Golf in Centre of Portugal

When we think of European golf destinations, Portugal is one of the first places that spring to mind. With many spectacular golf courses and incredible activities for golfers and non-golfers to enjoy, if you have never visited Centre of Portugal you must add it to your golf holiday destination list as soon as possible!

Centre of Portugal as a Golf Destination

Portugal is a prestigious international golf destination. The golf courses of Centre of Portugal are among Europe’s best golf courses: West Cliffs, Praia d’El Rey Golf Course, Guardian Bom Sucesso Golf, Royal Óbidos Spa & Golf Resort, and Montebelo Golf.

Most of these golf courses are close to Óbidos, a romantic village that is a book lover´s dream. Once a medieval fortress surrounded by a 12th-century wall, Óbidos invites you to wander and explore the cheerful medieval ambiance of winding streets and old whitewashed houses where the sunset takes a golden colouring. 

And it is in the Óbidos region where the best beaches on the West Coast are located: Between two surf meccas, Ericeira and Peniche, there is a series of outstanding, sandy beaches with wild cliffs shaping the Atlantic coastline.

Golf Courses in Centre of Portugal

As I mentioned above, Centre of Portugal has some of the best golf courses in Europe. With thousands of golfers visiting the region every year no wonder Centre of Portugal is one of the most popular destinations with our customers. So let’s dive a little bit into the golf courses the region offers.

Guardian Bom Sucesso

Designed by the prestigious architect Donald Steel this course was included on an exclusive, top-tier list of golfing destinations the European Tour Destination, in April 2016.

Located in an area known for its unique natural beauty, just one hour away from the Lisbon Airport and quite near the charming medieval village of Óbidos, this fantastic championship 18-hole golf course is spread across the Bom Sucesso Resort. On a hilly slope, surrounded by the Óbidos lagoon it has a gorgeous and unique view of the lagoon and the Atlantic Ocean.

The course is located on an area of over 60 hectares, surrounded by breathtaking countryside covered with Mediterranean centuries-old olive trees, together with camellias, azaleas, and magnolias.

A challenging course, even for the most experienced golfer, taking you through a moderately steep slope overlooking the ocean and the lagoon. With different levels of difficulty in both the greens and the bunkers the course has been carefully designed to take in the undulating surface.

Royal Óbidos

The course layout, spanning 6.695m off the back tees, represents a true test for golf players of all levels. The first hole, a generous right-handed dogleg, heading north, sets up a spectacular combination of holes facing the Óbidos Lagoon.

The charismatic hole of the first 9, is the 3rd with a 3 par of 144 metres (off the yellow tees) heading to an island-shaped green with the Óbidos Lagoon on the background. 

The second 9 holes overlook the Atlantic Ocean. Six of the holes meander between an intricate ecosystem of lakes interconnected by cascading streams. The highlight of the back nine is the 18th hole, a 490m Par 5 off the yellow tees, with a panoramic view over the clubhouse and the Ocean beyond.

The resort has taken great advantage of the layout of the golf course, as well as the dazzling views. Only 40 minutes away from Lisbon, Royal Óbidos Spa & Golf is truly royalty!

Praia d’El Rey

Praia D’El Rey is undoubtedly one of the most stunning golf courses in Europe and is set amongst extensive pine forests and undulating dunes, with spectacular views over the Atlantic Ocean.

The course is a mixture of seaside views and parkland holes with a par of 73, offering the golfer a unique experience. The 18-hole golf course was designed by the renowned American golf architect Cabell B. Robinson and opened on June 14th 1997. 

Deep bunkers, sloping greens and sandy dunes contrast sharply with the lush fairways, making it the complete golfing challenge. Players are required to have a valid golf handicap certificate.

West Cliffs Ocean and Golf Resort

Less than an hour away from Lisbon, the West Cliffs golf course, considered the second-best golf course in Portugal, was designed by the golf architect Cynthia Dye ASGCA, member of the world-famous golf course design atelier Dye Designs Group. This spectacular golf course offers excellent views over the sea from all the holes. This Par 72 course is located in a 200-hectare area by the sea amidst the dunes and the coastline vegetation. The layout is the result of a long-term study on the conditions and characteristics of the soil, in order to preserve the natural beauty and the ecological balance of the place. West Cliffs, the 1st Dye golf course in Portugal and the 4th in Europe, is a true star among the golf courses in the continent. It was awarded the Best New Golf Course in the World in its opening year. 

The 5-star resort, beautifully placed between natural sand dunes and coastal vegetation, has pine tree areas and exclusive views over the Atlantic and the Óbidos Lagoon to explore. West Cliffs Resort was carefully projected to embrace several accommodation types, leisure, and wellness possibilities. Campo Real

There is a place where majesty meets serenity. Where rolling hills meet idyllic countryside. Where even the air seems cleaner, fresher, and more breathable.

Right there, in the center of this place, sits Dolce Campo Real Lisboa, a resort nestled in the Torres Vedras district in western Portugal.
