An easy hours’ drive up the N3 inland from Durban will take you to Cotswold Down, an exclusive low density gated residential community which has at its heart, a relatively new down-land course (Par 72 – 6,690 yards off the back tees) designed by Peter Matkovich.
The course has recently played host to the World Amateur championship and the inaugural World Club Pro-Am and was voted the top conditioned course in South Africa. Buggies are compulsory but like much of South Africa, they are not expensive to hire.
No golf visit to Zululand would be complete without a round at Cotswold Downs, which easily combines with a stay at Champagne Sports Resort in the central Drakensberg, followed by a visit to the Anglo-Zulu battlefields made famous by the 1964 film, Zulu starring Michael Caine.
