Top Golf Courses in Lagos for Your Portugal Golf Holiday

Palmares Golf Course:

Palmares Golf is located 5 minutes from the wonderful town of Lagos in the western Algarve, and is rightly considered as one of the most picturesque and finest golf resorts in Europe. Designed by Robert Trent Jr, this 27-hole course is made up of three distinctive loops: the Alvor, Lagos and Praia Courses. With each loop providing its own challenges, playing here will be an enjoyable experience for golfers of all abilities.

Espiche Golf Course:

The Espiche Golf Lagos is a challenging 18-hole golf course that reflects the very best of the Western Algarve landscape. Featuring beautiful scenery, creating a tranquil ambiance with a variety of streams, lakes, and local fauna scattered across the course, as well as the Monchique Mountain backdrop.

Boavista Golf Course:

At this course you’ll find umbrella pines, blossoming almond, fig, palm, and olive trees line the rolling fairways, weaving their way between water hazards and shrewdly placed bunkers. Very natural in its design and with stunning scenery, this course can be a tough challenge for high-handicappers with some long carries.

Discover answers to common questions about golfing holidays in Lagos

Lagos is a brilliant mix of culture, beaches, and quality golf. It’s more chilled and scenic than the central Algarve, with a historic old town, stunning cliffs, great restaurants, and quick access to some of the region’s most impressive courses.

    The big three are:

    • Palmares Golf – Ocean views, links-style holes, and 27 superbly designed holes.

    • Espiche Golf – Eco-friendly layout with a wild, natural feel.

    • Boavista Golf – Undulating fairways and great facilities, super close to town.

Many golfers also add rounds at Penina Championship (25–30 minutes away).

    Absolutely!

    • Boavista is great for mixed groups.

    • Espiche rewards accuracy and suits mid-to-lower handicaps.

    • Palmares delivers variety across its three loops, from links-style challenges to generous resort-style fairways.

Car hire is entirely optional. Lagos is walkable, and transfers cover most needs. If you want to explore beaches, Sagres, or the west coast, a hire car is handy.

March–June and September–November are peak. Winter is mild and very playable; summer is hot but manageable with early tee times.

Some may request them (especially Palmares), but enforcement varies. As long as you’re a confident player, you should be fine.

Lagos is fantastic for non-golfers, with stunning beaches like Dona Ana, Camilo, and Porto de Mós, boat trips to the famous sea caves, and a charming old town full of shops, cafés, and history. Those who enjoy adventure can try surfing on the west coast or take a sunset trip toward Sagres, while anyone after a slower pace can relax at beach bars, enjoy coastal walks, or dine at excellent seafood restaurants. There’s plenty to keep non-golfers entertained while the golfers are out on the course.

Very much so. The town has family-friendly hotels, beautiful beaches, water parks nearby, and gentle courses for beginner-friendly rounds. It’s a great pick for mixed-age groups.

July–August are lively with holidaymakers, but it’s still less hectic than central Algarve resorts. Spring and autumn feel relaxed, with ideal weather for golf.

Yes. Many hotels and apartments are within walking distance of the marina and old town.

Lagos offers a calmer, more scenic experience than the busier Algarve resorts. While it has fewer courses in the immediate area, there’s a great selection just a short drive away, making it perfect for golfers who prefer quality courses without the big-resort atmosphere.

    Golf Trips to Lagos

Steeped in maritime heritage, Lagos played a key role during the ‘Age of Discoveries’, and its historic centre remains surrounded by 16th-century walls. While staying here, you can explore cobbled streets, historic churches, and landmarks like the old slave market museum and Forte da Ponta da Bandeira, all set against a backdrop of traditional Portuguese charm.

The town is equally famous for its beautiful coastlines, featuring dramatic cliffs and sea caves. Some of the Algarve’s most iconic beaches include Praia Dona Ana and Praia do Camilo. Just south of the town, Ponta da Piedade offers panoramic views and access to sea grotto tours and kayaking adventures.
