Costa del Sol Golf Holidays: Why Golfers Keep Coming Back

There’s a good reason the Costa del Sol has become one of Europe’s best-known golf destinations. With more than 70 courses in the region and a mild climate that makes golf possible throughout much of the year, there’s plenty to bring golfers back time and again.

Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport is well connected to the UK, and many of the region’s golf resorts and courses are within easy reach. Away from the fairways, you’ll find beaches, traditional Andalusian towns, restaurants and lively resorts, making it easy to combine a golf break with time exploring the Costa del Sol.

One of the biggest attractions of a Costa del Sol golf holiday is the sheer choice of courses. There are layouts to suit different abilities and budgets, from resort courses where you can stay close to the first tee to some of Spain’s best-known championship venues.

La Cala Golf Resort is a good example of what the region does particularly well, with three 18-hole courses set among the hills of Mijas. Elsewhere, courses such as Finca Cortesin, Torrequebrada, Chaparral and Atalaya each offer a different test, so it’s easy to build a golf holiday around several courses rather than playing the same one every day.

There are also golf academies and practice facilities across the region for anyone looking to work on their game. Many clubs have restaurants, terraces and well-equipped clubhouses too, giving you somewhere to relax after your round.

A golf holiday on the Costa del Sol doesn’t have to be all about time on the course. The Mediterranean coastline has plenty of beaches and seafront promenades, while towns and villages further inland offer a more traditional side of Andalucía.

Málaga is well worth making time for, with its historic centre, museums, restaurants and waterfront. Along the coast, places such as Marbella, Estepona and Benalmádena give you plenty of choice for eating out and spending an evening away from the golf resort.

For shopping and nightlife, Puerto Banús is one of the best-known spots on the coast, with designer shops, restaurants, bars and a busy marina. If you prefer something quieter, there are plenty of smaller towns and beachside restaurants where you can have dinner overlooking the Mediterranean.

The Costa del Sol’s golfing credentials were underlined in 2023 when Finca Cortesin hosted the Solheim Cup. Europe retained the trophy after a dramatic 14-14 draw with the United States, and it was the first time the event had been staged in Spain.
