What is there to do in North East England?
Lindisfarne Island:
Just off the coast of Northumberland, Lindisfarn Island can be accessed at low tide, when a hidden causeway is revealed. Also known as Holy Island due to its history as the origin of Christianity in Northern England. In 635AD when King Oswald of Northumbria invited an Irish Monk, St. Aidan from Scotland, to spread Christianity in his kingdom. Aidan then opened a monastery on the island, becoming a popular destination to visit during a pilgrimage.
Hadrian’s Wall:
Hadrian’s Wall is a beautiful, ancient ruins site, showcasing the impressive remnants of Roman Britain. Built as a fortification method in the 2nd century AD, it stretches across 73 miles from the River Tyne, to the Solway Firth. Protected as one of the Frontiers of the Roman Empire UNESCO World Heritage Site, this is a perfect attraction for history buffs and hikers looking for something to do on their North East England golf holiday.
Durham Cathedral & Castle:
The dramatic Cathedral and Castle located in Durham, are two of the most important historical buildings in England. They form a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and sit on a peninsula overlooking the River Wear. The Cathedral was built in 1093 AD and is a Norman Romanesque style, with a gothic feel to it. The castle, once a fortress, is now home to a college within Durham University, even housing a number of students. The cathedral is free to enter, though the castle has limited access due to university use.
