Courses of the Costa del Sol

This week’s blog is on the courses of the Costa del Sol and the great packages that you can get for them. The Costa del Sol is one of the most popular places in the world for a golf break and it isn’t hard to see why. There are dozens of brilliant golf courses along the coast and some fabulous resorts to match them.

First up, we have El Paraiso which is one of the most established courses on the Costa del Sol. The course’s fairways run through a valley from the Mediterranean to the foothills of the Sierra Bermaja Mountains and are lined with a variety of fauna. Its signature hole is the dogleg 6th hole where you must avoid losing your ball to the lake positioned on the right before navigating the two-tiered putting surface. Another great hole is the 8th hole, purely for the views from the downhill fairways. The fairways are always in spectacular condition and unless you are able navigate yourself around the various water hazards on several holes and the fast greens, this course is a stern challenge to golfers of all handicaps.

Cabopino golf course is a short and tight course at just under 5,600 yards to play over hilly terrain between the towns of Marbella and Fuengirola. Although the holes are short, there is a wide variety of different layouts with some spectacular views throughout the course but in order to score well you will have to adapt to the lengths of the holes and navigate through the very narrow fairways. Arguably, the signature hole of this course is the par-four 3rd hole where big-hitters can reach the hole in one stroke from the tee but they will have to make it over the large bunker in front of the green in order to do so! This is a tricky and beautiful course and it is no surprise that it has made our list of the best courses on the Costa del Sol.

Next, we have El Chaparral which is one of the most requested courses on the Costa del Sol and it isn’t hard to see why. Although this is not an especially long course, it is one that requires a lot of accuracy if you are to come out with a good scorecard! Undoubtedly, one of the best holes of this course is the 3rd hole which doglegs to the left but when you make your approach shot you have to make a decision as to whether you are going to try and avoid the water to the left of the green in order to make the green in two shots or whether you will take the safer route. This is an exciting course with dramatic changes in topography throughout including dramatic valleys and barrancas which must be navigated with care!

Torrequebrada is one of the most beautiful courses on the Costa del Sol and boasts a prime location in Benalmadena. The course blends effortlessly into its hilly landscape and that is not the only challenge, there are many strategically placed water and sand hazards as well as the prevailing winds to watch out for whilst you are playing this course! The 18th hole is a special one where you tee off at the top of a hill, to the left of the fairway where you can look out upon the 6th and 18th holes with the clubhouse and mountains beyond them. Your tee shot is over a ravine and accuracy is key as there is a sharp slope on the left and a large bunker on the right and it isn’t much easier to reach the green either! This is a very fun course to play with some excellent and scenic holes including many doglegs to watch out for.

Last, but certainly not least, is Lauro golf course which is situated just 12km from Malaga airport. The course’s fairways are set amongst pine, cork, olive and citrus trees and there are many strategically placed bunkers to navigate your way around as well as some dramatic elevation changes on the later holes. There are some great holes on this course including the 7th hole which is a par-five 90-degree uphill dogleg which requires for you to take two good shots to even get a glimpse at the green and with your first shot being over a tree in the centre of the fairway this can be a little tricky! Another brilliant but tricky hole is the long par-four 16th hole which is an uphill hole and therefore very difficult to reach the green in just two shots. This is a very nice, enjoyable course to play which makes it a perfect addition to your next golf break to the Costa del Sol.

Two of our fabulous hotels, the four-star Hotel MS Amaragua and the four-star MS Aguamarina Suites provide excellent accommodation and facilities perfect for your next golf break if you are looking to stay and play some of these excellent courses.

We hope that you have enjoyed this week’s blog and that when you are thinking about your next golf break you remember some of the great courses and hotels that can be found on the Costa del Sol…

The Best Places for a Golf Holiday in October

This week’s blog is a guide to the best places for you to take a golf break to in October. Although the weather may start to be very cloudy and cold here in the UK by October, there are many places that still have the brilliant sunshine and mild climates which are perfect for golfing.

First up, we have the four-star Hotel Il Picciolo Etna Golf Resort & Spa which is located within Mount Etna Nature Park, Sicily. The hotel’s surroundings are simply stunning and being situated so far above sea level means that you can experience a cool sea breeze all year round – especially perfect for a round of golf! The rooms are all spacious and decorated with a sophisticated style, some of the rooms and suites also have their own terraces with stunning views of the surrounding nature. The hotel’s main restaurant, La Ghandaia, serves delicious Sicilian cuisine created with local produce and after a delicious meal, take time to relax in the lounge bar. The spa here is fantastic and with our packages you can get a free spa circuit with to enjoy on your golf break. The spa features a sauna, hamman area, water paradise area, a whirlpool and more to create the ultimate relaxation area. This is a fabulous hotel and Il Picciolo Golf Club is a spectacular course which winds its way through ancient lava flows. The course is beautifully maintained and has a stunning backdrop of Mount Etna as well as vineyards, oak trees and hazelnut trees.

Up next, we have the four-star Hotel Alicante Golf which boasts a fantastic location as it is set amongst beautiful gardens and just ten minutes’ walk from the beach. The rooms here are all spacious and brightly decorated with all of the amenities that you would expect from a hotel of this standard. Whilst you are here, you can either take the short walk, relax by the large outdoor pool or enjoy the spa and fitness centre. Here, you are near to a large shopping complex and you have so many places to enjoy good food and drink. The hotel’s Augusta Restaurant serves excellent Mediterranean dishes and whilst you are enjoying them you can look out onto the golf course. This hotel has so many fantastic facilities and is in such a great location, especially as it has its own 18-hole golf course on-site. Alicante Golf Resort provides you with a good variety of different holes both in length and difficulty. This course is not overly difficult but isn’t an easy course to score well on without a lot of concentration as you have to navigate your way around many water hazards. This is a beautiful course to play all year round with stunning scenery and a fantastic layout.

The fantastic five-star Precise Resort El Rompido in Spain is another great option for your October golf break and it isn’t hard to see why. The hotel overlooks the two fabulous El Rompido golf courses and you can take a short drive into the little fishing village of El Rompido from the resort. The rooms here are bright and attractive with private balconies where most rooms can enjoy beautiful views out to the Mediterranean Sea. You can spend your time relaxing by the large outdoor pool or enjoying the spa area which includes an indoor pool, Turkish baths and a sauna. We have some great packages for El Rompido which are semi-inclusive where you can enjoy the great buffet breakfast, dinner at the hotel’s restaurant and inclusive drinks between certain hours – perfect for when you want to have a few drinks in the evening after a day on the golf course!

Another great option for your October golf holiday is a holiday to the Albayt Nueva Alcaidesa Apartments on the Costa del Sol. The apartments here are spacious and fully-fitted with everything that you could need, including a fully-fitted kitchen. The apartments are located next to the fantastic Alcaidesa golf courses and whilst staying here you are only a five-minute walk from the sandy beaches of the Costa del Sol. You can enjoy access to the three shared outdoor pools as well as being so close to Gibraltar which is well-worth a visit! The Alcaidesa Health course was designed as a heathland style course with wide fairways. The views from the course are of the Mediterranean Sea, local mountain ranges and the river valley which are all beautiful sights! You will have to concentrate when playing a few of the holes on this course as the course meanders along the river valley which means that you could lose a few balls to the water hazards! Alcaidesa Links course is arguably one of the best Links courses in Spain. You can experience incredible views from this course out to sea and of the Straits of Gibraltar and North Africa! This is a tricky course with rolling hillsides and 2km of beachfront play which means that the wind is frequently in play.

Last, but not least, is the four-star Oliva Nova Beach & Golf Resort in Valencia. This hotel boasts a great location, right on the beach and situated between the resort towns of Oliva and Denia. All of the rooms here are spacious and feature their own private balcony or terrace with views of either the Mediterranean Sea, the resort or the Mongo Mountains. You can spend your days relaxing by the lagoon-style swimming pool, playing the on-site Oliva Nova 18-hole golf course or at the fully-equipped spa and fitness centres. For food, you can enjoy El Olivo’s traditional Valencian dishes or venture into one of the local Spanish towns. This is another great resort to book your next October golf break to…

We hope that you have enjoyed this week’s blogs and that is has prompted your thoughts for where you might be off to to enjoy some golf in the sun this autumn…

Mike’s golf travel tips……

Where did you go for your first golf holiday?
My first experience of golf was on a family holiday to Spain, my Dad was a keen golfer and we played a couple of rounds on what was then a brand new golf course called Capoamor on the Costa Blanca, my score was 110 but I’d been bitten by the golfing bug and never looked back……

What was you most recent golf holiday?
I spent a couple of nights at the fantastic Valle del Este Golf Resort on the Costa de Almeria in May, I hadn’t been to Valle del Este for a number of years and was hugely impressed with the hotel and the quality of the golf course, it’s a tough golf course but the golf packages are exceptional value for money.

Valle del Este, Costa de Almeria

What’s your favourite golf course?
I’ve been lucky enough to play so many great courses over the years it’s very hard to pick one that stands out as the best. In Europe it would be hard to look past the fabulous Monte Rei course on The Algarve. Further afield the courses in Scottsdale, Arizona would rank very highly especially the Raptor & Talon courses at Grayhawk and I can’t possibly forget the amazing 18 holes I played on the Montagu course at Fancourt in South Africa.

GrayHawk Golf Club – Talon Course

What would be your ideal 4-ball?

A tough question……….I’d have to include Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods, probably the two greatest golfers to have played the game………and the 4th would have to be my Dad.

What’s your most memorable round of golf?
It would have to be Open qualifying at Sundridge Park when I was 19, I shot 2 under to come third and secured my place in Final Qualifying……….sadly that’s where the journey ended after two rounds of 79!

What’s your favourite golf destination?
For a longhaul trip I can’t think of a better golf destination than Scottsdale, Arizona, there are over 300 golf courses within an hour of Scottsdale. Add the fabulous bars and restaurants of Old Town Scottsdale into the mix and you have the perfect golf holiday. For a short haul trip The Algarve simply ticks all the boxes, great golf courses, great weather (usually), easy to get to and great value if you look further afield than Vilamoura. Both Tavira & Lagos offer much better value and are often overlooked.

Lagos, The Algarve

What’s the best hotel you’ve ever seen?

I’ve lost count of the number of hotels I’ve visted but two that stick in the mind are Finca Cortesin on the Costa del Sol and The Conrad Algarve in Quinta do Lago.

The Conrad Algarve

What’s your favourite city?

Girona in the Costa Brava – trust me you’ll love it!

Where would you travel to to try somewhere different?
The Costa Brava would have to feature highly on this list, golf courses such as PGA Catalunya, Emporda, Golf de Pals are as good as anything you’ll find anywhere else in Europe and can be played for a fraction of the price of some of the other premium courses in Europe.

PGA Catalunya – Stadium Course

What’s you top travel tip?

Don’t forget your golf clubs!

The Insider’s Guide to the Tivoli Collection

This week’s blog is a guide to the fantastic Tivoli collection. All of these hotels and residences are situated in stunning areas on the Algarve, where you can experience luxury accommodation, beautiful weather and great golf. The great thing about a golf break to the Algarve is that the weather is perfect golfing weather right though until October/November time which means that it definitely isn’t too late for you to start thinking about one of these superb destinations for your autumn golf holiday…

First up, we have two fantastic options for the bustling town of Vilamoura where you can take walks around the marina and enjoy some superb restaurants and bars after a long day of playing golf and relaxing by the pool.

The Residences at Victoria are located in the centre of Victoria Golf course and comprise of luxury apartments with spacious living rooms, flat-screen TVs and a fully-equipped kitchens. However, if you are not looking to self-cater there are plenty of fantastic restaurants within close proximity of the apartments which serve different cuisines and of course, Vilamoura is just under a ten minute drive away. Whilst you are not playing golf, you can relax around one of the indoor or outdoor swimming pools or even visit Marina beach which is just a 12-minute drive away. Whilst you are here, you can enjoy golf at the Oceanico courses. Oceanico Pinhal is one of the older Oceanico courses but that doesn’t mean that it isn’t one of the best. The holes and their fairways blend effortlessly into the rolling landscape, although this is a tough course with tight fairways and a few water hazards it is a great, scenic course perfect for your next golf holiday. The other frequently played Oceanico course is Laguna which is laid out over flat ground which gives it a links-style feel and with plenty of water and sand hazards to navigate your way around this isn’t an easy course either. With luxury apartments, great leisure facilities and even better golf, this resort offers you everything that you could want for your next golf holiday to the Algarve and more.

Next up we have Tivoli Marina Vilamoura, the second property situated in Vilamoura. This stunning five-star hotel offers the same great golfing options as The Residences at Victoria but gives you the opportunity to stay right in the centre of Vilamoura between the Marina and the beach. All of the guestrooms are spacious with floor-to-ceiling windows from which you can experience panoramic views of the hotel’s surroundings. Whilst you are not playing one of the fantastic Oceanico golf courses you can relax by the large outdoor pool or take advantage of the extensive spa facilities. Dining at the hotel is fantastic, there are three restaurants: a Portuguese restaurant, an Italian and a steakhouse, which are all divine. As you are in the centre of Vilamoura, once you have tried the hotel’s restaurants you can venture out and experience some of the great eateries and bars that Vilamoura has to offer you. This is a beautiful hotel which has fully earned its five-star rating…

Next up, we have the Tivoli Marina Portimão which is situated in a prime location, in the middle of the marina in Portimão. This four-star hotel is just three minutes’ walk from the beach and only five from Praia do Rocha. All of the studios and apartments here are decorated with a modern and contemporary theme and are each fitted with a kitchenette. Although being in the centre of Portimão means that you have extensive dining options, the hotel boasts two fantastic restaurants serving international cuisines and giving you the chance to dine and enjoy panoramic views over the sea and the marina simultaneously. Whilst you are here, there are three great golf courses within close proximity of the apartments: Alamos, Salgados and Morgado which each offer a different round of golf. Alamos golf course features a variety of different holes from those with undulating fairways and small greens to those requiring large drives and strategically placed hazards. The greens are very fast and hard here which means that in order to score well you must bring your putting touch! Salgados is fairly flat but features many water and sand hazards for you to navigate your way around which makes it a tricky round of golf as you will often find yourself losing a ball or two in the water if you are not playing your best! This is a very interesting and fun course to enjoy here. Lastly, we have Morgado which is set within tranquil surroundings and can be enjoyed by golfers of all handicaps with its wide fairways and fairly flat terrain (at least one the first nine!). This is a popular course here on the Algarve and it isn’t hard to see why. With all of these great golfing options, fantastic facilities and the chance to stay in the centre of Portimão, it is no surprise that this is a top choice for your next golf break to the Algarve.

Tivoli Lagos is a four-star resort hotel situated in the centre of Lagos and just nine minutes’ walk from the beach. The rooms are spacious and decorated beautifully and are each fitted with a private balcony. Through from March to October, the hotel offers a free shuttle down to its private beach of Meia Praia but you can also stay at the resort and enjoy relaxing around the large outdoor pool. Whilst you are here, you can dine at the traditional Portuguese outdoor grill, the Pateo Velho Restaurant or the international Lacobriga restaurant. This hotel shares the same golfing options as the Tivoli Marina Portimão so you will not be disappointed by the range of golf courses that you will have the opportunity to play on…

Last, but certainly not least, is the Tivoli Carvoeiro which is another fabulous five-star property overlooking the Vale Covo Beach. The rooms are all spacious and decorated with an elegant contemporary design. For relaxation, there is nowhere better than the Tivoli Spa where you can enjoy a range of different treatments, the sauna or the Jacuzzi or you visit the fitness centre for a workout. Whilst you are not on the golf course or taking advantage of the spa facilities, you can relax besides the outdoor pool or take a short walk into the beautiful and picturesque town of Carvoeiro. Although there are plenty of great restaurants in Carvoeiro, you can enjoy eating at one of the three dining options at the hotel including a Portuguese restaurant and an upscale bistro where you can enjoy fresh fish caught the same day! The Tivoli Carvoeiro also gives you the chance to play the Alamos, Salgados and Morgado courses as they are in close proximity of the resort here too. This is a great place for your next golf holiday to the Algarve and it isn’t hard to see why…

We hope that you enjoyed this week’s blog and that you can see all the great options that the Tivoli collection has to offer you both in terms of luxury accommodation and great golfing options. Another great thing about booking to one of these properties (asides from the golf and facilities) is the opportunity to get your hands on an exclusive J. Lindeberg golf shirt which we are giving out to you when you book your next golf break to the Algarve! Most of these properties are also situated in or very near to a great Portuguese town which is perfect for when you want to do some exploring and experience some traditional Portuguese culture…

The Best Unusual Places to Golf

This week’s blog is a guide to some of the most unusual places and courses that you will get to enjoy a round of golf on. In many incidences, it is the case that golf is the main highlight of your holiday and it is often easy to find a fantastic hotel almost anywhere but these are courses which are well worth basing your entire holiday around…

Fist up we have Jardin Tecina which is arguably one of the most special and impressive courses in the Canary Islands. You tee off at the top of a hill and then for the duration of the course you slowly zigzag back down without playing one single uphill shot. With the course measuring a long 6,900 yards from the back tees it is not an easy round of golf. However, with the wide fairways and option of closer tees it is playable by golfers of all standards. The views from every shot are simply stunning with trees, flowers and other tropical plants adding to the stunning panoramic views of the ocean. Although all of the holes are brilliant, there are a few spectacular ones which you definitely won’t forget for a while like the downhill short 4th hole where if you don’t place your ball carefully it may get swallowed up by the ravine which is on your left. The finishing hole for this course is a great one where you will have to hit two well-placed shots in order to score well on this hole and the entrance to the green is framed by two impressive palm trees. This is a beautiful but challenging round of golf and one not to miss out on!

Up next we have the Crete Golf Club which is located in the hills of Hersonnisos and boasts spectacular views from this ideal location. Not only is this course built in a beautiful location but Crete’s year-round mild climate provides excellent golfing conditions. There are a wide variety of holes that will challenge even the golfers with the lowest handicaps here from short par-3s to long par-5s. As you play the course, the fairways wind through rocks and ravines where you can experience stunning views of the mountains and the coast. This is a beautiful course with some very memorable holes and scenery for you to experience – another course definitely not to be missed out on!

The four-star Bogogno Golf Resort is situated in Lake Maggiore where you can experience beautiful surroundings which can be enjoyed even more so when you are playing on the two parkland golf courses situated on the resort – the Bonora and the Del Conte Course. The rooms are all spacious and boast their own private terraces which overlook either one of the golf courses or the pool areas. This is a beautiful resort with some stunning surroundings and great facilities including two tennis courts, an outdoor swimming pool and Jacuzzi as well as a great restaurant in which you can dine outside enjoying the views. Both of the golf courses onsite are regarded as two of the finest courses in Italy and blend effortlessly into their Italian countryside surroundings. The Bonora course is the more challenging of the two courses with its undulating fairways with many strategically placed hazards for you to navigate around.

Minthis Hills Golf Club is just a short drive from the bustling town of Paphos but far enough from the town that its setting is tranquil and relaxing set in the grounds of a twelfth century monastery. The course sits so naturally in its surroundings and offers stunning views away from the hustle and bustle of the towns nearby. There are a wide variety of different holes here and many will leave a lasting impression like the short 12th where you have to navigate the valley on your left and the challenging 17th hole where you will need to be very accurate and strong to reach the green in just two shots. The fairways are far from flat and are lined thickly with fruit trees and grape vines which can make this a challenge, however, with its range of tee options it is playable by golfers of all abilities which makes it a great course for an enjoyable golf break to Cyprus.

Up next we have the five-star Casa de Campo in the Dominican Republic. The hotel rooms here all boast a private balcony or terrace as well as a flat-screen TV, walk-in closet and other luxury furnishings. This is a very special golf resort and whilst staying here you will experience the height of luxury wherever you go within the resort. The resort boasts many facilities including a shooting centre, water sports, tennis courts as well as a private beach and a fantastic spa facility in which you can enjoy a range of different treatments. Whilst you are here you will never be short of somewhere fantastic to dine as there are seven superb restaurants where you can find anything from seafood to Italian to International cuisines. There are three fabulous golf courses on the resort, each of which offers something different from the last and will complete your luxury golfing experience here.

Hotel Antik is a fantastic, new, four-star hotel situated in the marina of Balchik and is just three minutes’ walk from the beach. All of the rooms here are beautifully designed and fully-fitted with all of the amenities that you would expect from a hotel of this rating. Within walking distance, you can enjoy a wide variety of different bars and restaurants but the hotel’s on-site restaurant is superb and offers delicious food. With all of this as well as three signature golf courses within a 15 minutes’ drive away it would be hard to find anywhere better for your next golf break.

Another fantastic property located in Balchik is the four-star Hotel Mistral which overlooks the marina and all of the rooms here have stunning views out across the Black Sea. You are only a three minute walk from the beach here and being so close to the marina means that you are never short of somewhere fantastic to eat or drink. However, if you prefer to stay in, you can enjoy local and international dishes at the open-air restaurant at the hotel where you can enjoy views of the marina whilst you eat. This is a stunning hotel in a perfect location being in the centre of the marina but also only 10km from three superb golf courses.

Last but not least, we have two fantastic and unusual golf courses situated in Bulgaria. Thracian Cliffs is considered to be “Gary Player’s gem” and its setting is breathtaking. Every one of the 18 holes runs alongside the coast of the Black Sea and we can guarantee that you will never play a course anything like this one. Although this course seems daunting, with its many different tee positions, it is possible for golfers of all abilities to play and enjoy a round here – even if your golf is poor, the surroundings are anything but! The 7th and 8th holes are particularly tricky where if you are not entirely accurate you will lose your ball very easily. It is a tough course and one where you will have to take a lot of risks (and many might not pay off!) but it is one of a kind and definitely one that has to be on ever discerning golfer’s must-play list!

BlackSeaRama is another Gary Player special. This course is relatively flat, set upon the cliffs overlooking the Black Sea, although the course is flat, being so high means that the wind will affect your play and make scoring close to your handicap very tricky indeed. There are also a fair few water hazards that come into play, especially in the later holes which add to the trickiness of this course. Its finishing hole is the signature hole here, the 18th is a par-3 over the valley and the views are simply breathtaking. This is another spectacular course that you could easily base your holiday around…

We hope that this blog has inspired your next golf break…it isn’t too late to book for this year!
