As I mentioned above, Centre of Portugal has some of the best golf courses in Europe. With thousands of golfers visiting the region every year no wonder Centre of Portugal is one of the most popular destinations with our customers. So let’s dive a little bit into the golf courses the region offers.
Guardian Bom Sucesso
Designed by the prestigious architect Donald Steel this course was included on an exclusive, top-tier list of golfing destinations the European Tour Destination, in April 2016.
Located in an area known for its unique natural beauty, just one hour away from the Lisbon Airport and quite near the charming medieval village of Óbidos, this fantastic championship 18-hole golf course is spread across the Bom Sucesso Resort. On a hilly slope, surrounded by the Óbidos lagoon it has a gorgeous and unique view of the lagoon and the Atlantic Ocean.
The course is located on an area of over 60 hectares, surrounded by breathtaking countryside covered with Mediterranean centuries-old olive trees, together with camellias, azaleas, and magnolias.
A challenging course, even for the most experienced golfer, taking you through a moderately steep slope overlooking the ocean and the lagoon. With different levels of difficulty in both the greens and the bunkers the course has been carefully designed to take in the undulating surface.
The course layout, spanning 6.695m off the back tees, represents a true test for golf players of all levels. The first hole, a generous right-handed dogleg, heading north, sets up a spectacular combination of holes facing the Óbidos Lagoon.
The charismatic hole of the first 9, is the 3rd with a 3 par of 144 metres (off the yellow tees) heading to an island-shaped green with the Óbidos Lagoon on the background.
The second 9 holes overlook the Atlantic Ocean. Six of the holes meander between an intricate ecosystem of lakes interconnected by cascading streams. The highlight of the back nine is the 18th hole, a 490m Par 5 off the yellow tees, with a panoramic view over the clubhouse and the Ocean beyond.
The resort has taken great advantage of the layout of the golf course, as well as the dazzling views. Only 40 minutes away from Lisbon, Royal Óbidos Spa & Golf is truly royalty!
Praia d’El Rey
Praia D’El Rey is undoubtedly one of the most stunning golf courses in Europe and is set amongst extensive pine forests and undulating dunes, with spectacular views over the Atlantic Ocean.
The course is a mixture of seaside views and parkland holes with a par of 73, offering the golfer a unique experience. The 18-hole golf course was designed by the renowned American golf architect Cabell B. Robinson and opened on June 14th 1997.
Deep bunkers, sloping greens and sandy dunes contrast sharply with the lush fairways, making it the complete golfing challenge. Players are required to have a valid golf handicap certificate.
West Cliffs Ocean and Golf Resort
Less than an hour away from Lisbon, the West Cliffs golf course, considered the second-best golf course in Portugal, was designed by the golf architect Cynthia Dye ASGCA, member of the world-famous golf course design atelier Dye Designs Group. This spectacular golf course offers excellent views over the sea from all the holes. This Par 72 course is located in a 200-hectare area by the sea amidst the dunes and the coastline vegetation. The layout is the result of a long-term study on the conditions and characteristics of the soil, in order to preserve the natural beauty and the ecological balance of the place. West Cliffs, the 1st Dye golf course in Portugal and the 4th in Europe, is a true star among the golf courses in the continent. It was awarded the Best New Golf Course in the World in its opening year.
The 5-star resort, beautifully placed between natural sand dunes and coastal vegetation, has pine tree areas and exclusive views over the Atlantic and the Óbidos Lagoon to explore. West Cliffs Resort was carefully projected to embrace several accommodation types, leisure, and wellness possibilities. The resort, the properties, and the golf course were designed in harmony with the surrounding landscape, the environment, and the sustainability of the local ecosystem.
There is a place where majesty meets serenity. Where rolling hills meet idyllic countryside. Where even the air seems cleaner, fresher, and more breathable.
Right there, in the center of this place, sits Dolce Campo Real Lisboa, a resort nestled in the Torres Vedras district in western Portugal.
The golf course was designed by well-known architect Donald Steel. It’s a challenging par-72, 18-hole course that runs through the hills.
Blind shots, steep inclines, and wooded valleys create a series of obstacles that will make playing this course unlike any other you’ve encountered.
This course is a par 72. Has: • 4 par’s 5 • 10 par’s 4 • 4 par’s 5 The maximum handicap allowed is 36,0 EGA, for men and women.
Driving Range, of 275 m, with 27 tee boxes. 2 putting greens. 2 chipping greens.
At the heart of Center of Portugal, 1h30 minutes away from Oporto airport and only 10 minutes away from the noble city of Viseu, surrounded by the magnificent Estrela and Caramulo Mountains, Montebelo Golfe is a mountain golf course with 27 holes. A true challenge for golf players of all levels in a scenery of 200 ha, crossing pine and oaks trees, gorse and heather colouring the landscape in Spring time. The most memorable hole of Montebelo Golf Course, is most probably, hole 12. A long Par 3, running down the hill heading to the green with a bunker on the left side and a lake behind. This is “the soul of the golf course”, due to its challenging characteristics and the unique surrounding landscape.
The second hole with a dogleg on the left side is also remarkable. This hole, which is 482 meters-long (yellow), is actually the longest of the whole 5.924 meters course. Caramulo Mountain is the perfect background. Doglegs are a trademark of this golf course. The ending sequence is truly unforgettable: the last 3 holes offer unique views over valleys, river streams, lakes and well-protected greens.
