Besides the great wine, the two golf courses are the most impressive thing about the Golf du Medoc Hotel and it isn’t hard to see why.

Les Chateaux is the bigger course of the two and is highly regarded as being one of the best courses in France and has been awarded titles such as “The Best Course in France” in both 2014 and 2016 at the World Golf Awards. Much like its sister course, a round on this course will challenge your consistency and will provide you with an exciting round from start to finish.

There is a stream running through the course which comes in to play on 12 of the 18 holes but otherwise, this is a friendly course with lovely scenery and a great location.

Venturing out of the city, you can explore all areas of the Lisbon region including the Estoril, Sintra and Cascais triangles on the coast to the northwest and on the south, you can find several brilliant courses on the Costa Azul. An hour to the north, you can find Praia d’el Rey and Royal Obidos.

The key golfing areas include Obidos and Cascais. Obidos is widely considered to be one of the most picturesque towns in Portugal and boasts beautiful resorts and courses. The Royal Obidos course is a very special course with unique and challenging holes right from the first one. We hope that you have enjoyed this week’s blog and that you will consider one of these superb properties for your next golf escape…

This week’s blog is a guide to some of the best golf courses from around the world that we recommend having on your bucket list. There are some spectacular golf courses out there and if you are a discerning golfer you will have identified the ones that you want to have the opportunity to play but we recommend these brilliant courses as a round on one of these courses is truly unforgettable.

Both of the courses at Fairmont St Andrew’s are incredible and each deserve a place on this list and it isn’t hard to see why. The Kittocks course is situated on elevated ground next to the cliff-tops and boasts a fantastic and dramatic design that is a brilliant test of golf. The course features two man-made lakes but the layout of the course honours the tradition of golf at St Andrew’s with two double greens and many deep pot bunkers. As you play your round, you will meander along the Fife coastline where you can enjoy beautiful views over St Andrews which just adds to the brilliant feel of this course. Beware of this course, you may be eased in for the first few holes but when you get to the par-5 5th hole, you never really look back. The Torrance course is a testing one at 7,230 yards from the back tees. The course played host to The Open in 2010 and is a top-quality course right from the welcome that you receive in the clubhouse to each and every one of the well-manicured greens. The course is built on the cliff tops and whilst you are enjoying your round you can enjoy stunning views over the North Sea. Like its sister course, you have a gentle start, but the course soon becomes trickier. With a professional welcome at the clubhouse and great service as well as two beautifully manicured courses which both will provide you with an excellent test of golf, it is no surprise that we recommend that Fairmont St Andrews Golf Club has a place on your golfing bucket list.

Next, is the brilliant Albatros at Le Golf National which is considered to be one of the best championship courses in Europe and so it is no surprise that the course will host the 2018 Ryder Cup. The course boasts brilliantly fast greens, undulating fairways and links-style bunkers which makes this course a strategic challenge of golf. During your round here, you will need to use every single club in your bag in order to score as well as you can. The finale of this course is very impressive, and the greens are surrounded by water hazards which makes it a fantastic and challenging end to the course and is sure to mean some last-minute drama at the Ryder Cup later this year. It is not surprising that this is a recommendation of ours for your golfing bucket list and so make sure that you book your golf break soon as possible as we are sure that this course will be getting a lot of attention this year…

Fancourt Golf Club’s Links course is another one that we highly recommend to you and is arguably South Africa’s premier leisure resort which is situated in the heart of the Garden Route. The course is situated on over 1,500 acres of lush African countryside and boasts the majestic Outeniqua Mountains as the perfect backdrop. This Gary Player course has a unique feel to it and is a magnificent round of golf with some amazing wildlife and scenery to enjoy during your round if you can pull your eyes away from the course! There are no easy holes on the course and the rough is severe and penal, if you’re a high handicapper this may not be the best course for you but is one that you can aspire to play.

The K Club is widely considered to be one of the most opulent golf resorts in Ireland so it isn’t hard to see why we have added this to our list of golf courses that should be on your bucket list. The Palmer Ryder course at K Club is a stern test of golf at 7,337 yards from the back tees. As you play your round here, you will have to take on many different challenges successfully in order to finish the round with a good scorecard. These challenges range from the vast number of water hazards to strategically placed bunkers and fast greens. This course should not be underestimated and even if you don’t score well, a trip to The K Club is a brilliant one with first-class service and facilities as well as a course with a fantastic layout and stunning views. There are some very intimidating holes which you must tackle carefully including the 16th which is a very long par-5 at just under 600 yards from the blue tees and boasts a double dogleg where you must navigate your ball around the water and bunkers as well as many trees before you get to approach the green which is protected on two sides by the River Laffey and is difficult to reach successfully. This is a brilliant course with some unique and interesting holes as well as a lovely clubhouse to enjoy a drink and meal in after.

Last, but certainly not least, is Real Club Valderrama which has hosted many championship golfing events since its opening and has justifiably been ranked as the number one course in Europe. It is always in immaculate condition and boasts a great design but is one that challenges even the best of golfers with many tight holes and hazards to navigate your way around. The closing holes are always described as being very tough but if you choose your tee option wisely then you should be able to get a fairly good scorecard. Although the green fee is a little expensive here, it is more than worth the money to get the chance to play on this world-renowned course.

We hope that you have taken a note of the courses you would be most interested in adding to your golfing bucket list and that you consider booking a golf break to one of them and the fantastic hotels that are nearby to these brilliant courses…

GOLF IN FRANCE

The varying regions of France provide a rich and interesting choice of golfing destinations. From the tempting vineyards of the South West region to the quiet, hidden gems of Northern France and Pas de Calais, the French golfing experience is simply one not to be overlooked.

Best Courses

Whilst Northern France is often overlooked by tourists in search of sun, sea and coast typical of the Southern coastline, this region has much to offer in terms of history, culture and a never-ending stretch of vineyards. But there’s also the fairytale allure of the South West and its hundreds of French chateaux, making it an impossible choice between the regions. Here are some of our favourites, by region.

REGION: North of France

  • Le Touquet La Mer, Pas de Calais – Designed by the legendary Harry Colt, this respected golf course dates back to the 30s and has been cited by many as an architectural wonder. To this day, the course remains a treasured favourite for serious golfers and its spiritual setting amongst the French sand dunes, makes it completely unique. With the challenge of coastal winds and firm, fast greens, this course is nothing short of stimulating.
  • Belle Dune, Pas de Calais – the Belle Dune course is ranked by many as one of the best courses across Europe. This traditional links style course sits within the Marquenterre reserve and the area is adorned by the most stunning natural fauna and flora. Much like Le Touquet La Mer, the intense coastal winds promise a challenging and exciting round any time of year.

REGION: South West France

  • Lourdes Golf Club – with a beautiful lakeside setting amidst the movingly tranquil conifers of the South, this hilly golf course provides a satisfying round for golfers of all handicaps. With its variable, mountainous terrain, the course delivers a great workout or for a more relaxing game, golfers can hire a buggy.
  • Pau Golf Club – dating all the way back to the 1850s, this Par 69 golf course if the oldest one in Europe. For anyone visiting South West France, we would definitely recommend this course.

Best Hotels

For something of a grand affair, Hotel Westminster in Côte d’Opale is the perfect French seaside resort, and with a strong relationship with Le Touquet golf course, your stay will truly be seamless. Built in the 1930s, visitors can enjoy the art deco charm of the hotel and with its exceptional NUXE Spa, it’s the perfect base for a luxury family holiday.

If you’re looking for a hotel close to Belle Dune, the gracefully charming Hotel La Terrasse makes a great base for the seaside (20 metres away), the enchanting town centre of Fort Mahon Plage, and various golf courses in the area.

When to Go

Northern France is affected by cold winters and hot summers, an oceanic climate which can be temperamental. The best time to travel is during the summer months but generally, this is peak season for tourism. So if you prefer avoiding the hustle and bustle, try visiting during May/early June or late August/early September.

South West France benefits from a Mediterranean climate and is warm all year round and there’s plenty to do any time you decide to visit.

REGION: Catalonia

  • El Prat, Barcelona – nine times’ host to the Spanish Open, Real Club de Golf El Prat celebrates 100 years of club history and is managed meticulously to withhold its status as the most important golf club in Spain. REGION: Costa Brava

  • PGA Catalunya Stadium Course – cited as one of Europe’s top 50 courses, the Stadium Course at PGA Catalunya has seen rising success since hosting the 2000 Spanish Open. This extensive and hilly course is tough but less advanced golfers can take ease from the five sets of tees; a flexible game for all abilities.

REGION: Madrid

  • Club De Campo – with more than 10,000 members, this is Madrid’s biggest sports club. Hosting eight Spanish Opens and other major golf championships, Club De Campo is a must-visit destination for avid golfers.

Best Hotels

Stay in the 5* star Rey Juan Carlos Hotel for access to golf courses such as El Prat, Terramar, Llavaneres, or Club de Golf Barcelona; a boundless span of clubs to keep you occupied all week. Also a short walk to the Avenida Diagonal shopping zone and the energetic La Rambla.

For Madrid’s Club De Campo, there is no other establishment quite as ornate as ME Madrid Reina Victoria, with the grand and extravagant building dating back to 1919. Or for a more boutique experience at a great price, stay at the Petit Palace Puerta del Sol and enjoy free bicycle rental for reconnoitring the artistic city of Madrid.

When to Go

Barcelona is warm and humid in the summer, with high tourist traffic. Late spring is a great time to visit as the weather is pleasingly mild whilst still being outside of peak season.

Madrid is one of the liveliest cities in Europe, with a hypnotic energy that runs through the veins of the community, making it an exciting holiday destination at any time of year. But bear in the extreme weather; the Spanish have summed it up on one sentence, “Nueve meses de invierno y tres de infierno”, meaning “Nine months of winter and three months of hell.” So be prepared for sizzling summer heat.
