This week’s blog is a guide to six of the Algarve’s best golf courses, resorts, and hotels. Despite the development of budget golf holidays in other areas in Europe, the Algarve has remained to be one of Europe’s best kept golfing treasures. The Algarve has resisted the competition and has never failed to prove itself to be a fantastic golf destination. With options to suit every budget and preference, and a range of excellent golf courses and hotels, it comes as no surprise that the Algarve is a consistent go-to option for many golfers in Europe. Better yet, this coming September, all those that decide to book an unforgettable golf escape in the Algarve will be in with the chance of winning a full set of Titleist golf clubs with a golf bag included. Here, there is well and truly something for everything; two of the most popular destinations include Albufeira, most popular with golfers looking for a vibrant nightlife and cheap restaurant options, or for a luxurious golfing getaway, Vilamoura is an unbeatable option. Regardless of your budget or preference, the Algarve is sure to have something to offer each and every golfer.

The Monte Rei Golf and Country Club is a fantastic five-star option for a self-catered golf holiday in the foothills of Tavira. With Portugal’s best golf course located just next door, luxury villas and some stunning Portuguese villages just a short drive away, it comes as no surprise that the Monte Rei Golf and Country Club is one of our most popular accommodation options in Portugal. All of the villas here offer guests an unbeatably luxurious stay, with modern décor, large outdoor terraces and spacious living areas. While the resort comprises of self-catering villas, guests can easily opt for a night off cooking duty with one of the four restaurants located in the resort. Alternatively, the towns of Tavira, Monte Gordo and Cabanas are all located within a twenty-five-minute radius of the resort, so guests will never find themselves short of things to do or see during their stay here.

It is fair to say that while the Monte Rei Golf and Country Club offers golfers a fantastic five-star stay due to its excellent facilities, stunning location and modern villas, its main attraction is undoubtedly the Monte Rei golf course located just next door to the resort. The Monte Rei golf course was designed by the world-renowned golf architect Jack Nicklaus, so golfers are guaranteed an unforgettable round of golf here. With an impressive five lakes, a unique layout and some truly stunning landscapes set across the Serra do Caldeirão mountains, the Monte Rei golf course is an unbeatable option for a round of golf on your next golf holiday in the Algarve, providing your budget permits it! Despite only opening fairly recently in 2007, the Monte Rei has not struggled to prove itself to be one of the best golf courses across the whole country.

Another fantastic option for your next golf holiday in the Algarve is the Magnolia Hotel, set in the luxury Quinta do Lago resort, home to three excellent golf courses. The Quinta do Lago has aptly been labelled the ‘California of Europe’, and it is hardly difficult to see why. Home to stunning white beaches, some great golf courses and exclusive bars and restaurants, the Quinta do Lago resort is easily considered one of the most sought-after areas in the whole of the Algarve. The Magnolia Hotel is a great accommodation option to act as a base to enjoy all of the best highlights of this fantastic resort. The four-star hotel offers great value for money with three golf courses just a stone’s throw away, as well as some stunning local beaches. At the Magnolia Hotel, guests are in an unbeatable position to enjoy an unforgettable golf escape comprising of sun, golf and relaxation.

Just a stone’s throw away from the Magnolia Hotel in the Quinta do Lago resort are three of the area’s most popular golf courses; the Quinta do Lago Laranjal, the Quinta do Lago North, and the Quinta do Lago South. All three of these golf courses offer golfers a fantastic round of golf and an unruly challenge. The Quinta do Lago South is the ideal option for long hitters, as there is little demand for accuracy here, despite the abundance of water hazards. With fast greens, dense forest areas and beautiful landscapes, players are set to have a great round of golf here. Alternatively, the Quinta do Lago North has recently undergone dramatic renovations to bring it up to the standards of its sister golf courses in the Quinta do Lago resort, meaning it offers fantastic playability throughout the year. The Quinta do Lago Laranjal has often been described as the most challenging of the trio with its unforgiving narrow fairways with subtle undulations to test even the most experienced of players.

The Amendoeira Golf Resort is yet another excellent self-catered accommodation option for golfers in the Algarve. Located just a stone’s throw away from the prestigious Amendoeira Faldo and Amendoeira O’Connor Jnr, guests here are in the perfect position to enjoy some of the fantastic golf the Algarve has to offer. The Amendoeira Golf Resort comprises of a range of self-catered apartments and villas with panoramic views across the neighbouring Monchique Mountains, the Amendoeira Faldo and the Amendoeira O’Connor golf courses. All of the accommodation here is furnished in classic Moroccan décor with all of the modern essentials to ensure that all guests have a fantastic stay. Aside from the accommodation, the resort also offers a great range of leisure facilities to be enjoyed when golfers are taking a break from challenging the greens at the local Amendoeira golf courses, including several football pitches, tennis courses and a floodlit academy golf course to warm up for a gruelling round of golf.

Both the Amendoeira O’Connor Jnr and the Amendoeira Faldo golf courses are guaranteed to offer players a spectacular round of golf. Designed by the world-renowned golf architect Nick Faldo, the Amendoeira Faldo is a demanding par-72 championship golf course that is guaranteed to test even the most experienced of golfers. Golfers here are eased into their round with a leisurely front nine, then they are swiftly thrown into the challenge at the back nine holes with hilly terrain and an abundance of desert bunkers. The terrain at the Amendoeira Faldo is generally characterised by desert shrubbery and strategically placed bunkers, however in contrast, at the Amendoeira O’Connor Jnr golf course, players must use their A-game to overcome several water hazards that make up a wildlife sanctuary. Across the golf course, players must manoeuvre their shots around many lakes, streams and orange groves in order to finish with a steady score.

At the Pestana Dom Joao II Hotel, golfers are in the best position possible to make the most out of the stunning beaches the Algarve is known so well for. The resort is situated in the heart of Alvor, home to a great range of bars, restaurants, beaches and most importantly, fantastic golf. The entire interior of the resort was completely renovated just a few years ago so that the resort could compete with the high standards of many of the other hotels in the Algarve. All of the guest rooms here take advantage of the hotel’s stunning coastal setting just a short walk away from the beach, as all of the guest rooms have their own private balcony or terrace. Even when they are taking a break from playing golf at the local courses or soaking up the sun at the beach, guests will never find themselves short of things to do with a fantastic range of leisure facilities on offer. This hotel is a great option for families with a ‘Kid’s Club’, and at the beach, guests can find a great selection of water sports including jet skiing and windsurfing.

The Tivoli Lagos is yet another great accommodation option located in the heart of the Algarve in Lagos. Lagos is a great destination for a golf holiday with a range of bars and restaurants, as well as authentic Portuguese charm found in the cobbled streets of the old town area. Furthermore, during the summer season, the hotel runs a complimentary shuttle service to the local Meia Praia Beach, a beautiful beach with clear waters and white sand. The hotel has its own private beach club here, with a bar and large swimming pool lined with parasols and sunbeds, so the Tivoli Lagos is a great option for golfers looking to make the most out of the Algarve’s famous beaches. Furthermore, if guests want to stay local during the evenings and choose not to venture out into the centre of Lagos, then the hotel is also home to a great range of bars and restaurants, including an Italian, Portuguese and international restaurant, as well as a cocktail bar.

We offer a fantastic range of golf packages with the Tivoli Lagos so that golfers can enjoy some of the Algarve’s best golf courses with great value for money. The golf courses on offer in the packages include the two spectacular golf courses at the Vale do Lobo golf resort, the Royal and the Ocean golf courses, as well as the Espiche, Boavista and the Onyria Palmares golf courses. The Vale do Lobo Royal is without a doubt one of the most photographed golf courses in the world, and with its stunning landscapes and idyllic setting, it is not difficult to see why. Its sister golf course, the Vale do Lobo Ocean is home to a unique landscape with many pine, olive and orange groves to create beautiful views and a great challenge throughout. The Boavista is the most accommodating out of the golf courses on offer, with its rolling fairways and naturistic scenery that can even act as a stern test of golf to low handicappers. However, the Onyria Palmares is without a doubt a must-play golf course in the Algarve, as it is widely considered to be one of the golf courses responsible for the take-off of golf in the Algarve, setting the standard for the future of golf.

One of the most popular golf packages we offer in the Algarve includes the highly acclaimed Espiche Golf Lagos, located in the western province of the Algarve in the outskirts of the Monchique Mountains. The Espiche Golf Lagos is undoubtedly a challenging golf course that demands skill from even low handicappers. The fairways are very tight in areas, and to add to the unruly challenge, large bunkers are thrown into the mix on one of the many undulating greens. Despite being a relatively new addition to the fantastic range of golf in the Algarve, the Espiche Golf Lagos has steadily proved itself to be a valued member of the many golf courses in the Algarve. With an unforgiving hilly terrain, natural scenery and some unique holes, it comes as no surprise that the Espiche Golf Lagos is widely considered to be a must-play golf course in the Algarve.

The Palacio Estoril Hotel Golf and Spa is undoubtedly one of the most luxurious resorts we offer in Portugal, with its stunning classic Portuguese architecture and unbeatable location situated just moments away from Estoril’s main beach. Despite its opening way back in the 1930s, the Palacio Estoril Hotel Golf and Spa has still maintained its authentic charm and character in its décor and style. A stay here would not just be a fantastic option for your next holiday in Portugal because of its excellent service and facilities, but also because the hotel is located in easy reach of the Golf do Estoril, one of the most sought-after golf courses in the Lisbon region. The Golf do Estoril is widely considered to be among some of the most prestigious golf courses in Portugal, and conveniently for all guests at the Palacio Estoril Hotel Golf and Spa, this outstanding golf course is less than a five-minute drive away. The Palacio Estoril Hotel Golf and Spa proved itself to be James Bond worthy in 1969 when it featured heavily in many of the scenes in the sixth instalment, many of which were set around the hotel’s stunning pool area. The hotel truly has something for all guests, whether they are looking for a relaxing yoga session, an indulgent massage, or a swim in the large outdoor swimming pool. If guests want to explore the local surrounding area, the centre of Estoril is literally on their doorstep. The hotel offers its guests two fantastic restaurants and a bar, but if guests are looking to travel further afield, then there is a huge range of bars and restaurants just a few steps away from the hotel.

Another fantastic option for a luxury golf holiday by the beach is the five-star Westin Resort Costa Navarino. This resort is not only great for a golf break, but it also caters fantastically for families so that everyone can make the most of their holiday. Guests will find themselves in the perfect position to make the most out of some of Greece’s most stunning beaches, and of course, its capitating history. The resort is set on top of the beautiful Dunes Beach, and just an hour and a half away from the iconic Ancient Olympia site. If guests can manage to tear themselves away from the neighbouring beach and local historic attractions, then they can also enjoy an unforgettable round of golf on either the Dunes or the Bay golf courses. The guest rooms at the Westin Resort Costa Navarino are set in villas, and some of them even have their own infinity swimming pool. All of the accommodation here are fully equipped with all of the essentials to ensure that guests have an unbeatably luxurious stay. The resort offers guests endless opportunities to fill their days, aside from the two neighbouring golf courses, the Dunes and the Bay golf courses. Whether guests want to make the most out of the resort’s beach location with a range of water sports or spend their day in the recreational centre for a fun game of ten-pin bowling, volleyball, or badminton. Guests are also well and truly spoilt for choice with the resort’s huge range of bars and restaurants; whatever they fancy for dinner, they are sure to be accommodated for with an impressive eleven restaurants.

The Westin brand does not fail to disappoint yet again at the Westin Abu Dhabi Golf Resort and Spa. This resort offers guests the best of both worlds as they are tucked away in a resort away from all the hustle and bustle of the busy tourist areas in Abu Dhabi, but many of the area’s key attractions are just a short drive away. Two of the area’s most popular attractions, Ferrari World and the Sheikh Zayed Mosque, are conveniently located just a fifteen minute drive away, or if guests are looking to make the most out of the guaranteed sunshine, then Abu Dhabi’s best beach, the Corniche, is located just a twenty minute drive away. Not only is the resort’s location a major selling point due to its close proximity to some of the area’s key attractions, but the resort is also located just twenty minutes away from both the Abu Dhabi Golf Club, host to the HSBC Golf Championship, and the Yas Links golf course. The service at the Westin Abu Dhabi Golf Resort and Spa has said to be unmatched, and the standard of its facilities are set to follow. The resort’s main leisure facility is its spa which offers a huge range of treatments and special adults-only areas to ensure its guests are in the right position to take full advantage of the luxury the resort has to offer. Furthermore, only of the three outdoor swimming pools is strictly adults only, and guests can enjoy complimentary access to the exclusive Saadiyat Beach Club.

Yet another fantastic option for your next luxury golf holiday is the Hotel Las Madrigueras, located in Tenerife, one of the most popular golf holiday destinations on offer. Set just a ten-minute walk away from one of Tenerife’s stunning beaches and directly neighbouring the Golf Las Americas golf course, guests here are in the perfect position to have their best luxury golf break yet. Guests can benefit from the resort’s idyllic location away from the popular tourist spots in Tenerife so they can make the most out of the resort’s fantastic five-star facilities and the highly sought-after golf course located just next door. Furthermore, guests need not worry about a lack of dinner options with the hotel’s secluded location as the hotel is home to an award-winning restaurant which serves a varied a la carte menu every evening. Compared to many of the other luxury golf resorts, the Hotel Las Madrigueras offers a much more ‘intimate’ stay as there are only 44 guest rooms and just 13 suites. The hotel is also strictly adults only, meaning a peaceful and relaxing stay is guaranteed. All of the guest rooms here offer stunning views of the neighbouring Atlantic Ocean, the Las Americas golf course, and Tenerife’s small sister island, La Gomera. Even for a five-star hotel, the guest rooms here are particularly spacious with all of the essentials to ensure all guests have a fantastic stay. Tenerife benefits from a mild all-year round climate, so the hotel’s large outdoor swimming pool is always a popular spot to enjoy this.

Vilamoura is undoubtedly one of the most luxurious destinations in the Algarve, known for its world-class golf courses and its upmarket marina. A stay in Vilamoura is a luxurious experience in itself, let alone a stay in the Hilton Vilamoura As Cascatas Golf Resort and Spa. Here, guests will never find themselves short of things to do; the hotel runs a complimentary shuttle service to the nearby Falesia Beach in the summer season, plus the hotel lies just next to the Dom Pedro Pinhal golf course, widely considered to be among the best golf courses in the Algarve. With a fantastic range of leisure facilities, modern décor and spacious guest rooms, it comes as no surprise that the Hilton Vilamoura As Cascatas Golf Resort and Spa is widely considered to be a go-to option for a luxury golf holiday in Portugal. While the adults are challenging the fairways at the local golf courses, the resort’s children’s club can keep the little ones entertained so golfers never have to miss out. To fully relax and indulge in the five-star experience, guests can head to the 7Seven Spa, the largest spa facility in the whole of Portugal. Or alternatively, guests can make the most out of the almost guaranteed sunshine around one of the resort’s five outdoor swimming pools, all of which have different features, such as adults-only access or a faux beach setting. If guests would prefer a quiet night in and they do not fancy venturing into town for dinner, then the hotel is home to two a la carte restaurants. After a fantastic meal, guests can head down to the Beach Club for a well-deserved cocktail.

Last but not least is the five-star Fairplay Golf and Spa Resort, located in the heart of the Costa de la Luz. Guests here are truly in the perfect position to make the most out of the stunning views that Andalucía is known so well for. The resort offers an idyllic stay set in the rolling hills of Andalucía, with the well-known Fairplay Golf Club just next door. The Fairplay Golf Club was designed by Baron Paul Rolin who successfully created a fantastic golf course that can accommodate players of all skillsets and handicaps. With some technical holes, a beautiful landscape and superb facilities, it comes as no surprise that the Fairplay Golf Club is widely considered to be a must-play golf course on the Costa de la Luz Cadiz. If the neighbouring Fairplay Golf Club is not enough to keep guest preoccupied during their stay, then the resort is also home to a wide range of leisure facilities to keep each and every guest entertained. After a gruelling round of golf, guests can head to the Fairplay SPA for a well-deserved treatment, then head to the outdoor pool area to catch some rays. The resort was recently closed for a few years and only reopened in 2017 after completely renovating the guest rooms, so it is fair to say that they meet every standard for your next luxury golf holiday. Furthermore, the resort also opened with a brand new a la carte restaurant which offers al fresco dining on the sun terrace.

We hope that you have enjoyed this week’s blog and that it has encouraged you to loosen your purse strings to splash out on an unforgettable luxury golf holiday. This week’s blog is a guide to nine tricky golf courses for those who like a challenge. It is fair to say that golfers often do not tend to go after the easy option; they would much rather seize the opportunity to show off to their fellow players. Here, we have hand-picked some of the most challenging golf courses in Europe. All nine of these fantastic golf courses offer a stern test of golf that can be best appreciated by players that like to be kept on their toes, and those that ultimately search for an invigorating challenge.

The Espiche Golf Lagos is a hidden gem in the Algarve, one of the most popular golfing destinations in Europe. Players must navigate around the 18 holes here, through a unique layout with a challenge characterised by the strategic placement of greenery and fauna. While the fairways may appear to be on the generous side, with dense forestry lining the edges and subtle contouring, golfers are guaranteed an unforgettable test of golf. This par 72 golf course has been designed to incorporate most of the landscape’s natural features, which in turn creates a stunning landscape, and of course a fantastic challenge. Not only must golfers anticipate masses of greenery and fauna to manoeuvre their shots around; the layout is also rife with bunkers and water features that run their natural course throughout the course. Despite the Espiche Golf Lagos being a relatively new golf course in the Western Algarve, it has already established itself as one of the most challenging and unique golf courses in the area. With this layout, players will find they will succeed more in course management if they prioritise accuracy over the length of their shots. There are some truly tricky tight spots throughout, therefore the general line of advice for those that want to attempt the Espiche Golf Lagos is to take plenty of spare balls! Golfers must anticipate the challenge at the par-4 3rd hole as it is widely considered to be the most difficult on the course with a 409-metre-long uphill fairway. Whilst the fairway here appears to be generously wide, the subtle undulations are sure to trip up even the most experienced player.

The Dolce Campo Real Lisboa golf course is situated just half an hour’s drive away from the centre of Lisbon. Here, golfers can enjoy an invigorating round of golf across a unique terrain with rolling hills and valleys. The challenge does not end here; not only is the landscape truly unique with consistent elevation changes, but there are also dense areas of greenery and forestry throughout. Golfers must play with the perfect balance of accuracy and length in order to manoeuvre their shot across the many water hazards and some tricky doglegs which demand a blind shot. Even the most skilled players will find every element of their game challenged at the Dolce CampoReal Lisboa as they must overcome the natural terrain of the original landscape. Donald Steel, one of the most famous golf architects in the world, has created a fantastic golf course built on the natural beauty of the former terrain. The golf course that stands today is rife with the original landscape’s features, including the natural greenery and fauna weaving in and out of the stunning valleys and hills. Players are wrong for assuming they have an advantage with an anticipated view from the elevated tees; the greens are subtly undulating, creating a surprising challenge.

The Shire is widely considered to be among some of the best golf courses in the UK, as well as one of the most challenging. Designed by the leading golf architect Seve Ballesteros, the Shire golf course is guaranteed to keep golfers on their toes throughout their game. Players can enjoy a fantastically varied round of golf; at this golf course, no hole is even remotely similar. The golf course comprises of six par threes, six par fours and six par fives, all of which offer a unique layout and a stern test of golf. Long hitters will feel right at home here as their skills will be utilised best with the challenge to overcome the many large water hazards. They can reap the benefits of the risk-reward system at this golf course, and those that cannot rise to the challenge will be penalised. The challenge here does not just end at the strategic placement of the water hazards and the sheer size of them; there are over 10,000 trees at this parkland golf course just waiting to swallow any wayward shots. Furthermore, the greens are unbeatably fast and feature subtle contours to trip up even the most skilled golfer.

The Salobre New, formerly known as the Salobre North, is a distinctive golf course that is guaranteed to set the hearts racing of all players, regardless of their skill set or experience. This golf course offers a unique round of golf to its players with an original landscape that is sure to be remembered for years to come. Despite the fact that this par 69 golf course is not nearly as long as its sister golf course, the Salobre Old, nor the other golf courses in the surrounding area, that is not to say that golfers will find a round of golf here a walk in the park. The Salobre New was designed with the emphasis on the use of accuracy instead of length, meaning golfers must be sure to play with their A-game throughout their round. Despite only opening in 2008 as a new addition to the huge variety of golf in Gran Canaria, the Salobre New has already created a steady reputation for itself as one of the most challenging golf courses on the island. A highlight of the stern test of golf on offer at the Salobre New includes the par-4 10th hole where players must utilise the use of their iron in order to cross an undulating fairway to reach the multi-tiered green.

One of the most unique golf courses in the Algarve includes the Monte Rei, which has accurately been labelled as “the jewel in the crown of Portuguese golf”. Conveniently for players, the Monte Rei is home to a peaceful and tranquil atmosphere to soothe any tempers raised from the challenging layout they have to overcome. Designed by Jack Nicklaus, one of the most famous golf architects in history, at the Monte Rei, golfers are guaranteed to have an unforgettable round of golf. Despite the huge range of golf in the Algarve and its constant expansion, the Monte Rei has continued to maintain a big name for itself in Europe. The main challenge here is characterised by the nature and placement of water hazards and bunkers; in order to maintain a steady scorecard, golfers must play with the perfect balance of length and accuracy across the 7,224-yard-long layout. Nicklaus certainly did not hold back in the use of water hazards for this layout, as they feature in eleven out of the eighteen holes here. The challenge does not simply end here; with original fauna and greenery, strategic bunkering and undulating terrain, the Monte Rei is not a good golf course for players to choose if they want to show off to their fellow players.

The par 73 Alferini golf course is a stand-out course in the midst of all the classic Spanish layouts in the Costa del Sol. Instead of just providing an attractive layout and a pretty scenery, the architect of the Alferini, Antonio Garcia Garrido, has succeeded in striving to create a fantastic golf course that offers a great challenge. Many of the golf courses in the Costa del Sol are typically attractive, and some might say they lack a certain edge to them. However, the Alferini puts this preconception to waste with a truly unique layout that is sure to provide a stern test of golf to all those that attempt it. The golf course was designed and created with its natural features in mind in order to preserve its original beauty and to maintain the landscape’s unique features. The par 5 16th hole is a particular stand-out to all of its players. At this hole, long hitters may initially revel in the lengthy and seemingly straightforward fairway. However, as any experienced golfer can advise – looks can often be deceiving! As the fairway approaches the green, it narrows significantly, therefore the element of accuracy must be focused in on as players soon find themselves surrounded by bunkers. With a unique layout that is sure to make low handicappers break a sweat, it comes as no surprise that Michael Campbell has labelled this hole as his favourite across the entire golf course.

The Le Golf National Albatros is known as the most challenging golf course in the surrounding areas around the French capital, therefore it hardly comes as surprising that it was selected as the 2018 Ryder Cup venue. It is fair to say that this golf course has lived up to each and every one of its expectations, and this has been shown to be the case as players return year after year. Golfers push their skills to their limit to make the most out of the risk-reward system the golf course operates on. Golfers are thrown into the challenge here from the get-go; however, the real challenge lies right at the end of the round at the par 4 18th hole. This is the hole to make or break an unforgettable round of golf with a huge water hazard positioned to the left side of the fairway and areas of dense bunkering on the right side. Here, the determinant of success lies in the approach shot. Whether players are happy with the end result or not, their round at the Le Golf National Albatros is sure to be a memorable one.

The La Manga Club West is the perfect golf course for any golfer looking for a challenging yet varied round of golf. The front and the back loops of nine differ in both their characteristics and the skills that they demand. The front nine holes demand golfers play with precise accuracy, and while the back nine appear to be more open, any decent player knows never to take anything at face value. The back nine might comprise of a more open layout in comparison to the narrow and compact front nine, however that is not to say that they are any less challenging. Golfers will find themselves thrown into the challenge from the very first hole, and they must do their best to play consistently as the course rapidly changes in elevation. If players are able to focus on anything but the challenge at hand, they should take their time to appreciate the immaculately kept landscape here; spectators frequently comment on the fantastic condition of the West golf course. At the La Manga West, the best is saved until last at the final 18th hole. Here, golfers must push themselves for one last time in order to give a half-decent tee shot. If they cannot do this, then there is usually some leeway due to the width of the fairway, but golfers should not count on this.

At the Acaya Golf Club, the challenge lies in the difficulty of club selection. If players can manage this, then they have a chance to do well here. There is a huge range of challenges to be met at the Acaya Golf Club, therefore golfers must choose their club carefully. Players must overcome strategically placed bunkers and water hazards that come into play at many of the holes here in order to score well. Whilst the Acaya Golf Club is undeniably one of the most challenging golf courses in Italy, it is also one of the most breath-taking due to its stunning location in the heart of the countryside. The architects of the Acaya Golf Club sought to incorporate the features of the natural landscape with their vision to create a fantastic golf course that forces players to use all of the clubs in their arsenal. It is certainly a unique aim to want to encourage players to use all fourteen of their clubs, however it is fair to say that this has been achieved, and it simply adds to the challenge. With three huge lakes and dense green areas consisting of olive groves, players must anticipate a testing round of golf that they are sure not to forget any time soon. The main challenge here is characterised by water hazards as the three lakes at the golf course come into play mainly in the back nine holes. The 16th, 17th and 18th holes comprise of tricky par fours; therefore, players must be sure to save the best of their game until last.

We hope that you have enjoyed this week’s blog, and hopefully, we have inspired you to push beyond your boundaries to truly test your golfing skills on your next golf holiday in Europe.

This week’s blog is a guide to the Pestana golf course collection. The Pestana golf courses are situated on the Algarve and each boasts a great round of golf. Whether you are looking for a great holiday round or a stern test of golf, these courses can offer you that variety. Take a look at this great collection of courses and be inspired for your next golf holiday to the Algarve.

Alto Golf and Country Club was one of the last to be designed by Sir Henry Cotton and features brilliant, winding fairways and elevated greens which are a stern test for those playing with a lower handicap but also fair to those who are less accomplished golfers. The course’s features are similar to that to a UK parkland course, but of course, you have the weather associated with the Algarve to remind you that you are in fact, not in England. The course is beautifully positioned near to the picturesque village of Alvor and offers beautiful white sandy beaches, clear blue sea and interesting cliffs which add to the charm and character of the round. As you play the first nine holes of the course, you can enjoy the stunning views over Lagos Bay. The last nine holes travel back inland, running through gentle mountain slopes. This course is home to the longest home in Europe, the 66o-yard par 5 16th which is known as “The Giant”. This hole requires both concentration and skill in order for you to leave the hole with a respectable score. After your round, take a trip to the clubhouse where you can enjoy a few drinks whilst you reminisce over your round.

Silves is a beautifully picturesque course which opened for play in 2006 and since then, has gained a brilliant reputation for being a course that is always in immaculate condition. The course is set on gently undulating terrain in a rural area just 15 minutes inland. The course is surrounded by typical Algarve fruit orchards and small farms adding to the character of this beautiful layout. The first tee shot is a daunting one on this round as you must hit straight in order to avoid the water hazards strategically positioned on the fairway both on the right and the left. There are also many strategically placed bunkers in order to thwart those big hitters. However, this course is not an overly difficult one making it ideal as a holiday course for groups who have golfers of varying handicaps. Most of the holes along the course boast spectacular mountain views overlooking palm trees and olive groves. After your round, take a visit to the Silves Clubhouse where you can enjoy a few drinks and a bite to eat whilst discussing the round.

Next up, we have the Gramacho Golf Course which is situated near Carvoeiro in the Algarve. This course was originally a nine-hole course which has been extended and beautifully redesigned by Nick Price to become a full 18-hole course. Pestana Gramacho has hosted the Portuguese Ladies Open on a number of occasions and is recognised as a championship course which is enjoyable and playable by those with a higher handicap. The course winds its way over undulating terrain with olive, almond and carob trees scattered along the way. This is a challenging course which requires its players to be technically accurate in order to score well on the round. The Gramacho Clubhouse is the perfect place to sit and relax after your round, it is situated in the heart of the resort and boasts many services including club and buggy rental. There is a great restaurant and bar which boasts the most stunning views on the misty blue backdrop of the Monchique Mountains as well as overlooking the 18th hole.

The Vale da Pinta golf course is set in the Pestana Golf Resort near Carvoeiro is a quality course which beautifully incorporates the course’s natural landscape of rolling hills, olive groves and other indigenous trees and vegetation. The course is beautifully framed by the Monchique Hills. Shot-making and accuracy are very important on this course as there are many tight fairways, doglegs and an assortment of strategically placed hazards positioned to challenge golfers of all abilities. One of the most challenging holes is the par-five 4th hole which measures over 500 metres from the back tee. This hole requires a long and accurate uphill tee-shot towards a marker post, this is made more challenging by the fact that the fairway is bordered by rough on the right and out of bounds on the left. The rest of the hole stretches downhill, but the fairway narrows drastically towards the end before you reach the undulating green. Another brilliant hole on this course is the 13th which is a short par four which may seem easy, but there is a large lake and bunker on the far bank from the tee ensuring that a very good strike is necessary if you are to clear this combination of hazards. You can take the safer route right of the water, but this still means that you will have a tricky approach to reach the well-guarded, shallow green. There are several stand-out holes along this course but particularly special is the 18th which is a wonderful par five finishing hole measuring just under 600 metres. The hole requires three long, straight shots and if you make par, you have finished well. There is no doubt that Vale de Pinta boasts a great round of golf filled with excellent and testing holes as well as a superb location and wonderful clubhouse for you to enjoy after your round. Vila Sol is one of the most requested courses in the Algarve, there are 27 brilliant holes situated at the complex.

Vila Sol has hosted the Portuguese Open and is a brilliant test of golf designed by the famous English architect, Donald Steel. The course winds its way through an immense pinewood in which there are fig trees, oaks and almond trees. This is a typical inland golf course with narrow fairways which demand accurate driving as well as water and sand hazards and fast greens. Players of all abilities will find Vila Sol to be a stern but fair test of golf. The fairways are always maintained beautifully and of course, there are many strategically placed hazards along the course to catch any errant shots. Right from the first few holes, it is evident that Vila Sol is a challenging course. There are three holes which are par fours in excess of 380-metres long. There are many notable holes along the course including the 6th, 7th and 8th. The 6th is a long, downhill par five which features a large lake protecting the left half of the fairway, you then have to tackle the uphill approach to a small, heavily guarded green. The 7th is also a long, downhill hole during which you must carry your shot back over the lake towards a large, sloping green. Finally, the 8th is a classic park-like par five which gently doglegs right with a narrow stream running just in front of the green and back down the left side of the fairway.  The back nine holes at Vila Sol are slightly shorter but still maintain the challenge of the course. This is a solid course that challenges and rewards at every turn.

To keep your Golf Escape under the budget you desire can sometimes be a tricky job for the tour leader. Of course, everyone wants to play the best courses and stay in the nicest hotels possible, but often, it cannot be done for the set budget. If you can be flexible with your dates, then there are always some little periods in the year where there is a deal to be had. So here are our top tips of when to stay and play at certain hotels and courses for the 2019/20 season.

Our first visit is to Las Colinas golf course on the border of the Costa Blanca and Murcia regions. Voted Spain’s best course 3 years in a row at the World Golf Awards, this is one that should be on everyone’s list to play. Littered with bunkers and huge water hazards, it is a course that is very pleasant on the eye. With little else around the course too, it is a peaceful experience, which helps as you work your way around this challenging course. But when should you play it? September. Las Colinas class September as their ‘low season’, even though it is a lot of regions most popular month for golfers. They cut the prices by 25% and makes one of Europe’s best courses a very affordable round of golf. Coming in at below £80 per person with a buggy included too, you have to include it in your itinerary for anybody staying from La Manga right up to Benidorm. It is well worth the journey.

The next stop off is in the Eastern Algarve and we are going to talk luxury. Not just luxury accommodation, but a golf course to match it too. Monte Rei Golf & Country Club is one of Portugals finest golf resorts, perhaps even the best. Its huge Villas are traditional in design with modern touches throughout, making it the perfect place to relax before tackling the demanding
course on site. The Nicklaus course of Monte Rei is a Golf Escapes favourite and has to be considered a bucket list course that competes with some of the best courses in the world. Perfectly maintained all year, stunning surroundings and a level of service you can’t imagine is why this course is so superior to many others. Sounds expensive right? For a resort this good, it is worth paying for, but in the prime golfing period between 01st – 14th March, You could do 3 nights and 2 rounds (with buggies and range balls) from £359 per person! So, I bet we can guess where you will be going next March!

The Canary Islands. Known for its steady warm temperatures all year round, making it a fantastic winter golf destination where you can get away from the rain, wind and snow in the UK for some golf in the sun. The golf courses know this though and for that reason, their high seasons are from October through to April. So why don’t we go there in May or September? Same weather, same golf courses, but a fraction of the price. For example, Costa Adeje Golf in Tenerife. If you were to play this course on the 1 st of May or September, compared to the 1 st of November or February you would save over £35 per round!

The same for Salobre Old Course in Gran Canaria. You would save over £25 per round at this golf course. These are just two examples, but similar savings are to be had at all courses in Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura during the ‘summer’ months. It seems strange to think things would be cheaper at these times of the year, but it really is the case, we promise.

When you think of a good time of year to play golf abroad, most people would say April, May September give you the full package. Sun, but not too hot and also not paying the high hotel prices that June, July and August bring. Nestled right in the centre of Paphos new town is the Dionysos Hotel, this property offers an unbelievable price in April. Peak golf season and with average temperatures 21°, this has to be the perfect opportunity to visit such a fantastic golf destination. The 3-star hotel in a perfect location is £20 per person, per night cheaper in April that it is in September! This hotel paired with the fabulous courses the island has to offer such as Aphrodite Hills, Secret Valley, Elea and Minthis makes for the perfect golfing getaway for couples and groups alike. They very much look forward to welcoming you in the most wonderful Cypriot manor.

Next is an option for groups on a budget. Mar Menor Golf Resort in Murcia is a resort that continues to baffle everyone here at Golf Escapes, but for all the right reasons. The resort has a 5-star hotel, 4-star apartments, a good selection of bars and restaurants and a lovely Jack Nicklaus golf course all within a stone’s throw of each other. Yet the apartments, known as ‘The Residences at Mar Menor’ is one of the cheapest and best value packages available in Europe. The resort is cheap all year
round, but to make it even better, they class the golfing peak season of May as their ‘low season’. So let’s talk numbers. 3 nights 2 rounds from £159 & 7 nights 4 rounds from £309 in May, yes May! Not only is there a great course on-site, but there are also 6 other courses that you can play for no extra cost and use the free shuttle bus provided by the resort to take you there too. We hope to see you there in May, because we will be there.

Praia D’el Rey. I am sure most of you have heard of the resort north of Lisbon and most would think of it as a prestigious golf course. That’s because it is. It has recently had a rather good addition to the resort too. West Cliffs golf course opened 18 months ago and has quickly become one of the most sought- after courses in the country. These two courses mixed with Royal Obidos and Bom Sucesso (all within 15 minutes of each other) makes for one of the best selections of courses to play in Europe.
Back to the question of when to visit though… To be honest, we’ve cheated with this one. Go at any time. Any time from April until June and from September until the end of October is when we would recommend though. It can be a bit chillier here in the lower seasons, so nice to wait until the weather warms up, but when it does, it is a place of stunning natural beauty. Prices at either the 5 star Marriot Praia D’el Rey Hotel or the Praia D’el Rey Village (apartments and villas) are fantastic value for money during these periods. It is another resort that is hard to understand why it is so cheap considering the quality of golf courses. With 4 nights and 3 rounds staying in the village starting from £245 this package would be at least double the price if the resort was based in the Algarve. Golf Escapes really can’t applaud this resort highly enough as it is a truly unbelievable destination for the keenest of golfers.

Last but certainly not least… The Conrad Algarve. Voted in the top 5 hotels in the Algarve on TripAdvisor, a Michelin Star restaurant and awards under its belt such as having the best spa and the best hotel suite in Europe. The hotel is situated in the perfect location of the classy town, Quinta do Lago. Opposite bars and restaurants and 3 world class golf courses (Quinta do Lago North, South & Laranjal) within 5 minutes, this hotel has everything to offer. The hotel is luxury in every sense of the
word and is one of the most expensive hotels in the Algarve and rightly so. It is quite simply outstanding. Of course, though, it wouldn’t be in this article if it didn’t have a sneaky period where it becomes a place where anybody can visit. This period is from the beginning of March until the beginning of April, the perfect time of the year for golfers. It is literally half the price in March
compared to June & September. A Golf Escape of pure quality throughout is very possible and more than affordable in the month of March and if you wanted to treat yourself next year, get it booked sooner rather than later for even further discounts.
We hope this might have helped plan your holiday for this year and next. Be as flexible as possible with your dates and you never know what deals might just be a few days away from the dates you were first thinking.

This week’s blog is a guide to the courses that we consider as being the top nine courses situated in the Algarve. The Algarve is widely considered as being one of the best golf destinations in Europe due to the brilliant golf courses and luxurious golf resorts that you can find there. Another good thing about choosing the Algarve as your destination for your next golf escape is that the courses are mostly close to one another which means that whilst you are staying at one resort, it is easy for you to play a variety of great courses. With the weather chilly and winter feeling like it may ask forever, make sure to get your next golf break in the diary so that you have something to look forward to.

Monte Rei’s Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course opened in 2007 and quickly established itself as one of the finest courses on the Algarve. From the moment that you arrive at the club which is set in the hills to the northeast of Tavira, you will know that you are going to be taking on a stunning course due to the beautiful scenery that greets you. The course boasts five lakes which are all bordered by indigenous trees and plants as well as many strategically placed bunkers which all are lying in wait for any errant shots.

As you play the course, the holes just get better and better but some of the best holes of the course include the 13th which is a downhill par-4 with bunkers situated at the drive landing point and a lakeside green that is treacherously undulating. The prettiest hole of the course is undoubtedly the 14th which is a medium-length par-3 where you must carry your tee short over the lake in order to reach the green, anything off to the left will land right in the water. Of course, a course like Monte Rei has a special finishing hole, the 18th is a brilliant finishing hole, it is a par-5 that is in reach for big hitters, but you must watch out for the lake that can mess up anyone’s 2nd or 3rd shot! If you are looking to play a very special round of golf, look no further than a round at Monte Rei.

Next up, we have Palmares which boasts three loops of nine fantastic holes: Lagos, Alvor and Praia. The 27-hole complex is situated above and along the Atlantic coast close to the Meia Praia beach and boasts some of the most beautiful views from different points along the course. The Alvor course starts as you wind through pine tree-lined undulating fairways before dunes and links-style holes come into play, you then finish playing in parkland. The course boasts three fairways which are laid out across a road in a lovely valley in the middle of the loop and the loop’s final two holes face directly uphill towards the clubhouse.

The Lagos loop maintains the same parkland and links characters as Alvor, but also boasts two water hazards that you must contend with along the way. The Praia rolls its way down towards the beach and is mainly a classic links course with four beautiful coastline holes. All 27 brilliant holes of golf are fully matured making Palmares one of the Algarve’s must-play golf courses. It is not really surprising that this club made our list of top nine courses in the Algarve due to its fantastic setting, unique layout and brilliant clubhouse which boasts stunning views over the course.

Quinta Da Ria opened for play in 2002 and was designed by the well-known architect, Rocky Roquemore. This brilliant course can be found in the Eastern Algarve and is situated within the beautiful Ria Formosa Nature Reserve which stretches from Faro right along the coast towards the border with Spain. The course measures 6,016 metres from the back tees and is a fairly flat parkland course but there is normally a breeze coming in from the coast which can make your round a little difficult. A round here is a great choice for golfers of all abilities due to its wide landing areas but if you manage to miss these, you will be in trouble. There are five strategically placed lakes, many bunkers and carob and olive trees situated around the course which all lie in wait for any errant shots.

There are some brilliantly-designed, tough holes on the course including the 5th which is an impressive par-3 which has two differing tee areas, but both require you to carry a good tee shot over a lake towards the shallow green which is heavily guarded by bunkers. Another very special hole is the 10th which is a very difficult hole measuring 422 metres from the back tees with out-of-bounds running all down the left-hand side. Then, there is a large lake guarding the green 100-metres out! With an excellent range of holes, beautiful landscape and a superb location, look no further than the Quinta da Ria course for your next golf escape.

The coastal town of Vilamoura boasts a wonderful, central location and it is no surprise that it has earned a reputation for being one of Europe’s largest and most successful golfing destinations. The Dom Pedro Old Course is one of the gems situated near to Vilamoura and it is no surprise that this course is on our list of recommendations. The course opened for play in 1969 and has gained a brilliant reputation since partly due to its sympathetic use of the existing natural landscape. The tees and greens are always beautifully kept, and the fairways are lined with trees which means that if your drive isn’t straight, you may struggle to end the round with a good scorecard!

Each and every hole will remain with you for long after you have finished your round on the Old Course. The round begins with a straightforward set of four holes but the rest of the front nine is tricky and pose a challenge to even the best golfers. The signature hole is arguably the 8th hole which stretches over 400 metres from the medal tees, the hole slopes downhill to a fairway bunker before doglegging gently to the right and then rising back up towards a narrow green which is heavily guarded by trees! If you score a par on this hole, you have played very well. The back nine are also very tricky and you should watch out for the collection of strategically placed bunkers which come into play on the 12th hole and are lying in wait to catch your second shot. After your round, enjoy a few drinks in the well-designed clubhouse. A round here is a spectacular one and no discerning golfer should miss out.

The Penina Championship course opened in 1966 but was then completely rebuilt in 1995 and boasts two loops of nine holes. The sun is often shining during your round here and you can enjoy the smell of eucalyptus trees whilst you tackle this impressive course. The fairways are gently rolling and well-manicured but feature many strategically-placed hazards including deep bunkers and trees. Right from the moment that you tee off here, you will know that you are in for a challenge as the 1st hole is a long dog-leg left towards a heavily-guarded narrow green. Another impressive hole on the front nine is the 5rh which is the only par-5 on the front nine and only measures 451 yards from the back tees. However, this hole is the perfect risk-reward hole as if you place your tee shot well, you may want to try for the green in two shots but there is a large lake and out-of-bounds waiting for any slightly errant shot.

In contrast to the front nine, there are four par-5s, but the two standout holes are considered to be the 12th and the 13th. The 12th is a long par-4 which is a very straight hole with only one bunker but once you arrive for the approach shot, you will find that the small green sits directly behind a lake which goes on to cause further problems for your scorecard on the 13th hole. Lots of golfers fall foul of the lake which guards the 13th hole which is a long par-3 which boasts a narrow and sloped-towards-the-water green. There is no doubting that this is a very impressive course and the Penina Hotel is a fantastic option for your next golf escape…

Situated in the Quinta do Lago Estate is the San Lorenzo course which has been ranked in the past as being the second-best course in the whole of Europe. It isn’t hard to see why San Lorenzo was given this title with its beautiful location alongside the Atlantic on sandy, undulating terrain and variety of interesting and challenging holes. The first five holes of the course run through a pine tree forest, you will then find water holes which boast stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean. The par-3 5th hole is where you will get your first glance of the Atlantic Ocean and is a delightful short hole with a green perched at the top of a valley which is heavily guarded by trees and bunkers.

At the 8th hole, you will turn back inland and tackle the larger of the course’s two lakes. The finishing holes are particularly strong and entertaining as you head back out to sea. The 18th hole is a difficult and long par-4 at over 400 yards from the back tees. You will find water all the way up the left-hand side and a semi-island green. This is a classic risk-reward finish which tops off the very special round of golf here nicely. After your round, take a visit to the clubhouse and enjoy a few drinks and a bite to eat whilst discussing this impressive course. For any discerning golfer, a trip to San Lorenzo is a must.

Quinta do Lago Estate boasts three other courses besides San Lorenzo: North, South and Laranjal. These are all fantastic courses that are different and exciting in their own ways. The North course is one of the Algarve’s most charming courses, many of the holes are framed with umbrella pine trees and some of the greens are nestled in truly magnificent sites.

One of the most beautiful holes on this course is the par-4 12th which measures 361 metres and features a 3-acre lake. The hole doglegs its way around the leg which leaves you to make a treacherous approach shot in order to land on the undulating green. The course was recently redesigned in close collaboration with European Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley and is considered to be a very special course indeed. This is a course that golfers can enjoy again and again making it an ideal holiday course.

Quinta do Lago South is one of the most requested courses on the Algarve. The course was designed by William Mitchell and opened for play in 1974 and became well-known after it hosted the Portuguese Open on seven occasions. This course is the most famous in the area due to the Portuguese Open and can be enjoyed by golfers of all abilities due to its relatively generous fairways. This eye-catching course is great for big hitters, but accuracy is also required if you want to finish the round with a good scorecard. It is no surprise that the South course made our list of recommendations and if you haven’t played this one already, make sure that you book it in.

Last, but certainly not least, Quinta do Lago Laranjal was originally an orange grove but today, it is a beautiful 18-hole championship golf course which offers its players a fantastic and challenging round of golf. The course is known for its narrow, undulating fairways, five stunning lakes and well-defined greens. The course is the newest of the three on the Estate as it only opened for play in February of 2009, but it is quickly gaining a stellar reputation. This is a fun and exciting course and is the perfect addition to your golf escape to the Algarve.
