Golf de Biarritz Le Phare
The Biarritz Le Phare golf course is a fantastic golf course nestled in the heart of Biarritz, featuring a traditional British layout. As the second oldest mainland course in Europe, this course has been hosting international golf tournaments since it was constructed back in 1888. This course certainly provides a unique experience, one that should not be missed on your next golfing holiday to France.
Due to this course’s rich heritage, it generates a great sense of history able to be appreciated by all players. Not only is this course a great example of the history of golf in France, it also portrays the tradition of the birth of golf in the Biarritz region. Created by the legendary course architects Willie Dunn and Harry Colt, this smaller styled course is not for the faint hearted; don’t be fooled as the sea breeze can cause the ball to swerve in any direction. However as it is conveniently situated between the mountains and the sea, this course offers play throughout the year due to the area’s mild climate. Despite being constructed well over a century ago, this course still maintains its traditional British style.

This par-69 course has become a golfing legend for its views of unrivalled beauty and its challenging greens. Its prestige and reputation is known worldwide, and this has been shown when the Golf de Biarritz Le Phare has been asked to host international competitions on multiple occasions since its creation. Measuring a modest 5,400 metres with a moderately flat terrain, this course has done well for itself to establish such a reputation and is undeniably worthy of its fame. The views on offer here are a deal breaker if you are unsure; you will not find views like these anywhere else.
The flat terrain of this course must not be overlooked; with an impressive 70 bunkers strategically placed across its fast greens, you must be sure to play your A-game. However a benefit of the landscape of this course is that it is easily walkable. Featuring a tree-lined open parkland layout, you will find that all aspect of your game will be challenged here. Yet the layout is somewhat varied, with some holes exuding a classic parkland feel, whilst other holes offering coastal views do not maintain this. This course demands that each player pushes their skillset and handicap to its limit; the Golf de Biarritz le Phare makes an interesting round of golf.
