Things to do

Table Mountain
Take the revolving cable car to the summit for wide, open views over Cape Town, the Atlantic coastline, and the city bowl. There are short, easy walking paths at the top and plenty of photo spots. Go early if the weather is clear.

V&A Waterfront - Cape Town
A lively harbour area with restaurants, shops, and local craft markets. Great for an easy lunch, a relaxed wander, or picking up gifts. It’s also the departure point for many boat trips.

Robben Island
A guided ferry trip to the island where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned. The tour combines historical insight with a look at Cape Town from the water. Pre-booking is recommended.

Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens
Set against the eastern slopes of Table Mountain, these gardens are a peaceful place for a walk. The elevated “Boomslang” walkway gives you views across the treetops and surrounding mountains.

Sunset Cruise
Departing from the V&A Waterfront, these gentle cruises follow the coastline and give you great views of Table Mountain as the light changes. A simple, laid-back way to end the day.

Camps Bay Beach
A spacious, palm-lined beach with cafés and bars opposite the sand. Ideal for a morning walk, a coffee stop, or watching the sunset.

Boulders Beach Penguins
Visit the boardwalks that run alongside a colony of African penguins. It’s easy, accessible, and surprisingly close-up without disturbing the wildlife.

Chapman's Peak Drive
One of the most scenic roads in South Africa. The drive curves around cliffs with dramatic ocean views and plenty of places to pull over for photos.

Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve
A rugged coastal reserve with viewpoints, walking trails, and a good chance of spotting wildlife like baboons or ostriches. The scenery here feels remote and open.

Stellenbosch & Franschhoek Wine Estates
Dozens of estates are within a short drive, each with its own style—historic Cape Dutch buildings, modern tasting rooms, or relaxed farm settings. Most offer tastings, pairings, and casual lunch options.
Franschhoek Wine Tram
An easy hop-on, hop-off tram that links several wine estates. A good option if you want to explore without driving or planning routes.

Vineyard E-Bike Tours
Guided rides on e-bikes through vineyards and quiet backroads. The routes are gentle and the scenery is excellent, making it suitable for most fitness levels.

Arts, Cafés & Boutiques
Stellenbosch and Franschhoek both have walkable town centres with galleries, independent shops, and relaxed cafés—ideal for a low-key afternoon.

Language
English is widely spoken in Cape Town, the Winelands, and at all golf clubs, hotels, and restaurants, so UK travellers will have no difficulty communicating.
Currency
The local currency is the South African Rand (ZAR). Cards are widely accepted, but it’s useful to carry some cash for small purchases and tips.
Weather & Climate
The Cape has a Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers and cooler, wetter winters. The best time to visit is between October and April when conditions are ideal for golf and outdoor activities. Summer temperatures usually range from 24–30°C, while winter days are milder at around 12–18°C.

South Africa is UTC +2 and does not observe daylight savings. The UK is generally two hours behind South Africa, shifting to one hour behind during British Summer Time.

Direct flights from London to Cape Town take around 11–12 hours. Travellers flying from regional UK airports will usually connect through a major hub, with total travel times of around 14–18 hours.

Health & Vaccinations
No specific vaccinations are required for Cape Town or the Winelands, and the region is malaria-free. Tap water is generally safe to drink, and healthcare facilities in major cities are of a high standard.
Safety
Cape Town and the Winelands are popular with visitors and generally straightforward to explore. Normal travel awareness applies: stay in well-known areas, use reputable transport in the evenings, and keep valuables secure.
