Golf Educational to South Africa

April 2017

In January I was invited to join a small party on a golf focused educational trip touring the southern-most coast of Africa from Cape Town via the Garden Route to Port Elizabeth. The invitation was accepted for mid-April.  My first visit to Cape Town in (too) many years and my first as a pretty average 18 handicapper.

Since there is such a wide variety of carriers that service this route I began, as all should do, by looking at my flight options, i.e. routing, timings, and costs. The only carrier that flies direct into Cape Town direct – and they know it, are British Airways from Heathrow; their fair came in at just shy of £1,000.  Convenient – yes, expensive – most certainly. So indirect it was and since I live near Gatwick my next thought was Emirates via Dubai. Bingo! The timings were great, with good connections, and the fare…just £445, and they allow you to take 30kgs of checked luggage in two bags; so my golf clubs could come with me. Why so much BA? And why only 23kg of checked luggage?

The flight out was on one of Emirates new A380’s, a really comfortable plane and great in-flight entertainment. Food – the usual. The flight from Dubai to Cape Town was on an A320, so not as good as the A380, but as I slept most of the way – it did its job and arrived on time.

Cape Town International was rebuilt for the 2010 Football World Cup and is a friendly easy-to-navigate point of arrival.

Day 1

I was met by the Adam, the MD of Gilt Edge – the arrangers of the trip – and taken to my overnight hotel – the Cape Milner; a contemporary boutique hotel in the quiet suburb of Tamboerskloof, just to the south-east of Signal Hill and a 10 minute drive to the V&A Waterfront. The room was large and well equipped with a great en-suite behind glass walls.

After a quick shower and a quick beer (obligatory), we drove to the V&A and met up with my host (Warren) and the other participants on the trip. Certainly an eclectic mix, one Czech, one Dutch, a
Finn and me. They would turn out to be superb company and to each bring something different to the group. A lovely fish supper was had in heart of the Waterfront, which has seen a massive amount of development and is now a vibrant place with a real ‘buzz’ about it.

Day 2

After breakfast, our itinerary showed a surprise activity for half an hour; it had to be Table Mountain – didn’t it? How wrong was I, as we pulled up outside the reception area for NAC Helicopters. What a way to start the trip – a 15 minute flight to view the City from the clear blue skies. It’s a great way to get to understand the layout of Cape Town, the views are spectacular and it’s not that expensive. NAC Helicopters also offer 30 minute and 1 hour excursions in 3, 4 and 6 seater aircraft.

It was time to leave central Cape Town for our first round of golf (one of six on the trip) at Steenberg Golf Club in Tokai at the back end of Table Mountain and the Twelve Apostles. The course is located on the Steenberg Estate, which has a long and esteemed history and now offers stylish accommodation in Cape Dutch style white washed and thatched buildings in the grounds of the old Manor House, all set within one of the oldest vineyard in South Africa. And yes their Merlot is awesome!

The course is within a parkland setting and despite the South Africans love of bunkers, it’s a playable course for most handicaps and great way to settle yourself into a golf holiday in South Africa, before you take on the challenge of the tougher courses you’ll experience. I managed to avoid a bunker until the 16th and water until the 18th. The odd par here and there and I sat in the clubhouse with a glass in hand feeling happy with my first outing.

Our overnight accommodation was at the Steenberg Hotel & Spa, a classically stylish property located between the course and the winery. We ate in the stylish and elegant the Catharina’s Restaurant in the old barn – the service was exemplary and the food exquisite.

Day 3

Another beautiful day dawned and following a Cape Malay omelette and strong coffee, we headed first up to the winery, where you can a have a tour, a sundowner or a full meal overlooking the vines and the mountains beyond before driving down to the district of Newlands situated at the back of Table Mountain where we visited the Vineyard Hotel. Set in 7 acres of parkland the hotel offers 208 en-suite bedrooms in a variety of grades of rooms, suites and cottages. Its location is ideal for those who want to stay neither in the heart of Cape Town nor in the winelands, yet close to both. Excellent coffee as well.

Leaving Cape Town behind us we drove towards the winelands town of Paarl and to Pearl Valley, home to Jack Nicklaus’s Championship Signature Course. Unlike my round at Steenberg, I found a bunker off the first tee and many more on my way round. Actually, it may have taken me until the 17th before I didn’t hit sand somewhere on each hole.  It just seemed as if Jack knew where my ball was going to land and put a bunker there for me!

The accommodation at Pearl Valley is not yet officially open but is of a high standard and consists of self-catering suites set in small blocks of 8 rooms just behind the practice green. If you do not want to self-cater, the clubhouse offers a range of meals, but a full service restaurant it is not.

Day 4

The sun was again in full attendance as we hit the road again leaving Cape Town behind us as we drove to the quaint wine-lands village of Franschoek (‘French Corner’). The village (it’s really a little too small to call it a town) is nestled between hills on three sides giving it an Alpine feel, and consists of a few top quality properties (e.g. Le Quartier Francais and Leeu House) and some beautiful vineyards. It’s ideal if you’d like a Cape winelands experience without the masses…for a few days…

From there we crossed over a mountain pass, with a magnificent view back over Franschoek and its vineyards, and dropped down (eventually) onto the N2, which runs along the length of the south coast through George, Knysna and Port Elizabeth before turning north along the Indian Ocean coast of KwaZulu Natal passing Durban. It eventually runs out of tarmac at near Johannesburg; a distance of some 1,400. It’s quite some road.

Our next stop was game reserve on the outskirts of Mossel Bay called Gondwana. Having travelled widely on safari in Southern Africa I was a little concerned that the experience would fall far short of my previous experiences.  How wrong I was to be proved…

We had barely cleared the two wildlife security gates for the short drive to the Kwena Lodge, when we spotted some shapes just below the crest of a hill some 1,000 yards away. The call went up ‘ellies’ but they were too small and not moving like elephants. Rhino? We got closer, yes five white rhino were ambling gently down the track towards us. Warren wisely pulled to the side of the road, turned off the engine and we sat as they walked up to the vehicle and then past us, almost within touching distance. A great introduction to Gondwana!

Our accommodation was a three bedroom house, a short distance from the main lodge – perfectly walkable but this is Africa so you don’t. Over the two game drives we came across elephants, rhino, a pride of lion and several different antelope species. The experience is a little ‘canned’ but in the context of the Garden Route golf & safari holiday, juts perfect for first-timers to Africa.

Day 5

Following our early morning game drive and yes, with the sun shining yet again, we bade farewell to Gondwana and drove the short distance down to Mossel Bay and Pinnacle Point Golf Club (Par72, 6,460 yarsd). Set on the edge of the cliffs, with the next landmass south being Antartica, I had identified the course as likely to be a challenge with seven holes teeing off alongside the cliffs or over the sea between the ‘pinncle’ of land jutting out to sea. Sadly, I was right. The course got into my head and a simple shot to a Par 3 became a nerve-racking shank into the ocean far below. So unnecessary!

The course is amazing and the 18th one of the best I have ever played. This course kept on giving right to the end. In my view, it’s a MUST play course when you’re in this part of the world.

From Pinnacle Point we had an hour’s drive to get to Herold’s Bay and Oubaai Hotel Golf & Spa for an overnight stay before playing the Ernie Els designed Oubaai course the next morning.

This week’s blog is the first part of two on the best destinations for your next couples golf break. Whether you are both golfers or not, these resorts are all ideal for your next golf break and each offer you something unique and interesting to provide you with the best holiday experience. Whether the trip is only for a long weekend or a full-blown two week holiday take a look at these resorts and we are sure that you wont’ be disappointed…

First up we have the four-star Doubletree by Hilton Acaya Golf Resort which is situated in Puglia, Italy and is just a 20 minute drive from the historical town of Lecce and only five minutes’ drive from the stunning Salento seaside. The rooms here are all elegantly decorated with all the amenities that you would expect from a hotel of this standard, the views from the rooms either overlook the gardens, the golf course or the Puglia countryside. For those of you that are more interested in relaxation than playing golf on the fantastic course here there is a wonderful spa area which includes a Turkish bath, a whirlpool and a sauna as well as a range of different treatments. There are also two outdoor swimming pools for you to enjoy and the hotel is situated just under two miles from the Cesine Nature Reserve where you can take long walks. The hotel boasts a range of different restaurants and bars, the fantastic regional dishes that are served are cooked by none other than a Michelin star chef. This is a beautiful hotel with everything that you could want for your next golf break away for two and with the golf course on-site here, even if only one of you is a keen golfer there is no travelling to be done away from the hotel!

Acaya Golf Club is a challenging course set in a beautiful location amongst Mediterranean vegetation, olive trees and maquis. There are many water hazards on this course, especially on the back nine, where five of the holes are routed around lakes! The challenges aren’t only limited to water-based hazards though, there are many strategically placed bunkers throughout the course which are lying in wait for any errant shots. Although this is a challenging course, at just over 6,100 yards, it is suitable for all golfers and boasts some incredible views of the Italian countryside so it is perfect for your next golf holiday!

Next up we have the five-star Hilton Vilamoura which boasts a fantastic location just a two-minutes’ free shuttle ride down to Vilamoura as well as being a short free shuttle ride from the fabulous Oceanico golf courses. This hotel is beautifully designed with contemporary rooms with private balconies, large swimming pools and stunning architecture. Being so close to Vilamoura means that you can enjoy walking around the marina in the evenings and try some of the fantastic restaurants there but if you prefer to dine at the hotel then you definitely will not be disappointed. There are three different restaurants for you to choose from with Mediterranean dishes being served at the Cilantro restaurant, international cuisine served on the terraced Moscada restaurant and grilled delicacies in Aquarela restaurant. If you haven’t taken a trip down to the marina then you will probably find yourself sipping on homemade cocktails and liqueurs at the Rubi bar. If you are not that into golfing then you can spend your days relaxing by the pools or in the spa and gym areas. This is an ideal destination for your next couples golf break to the Algarve and the golf is just as good as the hotel…

Oceanico boasts four stunning golf courses that you can get the chance to play and enjoy whilst staying at the Hilton Vilamoura. Each of them offer a different round of golf with new challenges and with four courses to choose from you definitely won’t be bored here! Pinhal boasts spectacular, panoramic views over the sea as well as wide fairways and strategically placed bunkers lying in wait for you. Despite the fact that there are many water hazards as well as the bunkers and trees, this is a fair course and providing you play well, you should be able to match your handicap. Millennium is the most recent addition to the Oceanico courses, the first nine are set amongst pine trees which you have to be wary of and the back nine has larger greens and more hazards – this is a course on which you need to keep your cool! Laguna has a Links style feel about the course and when the wind is blowing this can be a hard course to score well on, especially with its many water and sand hazards. Despite this, it is the perfect holiday course as it is great for those with a higher handicap but still a challenge for the better golfer. Victoria is the longest course in Portugal but with five sets of tees, it can be played by even those golfers with a high handicap. This is a well-manicured, challenging course but definitely not one to miss out on.

Last, but not least, we have Hotel Thanos Almyra which is a stunning, five-star hotel in a great location, just five minutes’ walk to the beach and from Paphos Harbour. The rooms here are decorated with a contemporary theme and feature beautiful views of either the sea or the gardens. Spend your days relaxing by one of the four freshwater pools or on the fantastic Minthis Hills Golf Course. You can also enjoy relaxing in the spa where you can choose from a range of holistic treatments, relax in the sauna or workout in the gym. There are four restaurants at the hotel, where you can enjoy delicious local and traditional food or international dishes. Depending on the season, you can also dine alfresco on the terrace. Of course, being so close to Paphos Harbour you have many options for bars and restaurants and the opportunity to walk around the old town. This is a tranquil, beautiful hotel – perfect for a couples golf escape!

Minthis Hills can accommodate golfers of all abilities and it is a stunning course with its fairways lined with fruit trees and grapevines. The fairways are far from flat here, with many of them being uphill, downhill or sloped which means that you have to think carefully about where to place your next shot. Each hole is unique on this course and each is memorable for different reasons so you won’t get bored playing this course for certain. This is a great holiday course and one that is a perfect compliment to your stay at Hotel Thanos Almyra.

Last, but certainly not least, is Dingle Golf Club. The design of the course is simple yet impressive with the holes seemingly etched into the natural landscape but this doesn’t mean that is isn’t a challenging one. The course is dotted with strategically placed bunkers and the fairways are undulating which makes it a fair test of anyone’s golf. This course could be described as an authentic Irish Links course and is one that could be considered to be a real gem in the area – definitely not one to miss out on!Dingle-Golf-Club

In Dublin, Cassidy’s Hotel is a great little hotel set in the heart of the city. This hotel’s location could not be anymore perfect for a golf break in Dublin as it is within a ten minute walk of Dublin’s main attractions and there are two superb golf courses nearby for you to enjoy. The hotel is made up of three Georgian townhouses which have been converted to make this perfect, three-star boutique hotel. Of course, being in the centre of the city gives you the chance to experience Dublin in all its glory from the nightlife, to the culture and food available there. If you are wanting food right on your doorstep though, the hotel’s restaurant also serves delicious traditional Irish cuisine and the breakfast here is great! Cassidy’s Hotel is the ideal location for your next golf holiday to Dublin and so it isn’t surprising that it is the base for our Dublin tour…Cassidys-Hotel

Whilst staying at Cassidy’s, you get the chance to play two superb golf courses which are within close proximity of the hotel. Portmarnock Golf Course is situated on its own sandy peninsula and is stretched over 500 acres of land. This Links course provides players with stunning views of the Irish coastline and if you are lucky with the weather conditions you will be able to see the Mountains of Mourne to the North. With water on three sides of the course, you are certainly in trouble if the wind is harsh but even without the wind, the fast and undulating greens make this a challenging course, but definitely one to be admired.Portmarnock

The Island Golf Club is a fantastic Links course with some of the most interestingly designed holes you will ever get the opportunity to play. This course is a stern test of golf and like many of the courses here, if the wind is blowing those even with the lowest of handicaps will struggle to finish the round with a good scorecard. Although this course is a tough one with fast greens and narrow fairways, the scenery is simply breathtaking and even if you finish the round with an awful scorecard, you won’t regret this round of golf. This course manages to incorporate its stunning surroundings into the round, this a must-play course when you are staying in the Dublin area and so it is no surprise that this is the final addition to the Dublin tour.The-Island-Golf-Club

These are just two of the tours we have in Ireland and many are still being put together but there is always the option of creating your own bespoke tour with us and with somewhere as beautiful as Ireland, it would be hard to see why you would want to choose anywhere else for your golf break this Spring…Blog - feedspot

This week’s blog is an insight into the new UK golf tour packages that are currently being put together to give you the opportunity to stay in a fabulous hotel and  to play several golf courses nearby to get the most out of your golf break. With January finally over it is time to start planning for when the weather will get that bit better and you will get to go back to playing rounds of superb golf in the UK.  There is no better way to embrace the springtime weather and the courses that the UK has to offer you than by booking a tour…

Our Bournemouth tour offers you two nights at the stunning four-star Hallmark West Cliff which boasts an ideal location being just 10 minutes from the town centre and eight minutes from the beautiful beach. Whilst here, besides enjoying the fantastic golf that is on offer, you can enjoy the extensive leisure facilities from the heated pool and gym to the spa facility. Although use of the spa facility requires a small additional charge it is definitely worth it to get the full enjoyment and relaxation out of your golf break. Being such a short journey into the town centre you have unlimited dining and drinking options but the brasserie restaurant at the hotel is a fantastic option if your round on the golf course has taken it out of you! This is a lovely hotel and is no surprise that it is the base for the Bournemouth tour with its fantastic facilities and even better golfing options nearby…

Hallmark-West-Cliff

The Dudsbury Golf Club’s Championship course has been the venue for several prestigious golfing events such as the BMW PGA Order of Merit Championship and the PGA Europro Tour and if you want to see why this was the course picked then there is no better opportunity than this! The course is set in a beautiful location, amongst 160 acres of Dorset countryside which just makes the round here more enjoyable. There is no doubt that the 16th hole is a feature hole where you will have to show yourself to be a good driver in order to reach the green across two lakes! For after your round, the clubhouse is a fantastic place to sit and relax whilst enjoying more views of the Stour Valley and of course, a cold drink!

Dudsbury

The second course for this Bournemouth tour is the Championship course at Meyrick Park which is a demanding test of golf set amongst stunning Dorset countryside. It is an undulating parkland course with many challenges even for a golfer with the lowest handicap. The opening hole is a spectacular one where your driver is over a valley to the small green which is cut out of the hill. This is a great, challenging course which always seems to be in perfect condition and it is a fantastic addition to the Bournemouth tour.

Meyrick

Our second tour is the Kent Golf Coast tour where you are based at The Lodge at Princes Golf Club. The Lodge is the former clubhouse of Princes Golf Club and has been extensively renovated to provide guests with luxury accommodation and breathtaking views of the two great golf courses as well as across the Sandwich bay. The Brasserie restaurant is situated on the bay and provides a great dining experience for guests here with the use of local Kentish produce as well as an outdoor terrace to enjoy a cocktail or beer on after your meal! The Lodge is just over a 10-minutes’ drive into the medieval town of Sandwich where you can find great pubs, independent shops, art galleries and some historic churches. This is a fantastic and unique place to get the opportunity to stay and with the two golf courses so nearby it is not hard to see why this is a sure winner for your next golf break to the UK…

This is a long and challenging course at over 7200 yards but there are a few different tee positions from which those with higher handicaps can tee off from, making it less of a challenge and more of a holiday course!

Princes

The Royal St George’s Golf Club is considered to be one of the finest links courses in England and has been selected to be the venue for The Open Championship no less than 14 times. This course requires accuracy and concentration if you are to score even close to your handicap due to the many blind shots that you will be required to take and bunkers that you have to avoid! This is a fantastic course and although can be a challenge for golfers of all abilities, it has some very interesting holes and scenery – the 4th on the Himalayas loop will definitely not disappoint! To round off the Kent Coast tour this course is perfect.

Royal-St-Georges
