelva. The spa boasts an indoor swimming pool, Turkish baths, a sauna and many treatment rooms in which you can enjoy different massages and treatments. The hotel’s main restaurant is the Binidali Restaurant which is where you can enjoy a range of traditional Andalucian dishes as well as international cuisine either in the restaurant or out on the terrace. The hotel also boasts several bars, each with a different speciality and atmosphere for you to enjoy.

There are two excellent golf courses onsite, El Rompido South and El Rompido North. El Rompido South has a front nine which is very tight but the back nine opens up with far reaching views out across the coast – a very picturesque and interesting course, perfect for a holiday. El Rompido North is a fairly flat course but you must play with caution otherwise you will fail to avoid the many water hazards and the marshes which border a few holes on the back nine. This is the ideal destination for your next luxurious golf break with its two great courses, excellent facilities, stunning views and brilliant food – especially with the new semi-all-inclusive board basis.

Last, but not least, is the excellent four-star Islantilla Golf Resort which boasts a superb location next to the clubhouse and just a short walk from a commercial centre which has a small selection of shops and restaurants and just a short drive from a beautiful sandy beach and a main resort centre where you can find more restaurants and shops. There are lots of different leisure facilities on site of the resort including an outdoor pool and the Beach Club where you can take part in different watersports. This is a wonderful hotel with a lovely atmosphere and you must take advantage of the half-board basis so you can enjoy meals in the excellent buffet restaurant. In high season, the hotel’s Andalusian grill bar is open which is fantastic and there is also the Italian Restaurant which is open all year round and at the Beach Club there is a great lounge terrace which overlooks the sea. Islantilla Golf is a great 27-hole complex, the fairways meander through pine trees and from many of the holes you can enjoy stunning views over the Atlantic Ocean. It can be a tricky course as the wind frequently comes into play but this is a great holiday course. When you are planning your next golf escape to the Costa de la Luz this is the perfect place for you to stay and play…
