The Albatros at Le Golf National

  • The Albatros at Le Golf National is widely considered to be one of the best championship courses in Europe and thoroughly deserves its excellent reviews from pros and amateurs alike. Designed by Hubert Chesneau and Robert Von Hagge, this course has always been destined to host the French Open, and it does not come as a surprise that in 2018 it will bear the honour of hosting the Ryder Cup.

The course consists of fast greens, undulating fairways and links style bunkers; the perfect combination of a traditional links course with a twist of modern target golf. There are few trees on this course, and it seems that the designers had a preference for creating a challenge through the strategic placement of bunkers. The Albatros course requires golfers to utilise every club in their artillery and punishes inconsistent play. This is undoubtedly one of the finest courses in Europe and boasts a fantastic finale on the final 4 holes, which are surrounded by water hazards. The landscape of this course consists of man-made hills and undulations which create a divide between the holes, and excellent viewpoints where spectators can marvel at this beautiful course. Recently, the course
has invested 7 million euros to do renovation work, including the installation of a modern drainage system.

    Full details

As a par-72 and measuring 6854 yards, this course bears the most intense challenge in the Paris region therefore it would be untrue to say that this magnificent course is not worthy to become the Ryder Cup venue in 2018. Once it was announced, the European Golf Design commenced work to renovate aspects of the course. For example, a pond has been constructed in front of the green on the 11th hole, and the waste area between the 4th and 5th holes has been removed.
The true highlights of this course include the risk and reward nature featuring in several holes. There are several driveable par 4s and 5s where the golfer must play safe with punishing hazards lining the green. The player is immediately thrown in the deep end from the very first hole, where they must tackle a blind drive around a corner, then face the long approach over the first lake.

The Albatros course certainly provides an unforgettable round of golf with an intense challenge, making it imperative you play with you’re A-game. With holes of alternating levels of difficulty, featuring streams, spacious bunkers, dog legs and domed greens, this course is one for the bucket list.
