The Masters 2023 guide

Ever since I was a kid watching the likes of Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods & Seve Ballesteros playing the hallowed turf of Augusta National and trying on The Green Jacket, The Masters has always been a magical and mystical event. This is every golfer’s dream and bucket list trip.

The event holds a special aura around it. As soon as you get within 20 miles of Augusta at Masters time in early April, people’s conversations turn from day-to-day humdrum stuff to the gossip around the tournament. You sense the anticipation and excitement. “Who’s going to win?” “Who’s playing well?” What’s score will make the cut?” Local life revolves around the four-day extravaganza (having said that, the par-3 tournament before the main event is a spectacle in its own right nowadays).

From the moment you walk through the gates and see the perfectly manicured areas on the spectator paths that meander through to the course, you are hit with the feeling of how special the place is, and of the history that surrounds The Masters. Never have I been to a place that is so perfectly looked after, not even a pinecone being out of place.

There is nothing that beats being there in person – you’ll see the iconic parts of the course that you have watched on TV in years gone by. My favourite had to be the par-3 16th, known for the players skimming the ball across the pond during practice days. The noise from the crowd can be heard around the course, whether it’s a great shot or the groans from the fans as the ball ends up in the water.

Columbia is the perfect location to stay during Masters week, located just a short journey from Augusta National Golf Club. This university town gives a fine balance to lively bars and high-quality restaurants to make sure your après-Masters experience is as good as your day at the tournament. My favorite restaurant is Cantina 76 – a lovely, small, family-run Mexican restaurant offering amazing tacos and chilled bottles of Modelo among other delights. The Tin Roof Bar is another must-visit if you are looking for more of a music scene with live bands performing most nights.
