Penina - Championship Golf Course
Penina Championship golf course is a well-known and established 18 hole course. It has quite the reputation for being one of the most challenging courses Portugal has to offer. For this reason it has hosted events such as the Portuguese Open on several occasions. The course was built in 1966, and designed by Sir Henry Cotton, a 3 time winner of The Open Championship. It was the first ever golf course built in the Algarve and has inspired many other courses to be built in the Algarve region.

The course’s historic background isn’t the only key feature it has to offer. It’s stunning landscape boasts scenic and towering tree lines that sweep throughout the course, along with strategically placed slopes, water hazards and bunkers. Which is one reason the course can catch out even some of the best golfers. The gently sloping landscape and relatively short yardage of 6373 yards from the yellow tees makes this course an enjoyable one to walk, ready to take in all the breath-taking scenery.
The course has an atypical par of 73, boasting only one par 5 on the front nine, and a further four on the back nine. General consensus is that this unusual layout is refreshing to those who play the course.
Along with its rich history and accolades, Penina possesses the wonderful par 3 13th hole which has been ranked as one of the top 500 holes in the world. This hole really lives up to its ranking, with a lake engulfing the entire right side of the hole. There are also two tricky bunkers to navigate on the left side of the green, leaving little room for error. A mightily impressive hole, for an extraordinary golf course.
