Happy New Year to everyone from all of us here at Golf Escapes, we hope that this year is filled with great rounds of golf, beautiful hotels and brilliant weather. Of course, as you may know, there are few places better to find inspiration for your next golf break than right here on the Golf Escapes blog page and this week you will not be disappointed. Here are our top seven golf escapes that should serve as inspiration for your next golf holiday…

Firstly, we have the four-star Iberostar Founty Beach Hotel which boasts an idyllic location on the shore of Agadir beach in Morocco where its guests can enjoy almost 10km of unspoilt coastline. The property was renovated just last year and now boasts plenty of leisure facilities including a large outdoor pool, a fitness centre, a spa and tennis courts as well as beautiful accommodation. Each of the guestrooms is air-conditioned and boasts a seating area, minibar, TV and a private ensuite bathroom. In addition, all of the rooms boast a private balcony or terrace from which guests can enjoy stunning views over the Atlantic Ocean.

Whilst you are here, you are within easy access of some of the best golf clubs in the area including Golf du Soleil which boasts two courses, Golf Les Dunes and Golf de L’Ocean. Golf de L’Ocean officially opened in December 2009 and within a year had already built up a brilliant reputation for being a fantastic course with three uniquely characterised sets of nine holes for players to enjoy. Golf du Soleil is another 36-hole complex which has been separated into two combinations of 18-holes to create the Tikida and Championship golf courses. One of the best things about these courses is that golfers of all skills are accommodated for, so everyone is sure to enjoy a round or two here.

With several excellent golf courses within the local area, wonderful amenities, a stunning beach and three different modern restaurants serving local and international cuisine onsite of the hotel, it is no surprise that we recommend the Iberostar Founty Beach Hotel for your next golf escape.

Up next, we have the five-star Praia d’el Rey Marriott Golf and Beach Resort which is situated in the region of Obidos besides one of the most breath-taking beaches in Europe. The hotel boasts beautifully appointed guestrooms which boast stunning views over the Atlantic Ocean and the 18-hole championship golf course as well as all of the other amenities that you would expect from a hotel of this standard including TVs and air-conditioning. The World’s Most Weird and Wonderful Golf Courses

With such a wide variety of different golfing destinations in the world, there are countless weird and wonderful courses that any avid golf fan must visit. Whether you’d like a relaxing, spa style golf break, or you’re more interested in a unique and unusual setting to play a round of your favourite sport, here are 6 of the quirkiest courses around!

Prison View Golf Course – USA

Not your average, relaxing setting for a golf escape break; Prison View Golf Course in the Louisiana State Penitentiary is known for being home to the ‘bloodiest prison in America’. Its grounds are the same size as Manhattan and the immediate thing you notice upon driving in there is the Death Row Complex. The film ‘Dead Man Walking’ was filmed at this prison, but the true violence living behind these walls is far scarier than the fiction it famously housed – so much so that guests are required to go through high-level security checks before their round of golf.

Nullarbor Links, Nullabor Plains – Australia

Nullarbor Links in Nullarbor Plains Australia boasts the world’s longest Golf Course stretching to a massive 850 miles with one hole in each participating town or roadhouse along the Eyre Highway. The word ‘Nullarbor’ originates from Latin meaning ‘no trees’ but there isn’t really much else here either – apart from the huge golf course that is. This impressive course was initially created to give Austrailian truckers something to do on the remote, long stretch of road as they passed by.

The Amazon Golf Course

Like the thought of playing a round of golf in the middle of the beautiful Amazon rainforest? The Amazon Golf Course located in Iquitos, Peru offers a whole new golfing experience. Not only will you be sharing the course with piranhas, caiman and snakes, but it is also standard procedure that each player is handed a machete on arrival, along with their clubs. This is definitely one for the thrill-seeking golfers out there!

Don Mueang – Bangkok

If you’re looking for adventure, then Don Muang Golf Course should be at the top of your golf bucket list. It’s owned by the Royal Thai Air Force and is positioned directly in between Don Mueang Airport’s two parallel and busy runways. The greens and fairways themselves aren’t particularly fancy; however, you can’t quite beat the location for bringing something unique to the table. What cooler interruption to your game is there than watching a Boeing 747 take off or land?

The Lost City Golf Course – South Africa

The Lost City Golf Course located in South Africa just beyond the Palace at the Lost City resort looks like something out of a film. The Lost City itself is inspired by the old African myth of a lost kingdom, and the entire setting of the palace and all of its surroundings replicates that through its exquisite architecture and impressive features. The Lost City Golf Course includes various different themes throughout from desert, to mountain and parkland. Be sure to be careful when you reach the 13th hole though – known for being unlucky for more than one reason, it is home to a group of terrifying Nile crocodiles!

We hope that you have enjoyed this week’s blog and that one of these excellent resorts or experiences has appealed to you for your next golf break…

This week’s blog is a guide to some of the best golf courses from around the world that we recommend having on your bucket list. There are some spectacular golf courses out there and if you are a discerning golfer you will have identified the ones that you want to have the opportunity to play but we recommend these brilliant courses as a round on one of these courses is truly unforgettable.

Both of the courses at Fairmont St Andrew’s are incredible and each deserve a place on this list and it isn’t hard to see why. The Kittocks course is situated on elevated ground next to the cliff-tops and boasts a fantastic and dramatic design that is a brilliant test of golf. The course features two man-made lakes but the layout of the course honours the tradition of golf at St Andrew’s with two double greens and many deep pot bunkers. As you play your round, you will meander along the Fife coastline where you can enjoy beautiful views over St Andrews which just adds to the brilliant feel of this course. Beware of this course, you may be eased in for the first few holes but when you get to the par-5 5th hole, you never really look back. The Torrance course is a testing one at 7,230 yards from the back tees. The course played host to The Open in 2010 and is a top-quality course right from the welcome that you receive in the clubhouse to each and every one of the well-manicured greens. The course is built on the cliff tops and whilst you are enjoying your round you can enjoy stunning views over the North Sea. Like its sister course, you have a gentle start, but the course soon becomes trickier. With a professional welcome at the clubhouse and great service as well as two beautifully manicured courses which both will provide you with an excellent test of golf, it is no surprise that we recommend that Fairmont St Andrews Golf Club has a place on your golfing bucket list.

Next, is the brilliant Albatros at Le Golf National which is considered to be one of the best championship courses in Europe and so it is no surprise that the course will host the 2018 Ryder Cup. The course boasts brilliantly fast greens, undulating fairways and links-style bunkers which makes this course a strategic challenge of golf. During your round here, you will need to use every single club in your bag in order to score as well as you can. The finale of this course is very impressive, and the greens are surrounded by water hazards which makes it a fantastic and challenging end to the course and is sure to mean some last-minute drama at the Ryder Cup later this year. It is not surprising that this is a recommendation of ours for your golfing bucket list and so make sure that you book your golf break soon as possible as we are sure that this course will be getting a lot of attention this year…

Fancourt Golf Club’s Links course is another one that we highly recommend to you and is arguably South Africa’s premier leisure resort which is situated in the heart of the Garden Route. The course is situated on over 1,500 acres of lush African countryside and boasts the majestic Outeniqua Mountains as the perfect backdrop. This Gary Player course has a unique feel to it and is a magnificent round of golf with some amazing wildlife and scenery to enjoy during your round if you can pull your eyes away from the course! There are no easy holes on the course and the rough is severe and penal, if you’re a high handicapper this may not be the best course for you but is one that you can aspire to play.

The K Club is widely considered to be one of the most opulent golf resorts in Ireland so it isn’t hard to see why we have added this to our list of golf courses that should be on your bucket list. The Palmer Ryder course at K Club is a stern test of golf at 7,337 yards from the back tees. As you play your round here, you will have to take on many different challenges successfully in order to finish the round with a good scorecard. These challenges range from the vast number of water hazards to strategically placed bunkers and fast greens. This course should not be underestimated and even if you don’t score well, a trip to The K Club is a brilliant one with first-class service and facilities as well as a course with a fantastic layout and stunning views. There are some very intimidating holes which you must tackle carefully including the 16th which is a very long par-5 at just under 600 yards from the blue tees and boasts a double dogleg where you must navigate your ball around the water and bunkers as well as many trees before you get to approach the green which is protected on two sides by the River Laffey and is difficult to reach successfully. This is a brilliant course with some unique and interesting holes as well as a lovely clubhouse to enjoy a drink and meal in after.

Last, but certainly not least, is Real Club Valderrama which has hosted many championship golfing events since its opening and has justifiably been ranked as the number one course in Europe. It is always in immaculate condition and boasts a great design but is one that challenges even the best of golfers with many tight holes and hazards to navigate your way around. The closing holes are always described as being very tough but if you choose your tee option wisely then you should be able to get a fairly good scorecard. Although the green fee is a little expensive here, it is more than worth the money to get the chance to play on this world-renowned course.

We hope that you have taken a note of the courses you would be most interested in adding to your golfing bucket list and that you consider booking a golf break to one of them and the fantastic hotels that are nearby to these brilliant courses…

This week’s blog is a guide to some of our best long-haul golf holidays which would be perfect for you to book now to enjoy this year. With a lack of vitamin D available right now in the UK, it is time to start thinking about where your next golf escape will be to and one of these brilliant hotels is the perfect retreat from the bad weather and into the sun…

Day 6

The day dawned with an impenetrable sea-fog engulfing the course and I was resigned to our run of sunny days coming to an end, and to not playing Oubaai. Warren though was unperturbed and over breakfast – great omelette, the fog magically cleared.  In 10 minutes – never seen that before. And there were the blue skies once more.

The Oubaai course (Par 72, 6,516 yards) was more to my liking and I began to get my confidence back and was notching up the odd par. Then we came to the 190 yard Par 3 over the tree lined gorge – you were either on the green or you were in trouble – and memories of ‘those’ holes at Pinnacle Point came flooding back. No problem though, I cleared the gorge and was the only one to score on the hole. Perhaps my fortune had changed? Fancourt next.

It’s a very short drive to George and Fancourt and takes us less than 15 minutes. We’re greeted with a glass of ‘fizz’ on arrival and had a few minutes to look at the communal areas of the bar and sitting areas and pro-shop. Impressive.

For the first time on the trip, we had the rest of the afternoon to ourselves

Dinner was hosted by Fancourt in La Cantina, an intimate restaurant offering some amazing Italian inspired dishes such as Octopus carpaccio.

Day 7

Today Marcos, Fancourt’s golf director, hosted us with a round on the Outeniqua course (Par 72, 5,986 yards off the middle tees). Outeniqua is one of the three courses offered at Fancourt; the other two being the Montagu and Fancourt Links, the latter being South Africa’s No. 1 rated course and one you can only play if you stay at Fancourt. It is a private course with just 46 members……….I wonder what their annual membership costs?

We booked a caddy, a black man called Whitey who lived in George, who was quite a character but early on I learned two valuable lessons early on with a caddy I had only just met; “here is your ball” really means “this may be your ball” and he had no idea of how far I could hit the ball – to be fair neither do I sometimes.

“Can I reach that bunker?”

“No”.

“Sand wedge please”

Outeniqua was a lovely course, with some challenging holes but not too much so – as long as you can hit your ball where you know it needs to go. If only!

I came off the course with a couple of pars and with a birdie on the Par 3 15th.  My glass of Windhoek Light tasted particularly sweet.

Following a sight inspection of the whole property including the exclusive Fancourt Manor, which is ideal for couples who desire some privacy and some pampering, we ate at Henry Whites in Fancourt Manor. What an exquisite experience, attentive but subtle service, a varied menu without too many choices and a great wine list.

 Day 8

We bade farewell to Fancourt and continued our drive eastwards down the Garden Route on the N2 through the beautiful Tsirsikamma National Forest to the St Francis Golf Lodge. The lodge is situated on St Francis Bay. The lodge offer a small number of rooms looking across the course and St Francis Bay, with Port Elizabeth in the far distance, where my journey would shortly finish.

The rooms were clean and comfortable and being on-site makes the whole golfing experience very easy.

Day 9

My last full day started a little grey with some light rain, a first for the trip, but soon cleared up to be another beautiful South African day.

We had buggies to drive the short distance to the clubhouse for our land round of golf. The course itself (Par 73, 6126 yards or Par 76, 6,656 off the Championship Tees) is a classic links course, set amongst the dunes of the bay, with many carries and blind tee shots to reach the fairway. Once (if) you reach the fairways the holes open out but I wouldn’t call many of the fairways other than a little tight. Any inaccuracy on this course will be punished; cries of “new balls please” were heard frequently and not just from me. The sub-10 handicap players in the party were having their own ‘moments’

I think it’s fair to say that I survived this course and although my swing deserted me half way round, I at least finished the course having recorded pars on each of the four Par 3 holes.

Day 10

Time today to say farewell to South Africa and get myself to the airport for a flight to Johannesburg and back via Dubai to Gatwick. Why does it always seem to take longer getting home than on the way out?

I would draw a number of conclusions from my trip:-

  • South Africa is a truly magical destination whether or not you’re a golfer with a superb range of accommodation, great food and well-priced local wines;
  • Definitely stretch your budget to a helicopter flight over Cape Town; it puts the whole place into context.
  • Spend more time in / around Cape Town; there is so much to see and do – three nights as a minimum; but then I wasn’t there on holiday;
  • Tailor the golf courses you play to your handicap – high handicaps will learn but probably not enjoy Pearl Valley and Pinnacle Point; there are others nearby that would suit better;

I’m going to return and I’d be happy to share my experience with you.
