Solheim Cup – Everything You Need to Know

The Solheim Cup is the ladies equivalent of the Ryder Cup; Team Europe and Team USA face off every two years in a battle for this prestigious trophy. Though just because it is played in a similar format as the Ryder Cup, the Solheim Cup is entirely individual with its own history, drama and standout moments.

Established in 1990, The Solheim Cup began when the creator of PING golf clubs, Karsten Solheim, decided that lady golfers deserved the same spectacle that men get. More than three decades on and it is still one of the most highly regarded competitions in women’s golf.

How is it played?

Just like the Ryder Cup, the Solheim cup is played over three days of match-play battles

  • Foursomes – pairs hitting alternate shots with the same ballu
  • Fourballs – pairs play their own ball with the lowest score counting
  • Singles – head-to-head’s on the final
  • There are 28 points available, so a team needs 14.5 points to win. If they tie 14-14, the current trophy holders get to keep it.
