Golf Breaks & Holidays in Biarritz

Biarritz is one of the most characterful destinations for a French golf holiday.

Set on the Atlantic coast, close to the Spanish border, it brings together Basque culture, sandy beaches, excellent restaurants and a great choice of golf within easy reach.

Grand old buildings sit alongside surf shops, market halls and busy pavement cafés, giving the town a lively coastal feel without losing its sense of history.

Compared with Bordeaux golf holidays, Biarritz feels more coastal and energetic. Bordeaux is about wine country, châteaux and vineyard scenery, while Biarritz brings sea air, beach walks, surf culture, seafood restaurants and evenings out in town.

It also feels different from Northern France, which is often more focused on short breaks, easy access and classic parkland golf. Biarritz has a stronger holiday feel, with a Basque identity that comes through in the food, architecture and coastal setting.

Golf Courses

The golf around Biarritz is wonderfully varied, which is a big part of the appeal. Rather than playing the same style of course all week, golfers can mix historic city golf, Basque countryside layouts, pine forest fairways and more testing Landes coast rounds.

Golf de Biarritz Le Phare is the historic local course, set within the city and around 10 minutes from Radisson Blu Hotel Biarritz. Dating back to 1888, it is compact, walkable and full of old-club charm, with a par-69 layout where accuracy matters more than power.

Makila Golf Club offers a more relaxed Basque countryside round. Set in Bassussarry, close to Bayonne and Biarritz, this 18-hole par-72 course has wider fairways, mature oak trees and views towards the Basque mountains.

Golf de Moliets is best treated as a full golf day out on the Landes coast. The 27-hole complex includes the main 18-hole Forêt-Océan course and the shorter 9-hole Airial course, with pine forest, sandy soil and Atlantic coastal holes giving it a very different feel from the courses closer to Biarritz.

Golf de Seignosse brings the strongest test. Set north of Biarritz on the Landes coast, between the Atlantic Ocean and the Landes forest, this Robert von Hagge design is known for winding fairways, mature trees, hidden water hazards and a memorable par-6 finishing hole.

Where to Stay

Radisson Blu Hotel Biarritz is a strong base for a Biarritz golf holiday. Guests can stay close to the beach and town centre, then travel out to a different course each day.

This works particularly well for golfers who like the freedom of a town-based holiday rather than being tied to one golf resort. After a round, you can return to Biarritz for coastal walks, drinks, dinner and the buzz of the town.

Beyond the Fairways

Biarritz is a great choice for golfers who want plenty to enjoy away from the course. The beaches are a major part of the destination, whether for surfing, walking or simply sitting with a drink and watching the Atlantic.

The town also has a strong food scene, with seafood restaurants, Basque flavours, lively bars, cafés and local markets. Days off the course can include coastal walks, shopping, a visit to the market halls, or a short trip towards Bayonne or the Spanish border.

This is one of the reasons Biarritz works so well for couples and mixed groups. The golf is strong, but the holiday does not have to revolve around golf every minute of the day.

When to Visit

Spring through autumn is the best time for Biarritz golf holidays. Late spring and early autumn are especially appealing, with comfortable temperatures for golf and a lively but slightly calmer feel than the peak summer weeks.

July and August are popular for the beach atmosphere, but the town can be busy, so early tee times and restaurant bookings are sensible. The Atlantic weather can be changeable, which is part of the region’s character, so layers are useful even in the warmer months.
