At this golf holiday in Portugal...
At first sight, it is reminiscent of a Florida course, flat, wide fairways and plenty of water. However, after the first couple of holes, you find yourself playing through a gorgeous forest of olive trees, oaks pine and chestnut trees with several interesting doglegs. The challenge comes from the numerous fairway bunkers, slightly elevated greens and plenty of water. With the sun on your back it is a course that can be enjoyed for what it is. Montado was designed by the Portuguese Duarte Sottomayor, who began his working life on the golf course with the respected Robert Trent Jones.
The course terrain is relatively flat but there are still some glorious views, including those towards the distant Palmela castle. For those who enjoy walking the course, the lack of elevation makes this very possible. First opened in 1992, the course reached the level of quality it is known for now, and deserves, after extensive remodelling works which began in 2005. These were made under the direction of Portuguese Architect Jorge Santana da Silva, with the entire layout of Montado being redesigned bringing in new tees and greens.
