With spectacular golf, fantastic facilities and impeccable service, any one of these four-star hotels and resorts offer an unforgettable golf escape. As shown with these resorts and hotels; a four-star status does not necessarily mean that any of the value and luxury needs to be missed out on, as all of these offer the same standard as a five-star hotel for service, facilities, and most importantly, golf. For your next golf holiday, a four-star hotel is an unbeatable option; you get all the luxury and fantastic golf at a cheaper rate.

First up is the four-star Isla Canela Golf, a four-star hotel located in the heart of the Costa de la Luz Huelva. Just next door to the hotel lies the Isla Canela golf course, where golfers can enjoy a leisurely round of golf on a beautiful landscape, dotted with the terrain’s natural fauna and flora. The Isla Canela Golf is not just perfectly positioned to enjoy a great game of golf; the hotel is set in the countryside, but it is still in walking distance of a good selection of bars and restaurants, so guests are not completely isolated. For a wider selection of bars, restaurant and things to do, the Isla Canela Marina is just a few kilometres away, and the authentic Spanish town of Ayamonte is just a short drive away. The Isla Canela is a relatively small hotel with just 56 guest rooms, so with a quaint countryside location as well, guests can expect to have a truly relaxing golfing getaway. All of the guest rooms here have fantastic views spanning across the neighbouring Isla Canela golf course so that golfers know a great round of golf is never far away. For a lazy afternoon, guests can lounge around the outdoor pool area, then head to the hotel’s spa area for a session in the sauna. If guests choose to stay local for dinner, then they can either choose from the Thebussem Restaurant for a classic Mediterranean meal, or the hotel’s café which serves a range of tapas.

Yet another unbeatable four-star golf resort in the south of Spain includes the La Cala Golf Resort, set in the rolling countryside surrounding Mijas. The La Cala Golf Resort is undoubtedly one of the Costa del Sol’s best golf resort with a huge range of golf courses surrounding the resort, including the likes of the Chaparral Golf Club, the Calanova and the Santana Golf. The resort’s location is not its only selling point, however, guests will never struggle to enjoy their relaxing golfing retreat with the resort’s many leisure facilities, including a fantastic spa area and outdoor swimming pool area. The La Cala Golf Resort is an unbeatable option for any serious golfer with an impressive three golf courses located on-site to the resort, so golfers are always overwhelmed with options for their next round of golf. The La Cala America, the La Cala Asia and the La Cala Europa all offer players a fantastic round of golf with stunning panoramic views across the rolling hills of the Spanish countryside. Out of the three, the La Cala America is said to offer the best views, however, the La Cala Asia is undoubtedly the most challenging, despite it being the shortest in length.

The La Manga Club Resort is home to anything and everything that a golfer could ever wish for in a golf holiday; fantastic golf, excellent leisure facilities, and both the option of having a self-catered golf holiday in a luxury apartment, as well as a five-star hotel. For all those seeking a luxury golf holiday in Spain, the La Manga Club Principe Felipe is a great choice with its spacious guest rooms, spa and wellness centre, and impeccable service. Here guests can fully indulge in relaxation to make the most out of the fantastic golf on offer just next door. Alternatively, for a more laidback golf holiday, the La Manga Club Las Lomas Village is a great option. The Las Lomas Village comprises of a range of four-star apartments, perfect for a self-catered golf break. Guests can enjoy the La Manga Resort’s excellent facilities at great value for money, including the resort’s highly-acclaimed three golf courses. All three of the golf courses at the La Manga Resort offer golfers the opportunity for a fantastic round of golf, and conveniently for guests, they are never more than a stone’s throw away. Higher handicappers may lean towards the La Manga North more than the other two golf courses as it is typically viewed as the easiest of the trio, whereas the La Manga is home to the best views and the most unique layout. However, out of the three La Manga golf courses, the La Manga West is considered to be the best golf course and it holds the best reputation as it is consistently awarded one of the Top 100 Golf Courses in Europe.

Another great option for your next luxury golf holiday includes the Praia d’el Rey Resort, home to both a five-star hotel and a ‘village’ of apartments and townhouses. Guests here can enjoy a stunning coastal location just next door to one of the many beautiful beaches that Portugal has to offer. Furthermore, the Lisbon province in Portugal is known for its mild climate throughout the year, so the fantastic golf courses in this region can be enjoyed throughout the year. For all those looking for an unbeatably luxurious golfing getaway, the Praia d’el Rey Marriott Golf and Beach Resort is a great option with its modern guest rooms, ideal location and of course, an award-winning golf course just next door. Here, golfers can enjoy the perfect medley of sun, sea, and most importantly, golf. After a fantastic round of golf, guests can head to the neighbouring beach to catch some rays, then head into the local town of Obidos to spend the afternoon meandering around the old cobbled streets. The Silver Coast in Portugal is known across Europe for its golf courses, and the Praia d’el Rey is widely considered to be a centrepiece for it. With a tricky layout that is often prone to strong prevailing winds across the coast, golfers must anticipate a stern test of golf here as they will be forced to utilise every club in their arsenal. Even the most experienced of players will find this golf course to be challenging, so it hardly comes as a surprise that the golf course has been labelled as “wild and wonderful” by the famous Golf World Magazine. For a round of golf, you are sure not to forget anytime soon, the Praia d’el Rey is a great choice.

The Verdura Resort is an unbeatable option for your next luxury golf holiday, and it would make the perfect base to explore the best-golfing treasures that Italy is known so well for. Here, golfers can enjoy an idyllic golfing getaway positioned away from all the busy tourist spots in Italy or the cities, set in the rolling hills of the Sicilian countryside. The resort is home to a luxury five-star hotel located just a stone’s throw away from one of Italy’s best-known golf courses, the Verdura Golf Course, and a long stretch of beach with clear waters and white sand. Not only is the Verdura Resort perfectly positioned to make the most out of Italy’s stunning beaches and fantastic golf, but here guests are also just a short drive away from two of Sicily’s main Greek temples; Agrigento and Selinunte. For a relaxing afternoon when guests are taking a break from enjoying all the local golf courses and the nearby beach, they can head to the resort’s spa centre which is known to be the best in the whole of Sicily with a huge range of facilities and treatments. When the guests at the Verdura Resort have enjoyed a relaxing session at the hotel spa, they can get their heart racing again with a round of golf at the neighbouring Verdura Golf Course. On this golf course, players can take full advantage of the resort’s beautiful coastal setting overlooking the sea and the Sicilian countryside. While the coastal views are undoubtedly stunning, the golf course’s location can cause havoc for a steady scorecard if the prevailing winds are particularly strong, so players must come armed with their A-game here.

Yet another great golf resort located in Portugal is the Monte Rei Golf & Country Club, home to one of the Algarve’s best-known golf courses, and the luxurious Monte Rei Golf and Country Club. This five-star resort comprises of a village of self-catered villas with excellent facilities and an unbeatable location positioned just next door to Portugal’s number one golf course, and several towns are also located just a short drive away. For an afternoon of exploring the local area, guests can head into either Tavira, Monte Gordo or Cabanas with ease as they are all less than a twenty-five-minute drive away from the resort. Therefore, if guests also fancy an evening off cooking and a night exploring the local bars and restaurants, then an opportunity to do so is never far away. However, anything and everything that guests could ever want can be found within the resort; great service, fantastic golf, and five-star leisure facilities. The resort is home to a wide range of leisure facilities including a spa area, tennis courts, a fitness centre, and several outdoor swimming pools. The Monte Rei golf course was only opened in 2007, however, it has already established itself as one of Portugal’s best golf courses, and its condition and reputation are certainly enough to rival any one of the classic golf courses in the Algarve region. Designed by the world-renowned golf architect Jack Nicklaus, all golfers are guaranteed to have an unforgettable round of golf here. With such a prestigious golf course on-site, it comes as no surprise that the Monte Rei Resort is widely regarded as a fantastic golf resort.

The Costa del Sol is easily one of the most sought-after golfing destinations in Europe, and a consistent favourite amongst those that frequent here is the Finca Cortesin Hotel, Golf and Spa due to its stunning location, luxurious facilities and fantastic golf. The hotel offers a complimentary shuttle service to the neighbouring Finca Cortesin golf course, so an unforgettable round of golf is always in easy reach to the guests at this hotel. Aside from its world-class golf course, the Finca Cortesin Hotel, Golf and Spa is also home to a wide range of leisure facilities which are nothing less than what anyone would expect to find at a five-star resort. The fitness centre here has an Olympic-size swimming pool, as well as three other outdoor swimming pools, perfect for soaking up the sun on a relaxing afternoon. Alternatively, the resort is also home to a great range of bars and restaurants to suit any taste. The Finca Cortesin is truly a five-star resort in every aspect, and this does not stop at its golf course. The golf course, designed by the famous golf architect Cabell Robinson, has consistently been ranked amongst the best in the whole of Spain, and it is not difficult to see why. The challenge on this golf course predominantly lies in its size, and even the professionals have struggled to maintain a steady scorecard at one of the many events and tournaments the golf course has hosted.

Last but not least is the Hotel Las Madrigueras, home to the Golf Las Americas golf course. This adults-only hotel is the ideal option for your next luxury golf break with stunning surroundings, impeccable service and great golf just next door. The Canary Islands are known for their mild climate throughout the year, making the Hotel Las Madrigueras an unbeatable choice for a well-deserved winter golfing getaway. Here, guests can enjoy the best of both worlds set back from the buzzing resort centre, but they are still just a short distance away from the Los Cristianos harbour, as well as a range of bars and restaurants. The Hotel Las Madrigueras is perfect for all those looking to relax during the day, either lounging around the pool or at the beach, followed by a spa session, to then enjoy the lively atmosphere that Tenerife is known so well for. Even for a five-star hotel, the guest rooms at the Hotel Las Madrigueras as very spacious, and the top floor guest rooms overlook the neighbouring Golf Las Americas golf course and the ocean. The Golf Las Americas first opened its greens back in 1998, and it is widely considered to be one of the original golf courses responsible for the huge growth of golf in the Canary Islands, as well as setting the standards high for the creation of all future golf courses here. Its greens are kept in immaculate condition throughout the year, so golfers can take full advantage of Tenerife’s yearly average temperature of 23 degrees Celsius. The Golf Las Americas is a leisurely golf course for a great sociable round of golf with a fantastic mix of par 3s, 5s and 4s.

The resort offers guests an excellent range of all-inclusive accommodation packages, meaning guests can make the most out of the resort’s fantastic restaurant options without worrying about the price tag at the end of it.

The Palacio Estoril Hotel Golf and Spa is undoubtedly one of the most luxurious resorts we offer in Portugal, with its stunning classic Portuguese architecture and unbeatable location situated just moments away from Estoril’s main beach. Despite its opening way back in the 1930s, the Palacio Estoril Hotel Golf and Spa has still maintained its authentic charm and character in its décor and style. A stay here would not just be a fantastic option for your next holiday in Portugal because of its excellent service and facilities, but also because the hotel is located in easy reach of the Golf do Estoril, one of the most sought-after golf courses in the Lisbon region. The Golf do Estoril is widely considered to be among some of the most prestigious golf courses in Portugal, and conveniently for all guests at the Palacio Estoril Hotel Golf and Spa, this outstanding golf course is less than a five-minute drive away. The Palacio Estoril Hotel Golf and Spa proved itself to be James Bond worthy in 1969 when it featured heavily in many of the scenes in the sixth instalment, many of which were set around the hotel’s stunning pool area. The hotel truly has something for all guests, whether they are looking for a relaxing yoga session, an indulgent massage, or a swim in the large outdoor swimming pool. If guests want to explore the local surrounding area, the centre of Estoril is literally on their doorstep. The hotel offers its guests two fantastic restaurants and a bar, but if guests are looking to travel further afield, then there is a huge range of bars and restaurants just a few steps away from the hotel.

Another fantastic option for a luxury golf holiday by the beach is the five-star Westin Resort Costa Navarino. This resort is not only great for a golf break, but it also caters fantastically for families so that everyone can make the most of their holiday. Guests will find themselves in the perfect position to make the most out of some of Greece’s most stunning beaches, and of course, its capitating history. The resort is set on top of the beautiful Dunes Beach, and just an hour and a half away from the iconic Ancient Olympia site. If guests can manage to tear themselves away from the neighbouring beach and local historic attractions, then they can also enjoy an unforgettable round of golf on either the Dunes or the Bay golf courses. The guest rooms at the Westin Resort Costa Navarino are set in villas, and some of them even have their own infinity swimming pool. All of the accommodation here are fully equipped with all of the essentials to ensure that guests have an unbeatably luxurious stay. The resort offers guests endless opportunities to fill their days, aside from the two neighbouring golf courses, the Dunes and the Bay golf courses. Whether guests want to make the most out of the resort’s beach location with a range of water sports or spend their day in the recreational centre for a fun game of ten-pin bowling, volleyball, or badminton. Guests are also well and truly spoilt for choice with the resort’s huge range of bars and restaurants; whatever they fancy for dinner, they are sure to be accommodated for with an impressive eleven restaurants.

The Westin brand does not fail to disappoint yet again at the Westin Abu Dhabi Golf Resort and Spa. This resort offers guests the best of both worlds as they are tucked away in a resort away from all the hustle and bustle of the busy tourist areas in Abu Dhabi, but many of the area’s key attractions are just a short drive away. Two of the area’s most popular attractions, Ferrari World and the Sheikh Zayed Mosque, are conveniently located just a fifteen minute drive away, or if guests are looking to make the most out of the guaranteed sunshine, then Abu Dhabi’s best beach, the Corniche, is located just a twenty minute drive away. Not only is the resort’s location a major selling point due to its close proximity to some of the area’s key attractions, but the resort is also located just twenty minutes away from both the Abu Dhabi Golf Club, host to the HSBC Golf Championship, and the Yas Links golf course. The service at the Westin Abu Dhabi Golf Resort and Spa has said to be unmatched, and the standard of its facilities are set to follow. The resort’s main leisure facility is its spa which offers a huge range of treatments and special adults-only areas to ensure its guests are in the right position to take full advantage of the luxury the resort has to offer. Furthermore, only of the three outdoor swimming pools is strictly adults only, and guests can enjoy complimentary access to the exclusive Saadiyat Beach Club.

Yet another fantastic option for your next luxury golf holiday is the Hotel Las Madrigueras, located in Tenerife, one of the most popular golf holiday destinations on offer. Set just a ten-minute walk away from one of Tenerife’s stunning beaches and directly neighbouring the Golf Las Americas golf course, guests here are in the perfect position to have their best luxury golf break yet. Guests can benefit from the resort’s idyllic location away from the popular tourist spots in Tenerife so they can make the most out of the resort’s fantastic five-star facilities and the highly sought-after golf course located just next door. Furthermore, guests need not worry about a lack of dinner options with the hotel’s secluded location as the hotel is home to an award-winning restaurant which serves a varied a la carte menu every evening. Compared to many of the other luxury golf resorts, the Hotel Las Madrigueras offers a much more ‘intimate’ stay as there are only 44 guest rooms and just 13 suites. The hotel is also strictly adults only, meaning a peaceful and relaxing stay is guaranteed. All of the guest rooms here offer stunning views of the neighbouring Atlantic Ocean, the Las Americas golf course, and Tenerife’s small sister island, La Gomera. Even for a five-star hotel, the guest rooms here are particularly spacious with all of the essentials to ensure all guests have a fantastic stay. Tenerife benefits from a mild all-year round climate, so the hotel’s large outdoor swimming pool is always a popular spot to enjoy this.

Vilamoura is undoubtedly one of the most luxurious destinations in the Algarve, known for its world-class golf courses and its upmarket marina. A stay in Vilamoura is a luxurious experience in itself, let alone a stay in the Hilton Vilamoura As Cascatas Golf Resort and Spa. Here, guests will never find themselves short of things to do; the hotel runs a complimentary shuttle service to the nearby Falesia Beach in the summer season, plus the hotel lies just next to the Dom Pedro Pinhal golf course, widely considered to be among the best golf courses in the Algarve. With a fantastic range of leisure facilities, modern décor and spacious guest rooms, it comes as no surprise that the Hilton Vilamoura As Cascatas Golf Resort and Spa is widely considered to be a go-to option for a luxury golf holiday in Portugal. While the adults are challenging the fairways at the local golf courses, the resort’s children’s club can keep the little ones entertained so golfers never have to miss out. To fully relax and indulge in the five-star experience, guests can head to the 7Seven Spa, the largest spa facility in the whole of Portugal. Or alternatively, guests can make the most out of the almost guaranteed sunshine around one of the resort’s five outdoor swimming pools, all of which have different features, such as adults-only access or a faux beach setting. If guests would prefer a quiet night in and they do not fancy venturing into town for dinner, then the hotel is home to two a la carte restaurants. After a fantastic meal, guests can head down to the Beach Club for a well-deserved cocktail.

Last but not least is the five-star Fairplay Golf and Spa Resort, located in the heart of the Costa de la Luz. Guests here are truly in the perfect position to make the most out of the stunning views that Andalucía is known so well for. The resort offers an idyllic stay set in the rolling hills of Andalucía, with the well-known Fairplay Golf Club just next door. The Fairplay Golf Club was designed by Baron Paul Rolin who successfully created a fantastic golf course that can accommodate players of all skillsets and handicaps. With some technical holes, a beautiful landscape and superb facilities, it comes as no surprise that the Fairplay Golf Club is widely considered to be a must-play golf course on the Costa de la Luz Cadiz. If the neighbouring Fairplay Golf Club is not enough to keep guest preoccupied during their stay, then the resort is also home to a wide range of leisure facilities to keep each and every guest entertained. After a gruelling round of golf, guests can head to the Fairplay SPA for a well-deserved treatment, then head to the outdoor pool area to catch some rays. The resort was recently closed for a few years and only reopened in 2017 after completely renovating the guest rooms, so it is fair to say that they meet every standard for your next luxury golf holiday. Furthermore, the resort also opened with a brand new a la carte restaurant which offers al fresco dining on the sun terrace.

We hope that you have enjoyed this week’s blog and that it has encouraged you to loosen your purse strings to splash out on an unforgettable luxury golf holiday. To be well and truly looked after in a stunning resort with some of the most sought-after golf courses just a short distance away, any one of these seven resorts would be an unbeatable option. If you are still finding yourself unpersuaded, then give us a call on 01342 811777, and we will do our best to convince you otherwise.

This week’s blog is a guide to nine tricky golf courses for those who like a challenge. It is fair to say that golfers often do not tend to go after the easy option; they would much rather seize the opportunity to show off to their fellow players. Here, we have hand-picked some of the most challenging golf courses in Europe. All nine of these fantastic golf courses offer a stern test of golf that can be best appreciated by players that like to be kept on their toes, and those that ultimately search for an invigorating challenge.

The Espiche Golf Lagos is a hidden gem in the Algarve, one of the most popular golfing destinations in Europe. Players must navigate around the 18 holes here, through a unique layout with a challenge characterised by the strategic placement of greenery and fauna. While the fairways may appear to be on the generous side, with dense forestry lining the edges and subtle contouring, golfers are guaranteed an unforgettable test of golf. This par 72 golf course has been designed to incorporate most of the landscape’s natural features, which in turn creates a stunning landscape, and of course a fantastic challenge. Not only must golfers anticipate masses of greenery and fauna to manoeuvre their shots around; the layout is also rife with bunkers and water features that run their natural course throughout the course. Despite the Espiche Golf Lagos being a relatively new golf course in the Western Algarve, it has already established itself as one of the most challenging and unique golf courses in the area. With this layout, players will find they will succeed more in course management if they prioritise accuracy over the length of their shots. There are some truly tricky tight spots throughout, therefore the general line of advice for those that want to attempt the Espiche Golf Lagos is to take plenty of spare balls! Golfers must anticipate the challenge at the par-4 3rd hole as it is widely considered to be the most difficult on the course with a 409-metre-long uphill fairway. Whilst the fairway here appears to be generously wide, the subtle undulations are sure to trip up even the most experienced player.

The Dolce Campo Real Lisboa golf course is situated just half an hour’s drive away from the centre of Lisbon. Here, golfers can enjoy an invigorating round of golf across a unique terrain with rolling hills and valleys. The challenge does not end here; not only is the landscape truly unique with consistent elevation changes, but there are also dense areas of greenery and forestry throughout. Golfers must play with the perfect balance of accuracy and length in order to manoeuvre their shot across the many water hazards and some tricky doglegs which demand a blind shot. Even the most skilled players will find every element of their game challenged at the Dolce CampoReal Lisboa as they must overcome the natural terrain of the original landscape. Donald Steel, one of the most famous golf architects in the world, has created a fantastic golf course built on the natural beauty of the former terrain. The golf course that stands today is rife with the original landscape’s features, including the natural greenery and fauna weaving in and out of the stunning valleys and hills. Players are wrong for assuming they have an advantage with an anticipated view from the elevated tees; the greens are subtly undulating, creating a surprising challenge.

The Shire is widely considered to be among some of the best golf courses in the UK, as well as one of the most challenging. Designed by the leading golf architect Seve Ballesteros, the Shire golf course is guaranteed to keep golfers on their toes throughout their game. Players can enjoy a fantastically varied round of golf; at this golf course, no hole is even remotely similar. The golf course comprises of six par threes, six par fours and six par fives, all of which offer a unique layout and a stern test of golf. Long hitters will feel right at home here as their skills will be utilised best with the challenge to overcome the many large water hazards. They can reap the benefits of the risk-reward system at this golf course, and those that cannot rise to the challenge will be penalised. The challenge here does not just end at the strategic placement of the water hazards and the sheer size of them; there are over 10,000 trees at this parkland golf course just waiting to swallow any wayward shots. Furthermore, the greens are unbeatably fast and feature subtle contours to trip up even the most skilled golfer.

The Salobre New, formerly known as the Salobre North, is a distinctive golf course that is guaranteed to set the hearts racing of all players, regardless of their skill set or experience. This golf course offers a unique round of golf to its players with an original landscape that is sure to be remembered for years to come. Despite the fact that this par 69 golf course is not nearly as long as its sister golf course, the Salobre Old, nor the other golf courses in the surrounding area, that is not to say that golfers will find a round of golf here a walk in the park. The Salobre New was designed with the emphasis on the use of accuracy instead of length, meaning golfers must be sure to play with their A-game throughout their round. Despite only opening in 2008 as a new addition to the huge variety of golf in Gran Canaria, the Salobre New has already created a steady reputation for itself as one of the most challenging golf courses on the island. A highlight of the stern test of golf on offer at the Salobre New includes the par-4 10th hole where players must utilise the use of their iron in order to cross an undulating fairway to reach the multi-tiered green.

One of the most unique golf courses in the Algarve includes the Monte Rei, which has accurately been labelled as “the jewel in the crown of Portuguese golf”. Conveniently for players, the Monte Rei is home to a peaceful and tranquil atmosphere to soothe any tempers raised from the challenging layout they have to overcome. Designed by Jack Nicklaus, one of the most famous golf architects in history, at the Monte Rei, golfers are guaranteed to have an unforgettable round of golf. Despite the huge range of golf in the Algarve and its constant expansion, the Monte Rei has continued to maintain a big name for itself in Europe. The main challenge here is characterised by the nature and placement of water hazards and bunkers; in order to maintain a steady scorecard, golfers must play with the perfect balance of length and accuracy across the 7,224-yard-long layout. Nicklaus certainly did not hold back in the use of water hazards for this layout, as they feature in eleven out of the eighteen holes here. The challenge does not simply end here; with original fauna and greenery, strategic bunkering and undulating terrain, the Monte Rei is not a good golf course for players to choose if they want to show off to their fellow players.

The par 73 Alferini golf course is a stand-out course in the midst of all the classic Spanish layouts in the Costa del Sol. Instead of just providing an attractive layout and a pretty scenery, the architect of the Alferini, Antonio Garcia Garrido, has succeeded in striving to create a fantastic golf course that offers a great challenge. Many of the golf courses in the Costa del Sol are typically attractive, and some might say they lack a certain edge to them. However, the Alferini puts this preconception to waste with a truly unique layout that is sure to provide a stern test of golf to all those that attempt it. The golf course was designed and created with its natural features in mind in order to preserve its original beauty and to maintain the landscape’s unique features. The par 5 16th hole is a particular stand-out to all of its players. At this hole, long hitters may initially revel in the lengthy and seemingly straightforward fairway. However, as any experienced golfer can advise – looks can often be deceiving! As the fairway approaches the green, it narrows significantly, therefore the element of accuracy must be focused in on as players soon find themselves surrounded by bunkers. With a unique layout that is sure to make low handicappers break a sweat, it comes as no surprise that Michael Campbell has labelled this hole as his favourite across the entire golf course.

The Le Golf National Albatros is known as the most challenging golf course in the surrounding areas around the French capital, therefore it hardly comes as surprising that it was selected as the 2018 Ryder Cup venue. It is fair to say that this golf course has lived up to each and every one of its expectations, and this has been shown to be the case as players return year after year. Golfers push their skills to their limit to make the most out of the risk-reward system the golf course operates on. Golfers are thrown into the challenge here from the get-go; however, the real challenge lies right at the end of the round at the par 4 18th hole. This is the hole to make or break an unforgettable round of golf with a huge water hazard positioned to the left side of the fairway and areas of dense bunkering on the right side. Here, the determinant of success lies in the approach shot. Whether players are happy with the end result or not, their round at the Le Golf National Albatros is sure to be a memorable one.

The La Manga Club West is the perfect golf course for any golfer looking for a challenging yet varied round of golf. The front and the back loops of nine differ in both their characteristics and the skills that they demand. The front nine holes demand golfers play with precise accuracy, and while the back nine appear to be more open, any decent player knows never to take anything at face value. The back nine might comprise of a more open layout in comparison to the narrow and compact front nine, however that is not to say that they are any less challenging. Golfers will find themselves thrown into the challenge from the very first hole, and they must do their best to play consistently as the course rapidly changes in elevation. If players are able to focus on anything but the challenge at hand, they should take their time to appreciate the immaculately kept landscape here; spectators frequently comment on the fantastic condition of the West golf course. At the La Manga West, the best is saved until last at the final 18th hole. Here, golfers must push themselves for one last time in order to give a half-decent tee shot. If they cannot do this, then there is usually some leeway due to the width of the fairway, but golfers should not count on this.

At the Acaya Golf Club, the challenge lies in the difficulty of club selection. If players can manage this, then they have a chance to do well here. There is a huge range of challenges to be met at the Acaya Golf Club, therefore golfers must choose their club carefully. Players must overcome strategically placed bunkers and water hazards that come into play at many of the holes here in order to score well. Whilst the Acaya Golf Club is undeniably one of the most challenging golf courses in Italy, it is also one of the most breath-taking due to its stunning location in the heart of the countryside. The architects of the Acaya Golf Club sought to incorporate the features of the natural landscape with their vision to create a fantastic golf course that forces players to use all of the clubs in their arsenal. It is certainly a unique aim to want to encourage players to use all fourteen of their clubs, however it is fair to say that this has been achieved, and it simply adds to the challenge. With three huge lakes and dense green areas consisting of olive groves, players must anticipate a testing round of golf that they are sure not to forget any time soon. The main challenge here is characterised by water hazards as the three lakes at the golf course come into play mainly in the back nine holes. The 16th, 17th and 18th holes comprise of tricky par fours; therefore, players must be sure to save the best of their game until last.

We hope that you have enjoyed this week’s blog, and hopefully, we have inspired you to push beyond your boundaries to truly test your golfing skills on your next golf holiday in Europe.

To keep your Golf Escape under the budget you desire can sometimes be a tricky job for the tour leader. Of course, everyone wants to play the best courses and stay in the nicest hotels possible, but often, it cannot be done for the set budget. If you can be flexible with your dates, then there are always some little periods in the year where there is a deal to be had. So here are our top tips of when to stay and play at certain hotels and courses for the 2019/20 season.

Our first visit is to Las Colinas golf course on the border of the Costa Blanca and Murcia regions. Voted Spain’s best course 3 years in a row at the World Golf Awards, this is one that should be on everyone’s list to play. Littered with bunkers and huge water hazards, it is a course that is very pleasant on the eye. With little else around the course too, it is a peaceful experience, which helps as you work your way around this challenging course. But when should you play it? September. Las Colinas class September as their ‘low season’, even though it is a lot of regions most popular month for golfers. They cut the prices by 25% and makes one of Europe’s best courses a very affordable round of golf. Coming in at below £80 per person with a buggy included too, you have to include it in your itinerary for anybody staying from La Manga right up to Benidorm. It is well worth the journey.

The next stop off is in the Eastern Algarve and we are going to talk luxury. Not just luxury accommodation, but a golf course to match it too. Monte Rei Golf & Country Club is one of Portugals finest golf resorts, perhaps even the best. Its huge Villas are traditional in design with modern touches throughout, making it the perfect place to relax before tackling the demanding
course on site. The Nicklaus course of Monte Rei is a Golf Escapes favourite and has to be considered a bucket list course that competes with some of the best courses in the world. Perfectly maintained all year, stunning surroundings and a level of service you can’t imagine is why this course is so superior to many others. Sounds expensive right? For a resort this good, it is worth paying for, but in the prime golfing period between 01st – 14th March, You could do 3 nights and 2 rounds (with buggies and range balls) from £359 per person! So, I bet we can guess where you will be going next March!

The Canary Islands. Known for its steady warm temperatures all year round, making it a fantastic winter golf destination where you can get away from the rain, wind and snow in the UK for some golf in the sun. The golf courses know this though and for that reason, their high seasons are from October through to April. So why don’t we go there in May or September? Same weather, same golf courses, but a fraction of the price. For example, Costa Adeje Golf in Tenerife. If you were to play this course on the 1 st of May or September, compared to the 1 st of November or February you would save over £35 per round!

The same for Salobre Old Course in Gran Canaria. You would save over £25 per round at this golf course. These are just two examples, but similar savings are to be had at all courses in Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura during the ‘summer’ months. It seems strange to think things would be cheaper at these times of the year, but it really is the case, we promise.

When you think of a good time of year to play golf abroad, most people would say April, May September give you the full package. Sun, but not too hot and also not paying the high hotel prices that June, July and August bring. Nestled right in the centre of Paphos new town is the Dionysos Hotel, this property offers an unbelievable price in April. Peak golf season and with average temperatures 21°, this has to be the perfect opportunity to visit such a fantastic golf destination. The 3-star hotel in a perfect location is £20 per person, per night cheaper in April that it is in September! This hotel paired with the fabulous courses the island has to offer such as Aphrodite Hills, Secret Valley, Elea and Minthis makes for the perfect golfing getaway for couples and groups alike. They very much look forward to welcoming you in the most wonderful Cypriot manor.

Next is an option for groups on a budget. Mar Menor Golf Resort in Murcia is a resort that continues to baffle everyone here at Golf Escapes, but for all the right reasons. The resort has a 5-star hotel, 4-star apartments, a good selection of bars and restaurants and a lovely Jack Nicklaus golf course all within a stone’s throw of each other. Yet the apartments, known as ‘The Residences at Mar Menor’ is one of the cheapest and best value packages available in Europe. The resort is cheap all year
round, but to make it even better, they class the golfing peak season of May as their ‘low season’. So let’s talk numbers. 3 nights 2 rounds from £159 & 7 nights 4 rounds from £309 in May, yes May! Not only is there a great course on-site, but there are also 6 other courses that you can play for no extra cost and use the free shuttle bus provided by the resort to take you there too. We hope to see you there in May, because we will be there.

Praia D’el Rey. I am sure most of you have heard of the resort north of Lisbon and most would think of it as a prestigious golf course. That’s because it is. It has recently had a rather good addition to the resort too. West Cliffs golf course opened 18 months ago and has quickly become one of the most sought- after courses in the country. These two courses mixed with Royal Obidos and Bom Sucesso (all within 15 minutes of each other) makes for one of the best selections of courses to play in Europe.
Back to the question of when to visit though… To be honest, we’ve cheated with this one. Go at any time. Any time from April until June and from September until the end of October is when we would recommend though. It can be a bit chillier here in the lower seasons, so nice to wait until the weather warms up, but when it does, it is a place of stunning natural beauty. Prices at either the 5 star Marriot Praia D’el Rey Hotel or the Praia D’el Rey Village (apartments and villas) are fantastic value for money during these periods. It is another resort that is hard to understand why it is so cheap considering the quality of golf courses. With 4 nights and 3 rounds staying in the village starting from £245 this package would be at least double the price if the resort was based in the Algarve. Golf Escapes really can’t applaud this resort highly enough as it is a truly unbelievable destination for the keenest of golfers.

Last but certainly not least… The Conrad Algarve. Voted in the top 5 hotels in the Algarve on TripAdvisor, a Michelin Star restaurant and awards under its belt such as having the best spa and the best hotel suite in Europe. The hotel is situated in the perfect location of the classy town, Quinta do Lago. Opposite bars and restaurants and 3 world class golf courses (Quinta do Lago North, South & Laranjal) within 5 minutes, this hotel has everything to offer. The hotel is luxury in every sense of the
word and is one of the most expensive hotels in the Algarve and rightly so. It is quite simply outstanding. Of course, though, it wouldn’t be in this article if it didn’t have a sneaky period where it becomes a place where anybody can visit. This period is from the beginning of March until the beginning of April, the perfect time of the year for golfers. It is literally half the price in March
compared to June & September. A Golf Escape of pure quality throughout is very possible and more than affordable in the month of March and if you wanted to treat yourself next year, get it booked sooner rather than later for even further discounts.
We hope this might have helped plan your holiday for this year and next. Be as flexible as possible with your dates and you never know what deals might just be a few days away from the dates you were first thinking.

This week’s blog is a guide to ten of the best courses in the Lisbon region. Lisbon boasts everything that you could possibly need or want for your next golf escape from fascinating culture, rich history, brilliant food and drink to luxurious resorts and brilliant golf courses. Oh, and you can enjoy almost year-round lovely golfing weather here! We have compiled a list of our favourite ten courses in the region, so take a look and see if any of them pique your interest for a golf escape…

Aroeira Golf Resort stretches out over 900-acres and boasts two brilliant golf courses: Aroeira I and Aroeira II. The resort is situated just 20 minutes south of Lisbon and boasts a beautiful location on the Setubal Peninsula within a stunning preservation area.

Aroeira I was designed by Frank Pennink and opened for play in 1972. The course was an immediate hit and went on to host the 1996 and 1997 Portuguese Opens. The course measures just over 6,100 metres from the back tees. Its lush Bermuda fairways wind through a dense pine forest filled with pine trees. Each hole along the course presents you with a different challenge, the only common theme that the holes have in common is that there is a complete absence of any fairway bunkers. However, despite the lack of bunkers, there are many trees that were strategically left in play to catch any errant shots.

The landscape of the area is perfect for a golf course, it is gently undulating, and you can enjoy the beautiful scenery of wild flowers, wildlife and the preservation area. The front nine are very enjoyable holes with some notable favourites like the downhill par 3 8th which features out of bounds to the right of the hole. The back nine are even better, the signature hole of the course is considered to be the 14th which is a very short par 3 where you play slightly downhill to reach the green which sits behind a very long bunker on the corner of a small lake. This is a beautiful short hole but a difficult one! After your round, enjoy a few drinks in the clubhouse which is lovely and homely.

Aroeira II was only opened in April 2000, the course was designed by Donald Steel and is highly regarded as being an excellent golf course. The course measures just over 6,400 metres and was built to European Tour recommendation standards. Much like Aroeira I, Aroeira II is crafted through heavily wooded, gently undulating terrain. Unlike, Aroeira I, Aroeira II boasts six large lakes which are situated along your route and are waiting for any errant shots.

The holes on this course are very long and cleverly designed to use the natural contours of the land, many of the bunkers have a Scottish pot bunker style and are very lethal! The greens are large and slick but to get to them, you must avoid the trees, the sand and the water which is not an easy challenge. It is no surprise that both Aroeira I and II made our list of recommendations; these are impressive, challenging and beautiful courses so don’t miss out on a round on either one of them.

Arguably one of the best golf complexes situated on the Iberian Peninsula is the Ribagolfe complex of 36 holes and it isn’t hard to see why. Both Ribagolfe I and II offer golfers of all abilities an exciting and unforgettable round of golf. The only con of this complex is that it is 30 minutes from Lisbon, 45 minutes from Sesimbra and an hour from Cascais/Estoril. However, it is well worth the drive for any serious golfer.

Ribagolfe I only opened for play in 2004 but the course has already matured, each of its holes is memorably beautiful. The course’s main features included cork tree-lined fairways, water hazards and undulating, well-bunkered greens. The course measures an impressive 7,370 yards from the tips and was designed by Peter Townsend with tournament play in mind. However, due to the range of tee boxes, this course can be enjoyed by those with higher handicaps from the forwards tees.

Ribagolfe I plays much longer and tighter than Ribagolfe II which means that accuracy is key if you hope to finish with a good scorecard. The back nine are the most challenging on this course, there are the very long par 5 12th hole and the short par 4 14th. There is also the shortest hole on the course, the all-carry par 3 15th where you must avoid the water which sits to the front left of a raised green which is also flanked on either side by sand. Whether you are a top golfer or an average one, a round at Ribagolfe I will not disappoint.

Ribagolfe II also opened for play in 2004 and was also designed by the European Golf Design Company but in collaboration with former Walker and Ryder Cup player Michael King. The course was designed as a members’ course and like its brother course, is routed through cork oak and boasts a fair challenge in lovely surroundings. The course is shorter than its sibling and its fairways are much more open and lead to large, reasonably contoured greens.

Water hazards only come into play on a couple of holes along this course including the short par 4 6th where the creek cuts across right in front of the green. There is also the long par 5 13th where the sane stream cuts through the fairway into a small lake sitting on the right side of the hole. Overall, this course is considered to be slightly easier than Ribagolfe I, but it can still pose a firm but fair challenge to golfers of all abilities. It is no surprise that we highly recommend a visit to the Ribagolfe complex when you are on your next golf break to Lisbon.

Situated between the town of Belas and Vale de Lobo, just a short drive from Lisbon city centre is Belas. This course opened for play in 1997 and stretches to a strong 6,280 metres from the tips. A round of golf here is an enjoyable challenge for golfers of all abilities making it a perfect choice for a holiday course.

The course has been carved through valleys and over the rolling slopes of Carreguiera, you can enjoy rugged hillsides, beautifully moulded fairways, large bunkers and areas of treacherous water throughout your round here. There are many impressive holes along the course, but particularly impressive ones include the short par 5 15th which features a stream that cuts the fairway right where those of you who are big hitters would place your tee shot. The green, once you reach it, is back-to-front and slopes which makes your putting difficult. There is also the finishing 18th which is a very strong and watery par 4 where you must carry your approach shot across a U-shaped lake in order to reach the final, narrow green. This is an impressive and scenic golf course situated in an ideal location for anyone holidaying in Lisbon.

Lisbon Sports Club is another one of our recommendations. The course was founded in 1922 and was designed by Hawtree and Sons, it is a charming, 18-hole parkland course situated in one of the most picturesque regions just outside of the greater Lisbon area – just 20 minutes from the city. This is a perfect course to play just as you get off the plane due to its location and it works as a great warm-up course at just over 5,200 metres from the back tees.

The course is nestled in a valley and features tree-lined fairways, the main characteristics of the course are raised tees and elevated greens. Right from the first tee, you can enjoy eye-catching holes, the first hole is a par 3 which is played downhill to a heavily-guarded with sand green. Then, you embark on the toughest hole on the course, the 403-metre par 4 2nd. This a brilliant golf course which has some tricky challenges, lovely scenery and boasts a brilliant location, make sure it is one for your must-play list.

Golf do Estoril has had the honour of hosting the Portuguese Open 20 times, it is one of Portugal’s oldest courses but has stood the test of time and is still one of the most enjoyable golfing experiences in the country. The course was designed by Mackenzie Ross and features a fairly straightforward layout where you will be rewarded for your accuracy rather than your power shots, this is due to the fact that the course is fairly short at just over 5,200 metres.

The course is set out amongst eucalyptus, pine and mimosa trees and boasts a few water hazards. The main challenge of the course comes from the very narrow fairways and undulating landscape. There are quite a few impressive holes for you to enjoy on this course, but we will mention a few of the standout holes here. The short downhill 3rd and right doglegged 9th are both brilliant par 4s. You also have the left doglegged 14th which is a brilliant hole and the 16th which has been ranked as one of the best par 3s in the whole of Portugal! Golf do Estoril is a fantastic test of golf which is full of history. On your next golf escape to Lisbon, make sure to book yourself a round on this prestigious course.

Penha Longa resort is situated to the west of the city of Lisbon and is set in the southern foothills of the Sintra Cascais Nature Park. You can enjoy beautiful landscapes of valleys, hills and rocky outcrops as well as extensive vegetation. There are two excellent courses situated within the resort, but we recommend the championship course – the Atlantic.

The Atlantic was designed by Robert Trent Jones Jnr and opened for play in 1992, it went on to hose the Portuguese Open in 1994. As you make your way around the course, you will find yourself travelling up and down the hills around the south side of the clubhouse, from these peaks you can enjoy the most amazing views of the coastal towns of Estoril and Cascais as well as the Atlantic. Even if the wind isn’t blowing, this course is a stern test of golf to those of all abilities but, when the wind is up, the course becomes a real test.

There are many standout holes along the course including the par 5 6th where the green is beautifully framed by a lake and boasts the backdrop of a medieval arched wall and castle tower. There is also the par 3 15th where you must carry your shot over water, but this shot is often made difficult by the winds! Undoubtedly, the hardest hole on the course is the 16th where you must carry a long drive over a valley before taking your uphill approach shot to the narrow green. This fantastic course is a challenging and beautiful one – not to be missed out on whilst you are taking your next golf escape to Lisbon.

Oitavos Dunes course is often ranked within the top five courses in the whole of Portugal and it isn’t hard to see why. The course is located within the Sintra-Cascais National Park and opened for play in September 2001. From the course, you can enjoy stunning views of the Atlantic and the Sintra Mountains. This course was designed by Arthur Hills who only designed two European golf courses as the rest of his accomplishments are set within the USA.

Measuring just over 6,300 metres from the competition tees, the course is not overly long, but it boasts a stunning mix of both woodland and links-style holes that have been beautifully laid in order to make use of the existing landscape. Each and every hole flows well and features strategically positioned hazards and firm, fast greens. The beginning holes are quality but not difficult holes, although they are all tree-lined and feature careful bunkering as well as tricky greens! The following holes boast more of a links feel to them with a sandy ground, dunes and much fewer trees to watch out for. The final two holes require you to venture back into the trees and pose a stern finishing challenge.

There are so many brilliant holes situated along the course but the 14th is probably the signature hole. The 14th is a brilliant par 3 which can play a lot longer than its 153 metres suggests, you play your tee shot across a storm ravine which then runs all the way down the right-hand side of the hole. This is a superb course which can be paired beautifully with a stay at the Oitavos Hotel.

Last, but certainly not least, we have Quinta do Peru which is situated to the south of Lisbon between Sesimbra and Setubal. The is one of the most exclusive courses in the region but it is possible to book tee times here if you get in early enough. The course is set within a pine forest which extends to more than 300 acres, you can enjoy the Arrabida Mountains as a backdrop to the course. There is no doubting that this is a very special course, it is routed across a high undulating plateau from which you can enjoy stunning views across the treetops.

Both sets of nine holes begin with very challenging par 5s and finish with extremely difficult holes. The 9th and the 18th are long par 4s. If you decide to take on this course from the back tees, you certainly are in for a challenge due to the huge American-style bunkers and many water hazards, don’t expect to play to handicap during your first attempt on this course. This course boasts an excellent reputation, but make sure to see for yourself what the fuss is about and book your next golf escape today…
