Royal Ostend Golf Club

The Royal Ostend Golf Course is a demanding course, especially when the strong winds come into the play. Founded in 1903 and designed by Seymour Dunn, the course stretches out over sand dunes as the course seems to capture the most picturesque element of the Belgian coastline. However, despite being built originally back in the early 20th century, the course was renovated in 1990 by Martin Hawtree to ensure the course would meet the demands of modern golf, whilst still maintaining the course’s original character. In 2006, five greens were also replaced.

The 8th hole is considered to be the best, at a length of 145 yards. It is one of six par three holes. This hole is played from a suspended tee in the sand hills to a punchbowl green with three protective bunkers. The wind on the coast greatens this challenge therefore the stroke index on the card must be disregarded.

The consistent coastal wind which flows through the fairways provides a real test to one's skill and concentration. As soon as the Channel wind intensifies, the golf course swiftly becomes a challenge. Hole four with a par 4 requires a particularly accurate tee for the shot down the fairway. Wind from the coast also imposes a challenge on the 9th hole due to the water hazard placed on the right of the green.

The clubhouse ends a great day out, serving up the local beer, for which Belgium is famous for. Visitors are invited to have a drink in the English Bar on the terrace, where they can enjoy the sun. The clubhouse restaurant also serves its visitors a variety of high quality cuisine, including authentic Belgium cuisine. The clubhouse features basic facilities such a showers and dressing rooms.

The Royal Ostend Golf Club clubhouse also boasts a unique bridge room which certainly sets itself aside from other golf courses in this region. Visitors are welcome to participate in a leisurely bridge competition to finish off a pleasant day.
