This week’s blog is a guide to seven of the best winter sun packages we offer. For all those suffering from a severe case of the winter blues, there is light at the end of the tunnel now. There is no need to wait around for spring to pass to enjoy a good round of golf, as we have seven fantastic winter sun packages to cure even the worst cases of the winter blues. Available for January 2020, these golf packages offer everything any golfer could possibly want for an unforgettable golf escape; excellent golf courses, luxury hotels and resorts, and of course, a warm climate.

First up is the five-star Salobre Hotel Resort and Serenity, home to two of Gran Canaria’s most sought-after golf courses, the Salobre Golf Old and the Salobre Golf New golf courses. The Canary Islands are known for their mild climate throughout the year, making them an ideal destination for your next winter golf holiday. Gran Canaria’s temperature for January averages out at approximately 21 degrees Celsius, so it is the perfect time to take the opportunity to stay and challenge some of its best golf courses. At the Salobre Hotel Resort and Serenity, guests can enjoy an idyllic golfing getaway set back away from all of the hustle and bustle of the popular resorts. The resort blends beautifully into its natural surroundings with an abundance of palm trees and cacti to match the terrain of the neighbouring rolling landscape. The resort is home to an impressive seven outdoor swimming pools, as well as a huge spa complex so golfers can well and truly relax after a great round of golf. The Salobre Hotel Resort and Serenity is a five-star resort in every aspect, and its golf courses are no exception. Guests here are never far away from a fantastic round of golf with two excellent golf courses on-site at the resort, both the Salobre Old and the Salobre New golf courses. Out of the pair, the Salobre New is known to offer the best views, as its architect, Ron Kirby, was so intent on creating a golf course that perfectly showcases Gran Canaria’s natural beauty. Alternatively, the Old Course is more challenging with tight greens and deceivingly generous fairways ready to trip even the most experienced of players up.

Another great option for your next January golf break is the Elba Carlota, also situated in the Canary Islands in Fuerteventura. Just like Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura also boasts a warm climate throughout the winter, meaning it is also a strong contender to help any golfer beat the winter blues. The Elba Carlota offers an all-inclusive accommodation option, the perfect option for all those looking to indulge without having to worry about the bill at the end of their stay. Here, guests are in the ideal position to make the most out of both Fuerteventura’s amazing golf courses and its stunning beaches as the resort is situated just next door to the Fuerteventura Golf Club and the Caleta de Fuste beach. The Fuerteventura Golf Club is undoubtedly a must-play golf course, and conveniently for guests at the Elba Carlota, this fantastic golf course is just a stone’s throw away. This golf course is known for its wide and open greens, allowing its players to fully appreciate the beautiful views of the neighbouring Atlantic Ocean. The Elba Carlota is not just a great option for your next winter golfing getaway due to its beach location and fantastic golf; the hotel itself is superb with a great range of leisure facilities and spacious guest rooms. There is a casino located within the resort, as well as two outdoor swimming pools, and a wide range of sporting activities including tennis and golf. The resort is also home to two great restaurants for guests to make the most out of the all-inclusive accommodation option, but if guests ever feel like venturing outside of the resort, then there are plenty of other bars and restaurants located just a short walk away.

A consistent favourite amongst golfers for an unbeatably luxurious golf holiday is the Ritz-Carlton, Abama. Here, guests can enjoy the best of both worlds set back from all the noise and foot traffic found in the busy resorts in Tenerife, so they can make the most out of the warm weather and fantastic golf. For impeccable service, excellent leisure facilities and a stunning coastal location, the Ritz-Carlton, Abama is a perfect choice. On the doorstep of this fantastic resort is the Abama golf course, designed by the world-famous golf architect Dave Thomas. This golf course has repeatedly been labelled the ‘Augusta of Europe’, so it comes as no surprise that the Abama is one of the most played golf courses in Tenerife. With beautiful landscapes, a unique layout and a stern test of golf, the Abama is truly a must-play golf course for your next winter golf escape to Tenerife. With its huge guest rooms and fantastic leisure facilities, the Ritz-Carlton, Abama is certainly deserving of its reputation. The accommodation options here vary, with a range of suites, guest rooms and villas set around the resort, all of which include all of the modern necessities to ensure that all guests have a great stay. On their non-golfing days, guests can make the most out of the five-star facilities here, including a tennis academy and an impressive seven swimming pools. Admittedly, the Ritz-Carlton, Abama is set back a fair distance out the way from all of the major towns and areas in Tenerife, but the resort has everything and more to ensure guests have a fantastic golf break.

The Canary Islands is not the only golf destination that promises a great winter golf break; Dubai is also a great choice with its guaranteed warm weather and luxury hotels. The Zabeel House Greens by Jumeirah is a great four-star hotel that offers great value. This hotel is perfectly positioned for guests to make the most out of the world-class golf courses that Dubai is known so well for. In January, Dubai’s temperature averages out at approximately 24 degrees Celsius, so when guests are taking a break from challenging the fairways at one of the many golf courses on offer, they can also catch a tan. The hotel is set just a few kilometres away from the beach, and the hotel offers a complimentary regular shuttle service for guests. Furthermore, right on the doorstep of the hotel is a huge range of bars, restaurants and clubs to suit every budget and preference. At the Zabeel House, guests are not just in an ideal position to make the most out of all that Dubai has to offer; they are also just a stone’s throw away from some of the best golf courses in the emirate. Included in our January packages for the Zabeel House Greens is the Trump International Golf Club Dubai, the famous Montgomerie golf course, as well as the Els Club and the Dubai Hills Golf Club. Aside from its great location and range of golf on its doorstep, the Zabeel House Greens by Jumeirah is also a fantastic choice for a January golfing getaway with its spacious guest rooms, all of which come with a private balcony or terrace with panoramic views across downtown Dubai.

Yet another fantastic package offer for a golf holiday with some well-deserved winter sun is the Fancourt Hotel, a luxury five-star golf hotel in the Western Cape in South Africa. With two golf courses on-site, the Montagu and the Outeniqua, guests are never far away from an unforgettable round of golf. Both the Montagu and the Outeniqua golf courses were designed by the world-famous golf architect Gary Player, so all golfers must anticipate a challenging and a fantastic round of golf. The Fancourt Outeniqua has been ranked 14th in the country by Golf Digest, and it is definitely worthy of its reputation with beautiful views of the neighbouring Outeniqua mountains and its unique layout. Alternatively, the Fancourt Montagu has been ranked number 8, and it is generally considered to be the more challenging of the pair. Situated in the heart of the Western Cape, whether guests are on their round of golf or lounging around one of the hotel’s four swimming pools, they can enjoy beautiful views of the surrounding areas. The Fancourt Hotel is the perfect option for a relaxing golf break to start the year off right; the hotel has just 115 guest rooms, so guests can enjoy a low-key and quiet stay. Due to the Fancourt Hotel’s fantastic location in the heart of the Western Cape, golf is not the only item available on their holiday itinerary; the Fancourt Hotel is also placed on the Garden Route, home to some of South Africa’s most captivating natural sites, including the Knysna Waterfront.

If you are really looking to treat yourself for your winter golf break, then the Westin Abu Dhabi Golf Resort and Spa is the perfect place for you with impeccable service, modern guest rooms and a fantastic range of leisure facilities. To make the most out of the winter sun, guests can head to the Corniche beach to catch some rays. The Corniche beach is conveniently located just a twenty-minute drive away from the hotel. Another option for guests on their non-golfing days includes the world-famous Yas Marina Circuit which hosts the Grand Prix. Alternatively, guests can stay local and enjoy the resort’s excellent leisure facilities that earnt the resort its five-star status. All guests have complimentary access to the luxury Saadiyat Beach Club located on Saadiyat Island, and to unwind, guests can head to the resort’s wellness centre for a well-deserved treatment or massage. Included in the packages for the Westin Abu Dhabi Golf Resort is the National golf course located at the Abu Dhabi Golf Club and the Saadiyat Beach Golf Club. The Abu Dhabi Golf Club has earnt itself a world-class reputation, and to prove its high standard and quality, the golf course regularly hosts the HSBC Golf Championship, the largest sporting event in Abu Dhabi. Alternatively, the Saadiyat Beach Golf Club, designed by the world-famous golf architect Gary Player, offers some truly stunning views across the Saadiyat Island with its clear blue sea and white beaches.

Last but not least is the Moon Palace Cancun, a fantastic option for an all-inclusive golf holiday. The Moon Palace Cancun has the perfect location for guests to make the most out of the winter sun as it is positioned directly on a stunning white sandy beach that Cancun is known so well for. Furthermore, with an impressive fifteen restaurants and twelve bars, there is no better resort to offer an all-inclusive option. No matter what guests are feeling for dinner, there will always be something to accommodate them. The restaurants and bars are not the only features at the Moon Palace Cancun that comes in abundance; the resort is home to five swimming pools, so guests will never find themselves short of places to catch the tan if they do not feel like heading to the beach. With such a fantastic range of leisure facilities, a beach location and a huge selection of bars and restaurants, guests have everything they need and more for an unforgettable golf escape. When the golfers can manage to peel themselves off the sunbed, they can head to the Moon Palace Golf Course for a fantastic round of golf. Designed by Jack Nicklaus, the Moon Palace Golf Course is widely considered to be wholly responsible for the development of golf in Mexico, and it has certainly set the bar high. The twenty-seven-hole golf course is a lengthy challenge as it measures out to seven thousand yards, so players must be sure to pace themselves. However, while the Moon Palace Golf Course is undeniably long, all players can enjoy a leisurely round here as all abilities are accommodated for.

This week’s blog is a guide to nine tricky golf courses for those who like a challenge. It is fair to say that golfers often do not tend to go after the easy option; they would much rather seize the opportunity to show off to their fellow players. Here, we have hand-picked some of the most challenging golf courses in Europe. All nine of these fantastic golf courses offer a stern test of golf that can be best appreciated by players that like to be kept on their toes, and those that ultimately search for an invigorating challenge.

The Espiche Golf Lagos is a hidden gem in the Algarve, one of the most popular golfing destinations in Europe. Players must navigate around the 18 holes here, through a unique layout with a challenge characterised by the strategic placement of greenery and fauna. While the fairways may appear to be on the generous side, with dense forestry lining the edges and subtle contouring, golfers are guaranteed an unforgettable test of golf. This par 72 golf course has been designed to incorporate most of the landscape’s natural features, which in turn creates a stunning landscape, and of course a fantastic challenge. Not only must golfers anticipate masses of greenery and fauna to manoeuvre their shots around; the layout is also rife with bunkers and water features that run their natural course throughout the course. Despite the Espiche Golf Lagos being a relatively new golf course in the Western Algarve, it has already established itself as one of the most challenging and unique golf courses in the area. With this layout, players will find they will succeed more in course management if they prioritise accuracy over the length of their shots. There are some truly tricky tight spots throughout, therefore the general line of advice for those that want to attempt the Espiche Golf Lagos is to take plenty of spare balls! Golfers must anticipate the challenge at the par-4 3rd hole as it is widely considered to be the most difficult on the course with a 409-metre-long uphill fairway. Whilst the fairway here appears to be generously wide, the subtle undulations are sure to trip up even the most experienced player.

The Dolce Campo Real Lisboa golf course is situated just half an hour’s drive away from the centre of Lisbon. Here, golfers can enjoy an invigorating round of golf across a unique terrain with rolling hills and valleys. The challenge does not end here; not only is the landscape truly unique with consistent elevation changes, but there are also dense areas of greenery and forestry throughout. Golfers must play with the perfect balance of accuracy and length in order to manoeuvre their shot across the many water hazards and some tricky doglegs which demand a blind shot. Even the most skilled players will find every element of their game challenged at the Dolce CampoReal Lisboa as they must overcome the natural terrain of the original landscape. Donald Steel, one of the most famous golf architects in the world, has created a fantastic golf course built on the natural beauty of the former terrain. The golf course that stands today is rife with the original landscape’s features, including the natural greenery and fauna weaving in and out of the stunning valleys and hills. Players are wrong for assuming they have an advantage with an anticipated view from the elevated tees; the greens are subtly undulating, creating a surprising challenge.

The Shire is widely considered to be among some of the best golf courses in the UK, as well as one of the most challenging. Designed by the leading golf architect Seve Ballesteros, the Shire golf course is guaranteed to keep golfers on their toes throughout their game. Players can enjoy a fantastically varied round of golf; at this golf course, no hole is even remotely similar. The golf course comprises of six par threes, six par fours and six par fives, all of which offer a unique layout and a stern test of golf. Long hitters will feel right at home here as their skills will be utilised best with the challenge to overcome the many large water hazards. They can reap the benefits of the risk-reward system at this golf course, and those that cannot rise to the challenge will be penalised. The challenge here does not just end at the strategic placement of the water hazards and the sheer size of them; there are over 10,000 trees at this parkland golf course just waiting to swallow any wayward shots. Furthermore, the greens are unbeatably fast and feature subtle contours to trip up even the most skilled golfer.

The Salobre New, formerly known as the Salobre North, is a distinctive golf course that is guaranteed to set the hearts racing of all players, regardless of their skill set or experience. This golf course offers a unique round of golf to its players with an original landscape that is sure to be remembered for years to come. Despite the fact that this par 69 golf course is not nearly as long as its sister golf course, the Salobre Old, nor the other golf courses in the surrounding area, that is not to say that golfers will find a round of golf here a walk in the park. The Salobre New was designed with the emphasis on the use of accuracy instead of length, meaning golfers must be sure to play with their A-game throughout their round. Despite only opening in 2008 as a new addition to the huge variety of golf in Gran Canaria, the Salobre New has already created a steady reputation for itself as one of the most challenging golf courses on the island. A highlight of the stern test of golf on offer at the Salobre New includes the par-4 10th hole where players must utilise the use of their iron in order to cross an undulating fairway to reach the multi-tiered green.

One of the most unique golf courses in the Algarve includes the Monte Rei, which has accurately been labelled as “the jewel in the crown of Portuguese golf”. Conveniently for players, the Monte Rei is home to a peaceful and tranquil atmosphere to soothe any tempers raised from the challenging layout they have to overcome. Designed by Jack Nicklaus, one of the most famous golf architects in history, at the Monte Rei, golfers are guaranteed to have an unforgettable round of golf. Despite the huge range of golf in the Algarve and its constant expansion, the Monte Rei has continued to maintain a big name for itself in Europe. The main challenge here is characterised by the nature and placement of water hazards and bunkers; in order to maintain a steady scorecard, golfers must play with the perfect balance of length and accuracy across the 7,224-yard-long layout. Nicklaus certainly did not hold back in the use of water hazards for this layout, as they feature in eleven out of the eighteen holes here. The challenge does not simply end here; with original fauna and greenery, strategic bunkering and undulating terrain, the Monte Rei is not a good golf course for players to choose if they want to show off to their fellow players.

The par 73 Alferini golf course is a stand-out course in the midst of all the classic Spanish layouts in the Costa del Sol. Instead of just providing an attractive layout and a pretty scenery, the architect of the Alferini, Antonio Garcia Garrido, has succeeded in striving to create a fantastic golf course that offers a great challenge. Many of the golf courses in the Costa del Sol are typically attractive, and some might say they lack a certain edge to them. However, the Alferini puts this preconception to waste with a truly unique layout that is sure to provide a stern test of golf to all those that attempt it. The golf course was designed and created with its natural features in mind in order to preserve its original beauty and to maintain the landscape’s unique features. The par 5 16th hole is a particular stand-out to all of its players. At this hole, long hitters may initially revel in the lengthy and seemingly straightforward fairway. However, as any experienced golfer can advise – looks can often be deceiving! As the fairway approaches the green, it narrows significantly, therefore the element of accuracy must be focused in on as players soon find themselves surrounded by bunkers. With a unique layout that is sure to make low handicappers break a sweat, it comes as no surprise that Michael Campbell has labelled this hole as his favourite across the entire golf course.

The Le Golf National Albatros is known as the most challenging golf course in the surrounding areas around the French capital, therefore it hardly comes as surprising that it was selected as the 2018 Ryder Cup venue. It is fair to say that this golf course has lived up to each and every one of its expectations, and this has been shown to be the case as players return year after year. Golfers push their skills to their limit to make the most out of the risk-reward system the golf course operates on. Golfers are thrown into the challenge here from the get-go; however, the real challenge lies right at the end of the round at the par 4 18th hole. This is the hole to make or break an unforgettable round of golf with a huge water hazard positioned to the left side of the fairway and areas of dense bunkering on the right side. Here, the determinant of success lies in the approach shot. Whether players are happy with the end result or not, their round at the Le Golf National Albatros is sure to be a memorable one.

The La Manga Club West is the perfect golf course for any golfer looking for a challenging yet varied round of golf. The front and the back loops of nine differ in both their characteristics and the skills that they demand. The front nine holes demand golfers play with precise accuracy, and while the back nine appear to be more open, any decent player knows never to take anything at face value. The back nine might comprise of a more open layout in comparison to the narrow and compact front nine, however that is not to say that they are any less challenging. Golfers will find themselves thrown into the challenge from the very first hole, and they must do their best to play consistently as the course rapidly changes in elevation. If players are able to focus on anything but the challenge at hand, they should take their time to appreciate the immaculately kept landscape here; spectators frequently comment on the fantastic condition of the West golf course. At the La Manga West, the best is saved until last at the final 18th hole. Here, golfers must push themselves for one last time in order to give a half-decent tee shot. If they cannot do this, then there is usually some leeway due to the width of the fairway, but golfers should not count on this.

At the Acaya Golf Club, the challenge lies in the difficulty of club selection. If players can manage this, then they have a chance to do well here. There is a huge range of challenges to be met at the Acaya Golf Club, therefore golfers must choose their club carefully. Players must overcome strategically placed bunkers and water hazards that come into play at many of the holes here in order to score well. Whilst the Acaya Golf Club is undeniably one of the most challenging golf courses in Italy, it is also one of the most breath-taking due to its stunning location in the heart of the countryside. The architects of the Acaya Golf Club sought to incorporate the features of the natural landscape with their vision to create a fantastic golf course that forces players to use all of the clubs in their arsenal. It is certainly a unique aim to want to encourage players to use all fourteen of their clubs, however it is fair to say that this has been achieved, and it simply adds to the challenge. With three huge lakes and dense green areas consisting of olive groves, players must anticipate a testing round of golf that they are sure not to forget any time soon. The main challenge here is characterised by water hazards as the three lakes at the golf course come into play mainly in the back nine holes. The 16th, 17th and 18th holes comprise of tricky par fours; therefore, players must be sure to save the best of their game until last.

We hope that you have enjoyed this week’s blog, and hopefully, we have inspired you to push beyond your boundaries to truly test your golfing skills on your next golf holiday in Europe.

To keep your Golf Escape under the budget you desire can sometimes be a tricky job for the tour leader. Of course, everyone wants to play the best courses and stay in the nicest hotels possible, but often, it cannot be done for the set budget. If you can be flexible with your dates, then there are always some little periods in the year where there is a deal to be had. So here are our top tips of when to stay and play at certain hotels and courses for the 2019/20 season.

Our first visit is to Las Colinas golf course on the border of the Costa Blanca and Murcia regions. Voted Spain’s best course 3 years in a row at the World Golf Awards, this is one that should be on everyone’s list to play. Littered with bunkers and huge water hazards, it is a course that is very pleasant on the eye. With little else around the course too, it is a peaceful experience, which helps as you work your way around this challenging course. But when should you play it? September. Las Colinas class September as their ‘low season’, even though it is a lot of regions most popular month for golfers. They cut the prices by 25% and makes one of Europe’s best courses a very affordable round of golf. Coming in at below £80 per person with a buggy included too, you have to include it in your itinerary for anybody staying from La Manga right up to Benidorm. It is well worth the journey.

The next stop off is in the Eastern Algarve and we are going to talk luxury. Not just luxury accommodation, but a golf course to match it too. Monte Rei Golf & Country Club is one of Portugals finest golf resorts, perhaps even the best. Its huge Villas are traditional in design with modern touches throughout, making it the perfect place to relax before tackling the demanding
course on site. The Nicklaus course of Monte Rei is a Golf Escapes favourite and has to be considered a bucket list course that competes with some of the best courses in the world. Perfectly maintained all year, stunning surroundings and a level of service you can’t imagine is why this course is so superior to many others. Sounds expensive right? For a resort this good, it is worth paying for, but in the prime golfing period between 01st – 14th March, You could do 3 nights and 2 rounds (with buggies and range balls) from £359 per person! So, I bet we can guess where you will be going next March!

The Canary Islands. Known for its steady warm temperatures all year round, making it a fantastic winter golf destination where you can get away from the rain, wind and snow in the UK for some golf in the sun. The golf courses know this though and for that reason, their high seasons are from October through to April. So why don’t we go there in May or September? Same weather, same golf courses, but a fraction of the price. For example, Costa Adeje Golf in Tenerife. If you were to play this course on the 1 st of May or September, compared to the 1 st of November or February you would save over £35 per round!

The same for Salobre Old Course in Gran Canaria. You would save over £25 per round at this golf course. These are just two examples, but similar savings are to be had at all courses in Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura during the ‘summer’ months. It seems strange to think things would be cheaper at these times of the year, but it really is the case, we promise.

When you think of a good time of year to play golf abroad, most people would say April, May September give you the full package. Sun, but not too hot and also not paying the high hotel prices that June, July and August bring. Nestled right in the centre of Paphos new town is the Dionysos Hotel, this property offers an unbelievable price in April. Peak golf season and with average temperatures 21°, this has to be the perfect opportunity to visit such a fantastic golf destination. The 3-star hotel in a perfect location is £20 per person, per night cheaper in April that it is in September! This hotel paired with the fabulous courses the island has to offer such as Aphrodite Hills, Secret Valley, Elea and Minthis makes for the perfect golfing getaway for couples and groups alike. They very much look forward to welcoming you in the most wonderful Cypriot manor.

Next is an option for groups on a budget. Mar Menor Golf Resort in Murcia is a resort that continues to baffle everyone here at Golf Escapes, but for all the right reasons. The resort has a 5-star hotel, 4-star apartments, a good selection of bars and restaurants and a lovely Jack Nicklaus golf course all within a stone’s throw of each other. Yet the apartments, known as ‘The Residences at Mar Menor’ is one of the cheapest and best value packages available in Europe. The resort is cheap all year
round, but to make it even better, they class the golfing peak season of May as their ‘low season’. So let’s talk numbers. 3 nights 2 rounds from £159 & 7 nights 4 rounds from £309 in May, yes May! Not only is there a great course on-site, but there are also 6 other courses that you can play for no extra cost and use the free shuttle bus provided by the resort to take you there too. We hope to see you there in May, because we will be there.

Praia D’el Rey. I am sure most of you have heard of the resort north of Lisbon and most would think of it as a prestigious golf course. That’s because it is. It has recently had a rather good addition to the resort too. West Cliffs golf course opened 18 months ago and has quickly become one of the most sought- after courses in the country. These two courses mixed with Royal Obidos and Bom Sucesso (all within 15 minutes of each other) makes for one of the best selections of courses to play in Europe.
Back to the question of when to visit though… To be honest, we’ve cheated with this one. Go at any time. Any time from April until June and from September until the end of October is when we would recommend though. It can be a bit chillier here in the lower seasons, so nice to wait until the weather warms up, but when it does, it is a place of stunning natural beauty. Prices at either the 5 star Marriot Praia D’el Rey Hotel or the Praia D’el Rey Village (apartments and villas) are fantastic value for money during these periods. It is another resort that is hard to understand why it is so cheap considering the quality of golf courses. With 4 nights and 3 rounds staying in the village starting from £245 this package would be at least double the price if the resort was based in the Algarve. Golf Escapes really can’t applaud this resort highly enough as it is a truly unbelievable destination for the keenest of golfers.

Last but certainly not least… The Conrad Algarve. Voted in the top 5 hotels in the Algarve on TripAdvisor, a Michelin Star restaurant and awards under its belt such as having the best spa and the best hotel suite in Europe. The hotel is situated in the perfect location of the classy town, Quinta do Lago. Opposite bars and restaurants and 3 world class golf courses (Quinta do Lago North, South & Laranjal) within 5 minutes, this hotel has everything to offer. The hotel is luxury in every sense of the
word and is one of the most expensive hotels in the Algarve and rightly so. It is quite simply outstanding. Of course, though, it wouldn’t be in this article if it didn’t have a sneaky period where it becomes a place where anybody can visit. This period is from the beginning of March until the beginning of April, the perfect time of the year for golfers. It is literally half the price in March
compared to June & September. A Golf Escape of pure quality throughout is very possible and more than affordable in the month of March and if you wanted to treat yourself next year, get it booked sooner rather than later for even further discounts.
We hope this might have helped plan your holiday for this year and next. Be as flexible as possible with your dates and you never know what deals might just be a few days away from the dates you were first thinking.
